Since this will be available on both the PC and 360 I figured this was a more appropriate section of the forum to put this bit of news in.

Here's a link to the trailer on Joystiq.
http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/mass-effect-special-edition-trailer-relives-games-better-moment/

Here's the first hand impression by Joystiq, I really hope all of it's true and the bugs are fixed and the game plays smoother. I'm really excited for it to say the least.

Impressions: Mass Effect 2 'suicide mission'

Is Commander Shepard alive or dead? Mass Effect 2 project director Casey Hudson raised the big question again today at E3 to begin a behind-closed-doors demo of the dark sequel from BioWare. The short answer is no, of course he's not dead. Players will take control of Shepard (either fresh or imported from save data from the first game) in the next chapter of the three-part space opera, which Hudson forewarned would explore "the most brutal parts" of the universe.

Apparently, humans have been reported missing all across the galaxy and, as players, we are working with a "shadowy" pro-human group to get to the bottom of this body-snatching business. This is generally considered a suicide mission (more on that after the break), but nonetheless, we do proceed, recruiting a squad of "the most dangerous, powerful individuals" (oh c'mon, they're aliens) from the known universe to help us.

We caught a tease of one such individual, Thane, described by Hudson as "the most deadly assassin in the galaxy." The mission to encounter Thane showed off some of the new combat enhancements developed for Mass Effect 2, which appear to improve the real-time playability of battle. Hudson described these tweaks, including location damage (i.e., exploding heads, blown-off limbs), as creating "a new precision-shooter feel," but we were still seeing evidence of the clunky experience that marred the original. Animations were stiff and inconsistent, and the AI, both friendly and enemy, continues to manifest itself as robotic (sure, some of these characters are robots, but we were under the impression that they were a bit more intelligent.)

Shepard does appear more capable with a firearm in this sequel, as the demo was played almost entirely in run-and-gun fashion, showing off a seemingly improved cover system and better weapon handling. BioWare is including nine new weapons classes and another new heavy weapons system, featuring a missile launcher, which our demoer used to pelt a wave of enemies. Of course, the pause-and-strategize alternative is still available, too, using a slightly revamped Power Wheel, which can preload "real-time" attacks and help steer squad mates.

Mass Effect 2 is still more RPG than shooter and really shines when the game enters into the dialogue-driven cinematic storytelling choosing. BioWare has added a new twitch element, called "Interrupt," which can be used to force action into conversation when the appropriate blinking icon (the Left Trigger, for example) appears on-screen and is quickly pressed. Frustrated by a stalling interrogation? "I've got nothing more to say to you," offered up an NPC, crossing his arms in dismissal. No problem. Just "interrupt" with a quick shove ... out the window. "How 'bout goodbye," Shepard absurdly one-lined as the man plunged to his death. Wait, there was more: "So, when do we read him his rights?" followed up a squad mate.

Shepard was (played) more apathetic than cold-hearted throughout the demo, coolly watching as Thane crept into the background of a conversation set and offed an important-sounding Asari and her bodyguards. "I was curious to see how far you'd go to find me," Thane gurgled out to Shepard when he was finished. "Well, here I am." We're not entirely sure what was supposed to happen next, as BioWare jumped ahead, skipping past "the entire new level of interactivity" in the planetary scouting mode, too ("We'll explain more about this later in the year," Hudson promised). Let's just assume, then, Thane joined up -- before things went really wrong ...

Yup, this was the point in the demo that Hudson prefaced with: "What we're about to show you is actually a spoiler that is from something that we will never show again outside the game." So, consider yourself warned before you read on for the the long answer to: Is Commander Shepard alive or dead?

Our next glimpse into the game opened in the midst of chaos. Shepard's ship, the Normandy, was hemorrhaging flames and metal. Hudson explained that it had been "severely damaged by a new force in the galaxy." Shepard is played as the good captain, evacuating as many of his crew as possible and presumably sacrificing his own opportunities to hop inside the various escape pods along the path. One too many missed opportunities and Shepard is seen cannon-balled out of the Normandy's exploding side, careening helplessly into space, gasping as the last of his air tanks fizzle out. And then, silence.

This "sets the stage for the very real possibility that Commander Shepard can die in the end of Mass Effect 2," Hudson cryptically posed. "You can actually keep playing after the credits roll; you can go finish adventures; download new stories; and carry your character forward into Mass Effect 3 ... but only if you survive." It's a suicide mission, remember? So save often.

Now I'm just going to have to decide whether I want it for the 360 or the PC since I played through the game on both setups, good on the 360, evil on the PC.

This one looks more interesting than its predecessor, which may cause a rental of the first. I'm not big on most of the BioWare titles... Jade Empire, perhaps, being the only exception. Still, the game looks gorgeous, and with the extra 'spotions, you know its 360-approved!

More news about the game:

Mass Effect 2 won't allow second playthrough by character for sake of continuity
Unlike the first Mass Effect, the sequel will not allow players to restart the campaign with all the skills Shepard gained throughout his (um, her!) second adventure. Mass Effect 2 Lead Designer Preston Watamaniuk notes on the BioWare forums that the team is working hard to "offer a smooth progression into ME3 from ME2." The reasoning is that they "have to have reasonable knowledge" of where a character could end up at the end of the game.

Of course, Mass Effect 2 players can feel free to create a new character and start over. So, it appears that if you're looking to start Mass Effect 3 with a jacked-up Shepard, make sure to explore every little nook and cranny of the galaxy before going into the sequel's final mission.

This is kind of lame, I played through the last one three times. Although I guess I can see why they aren't allowing a second run through of the game.

BioWare: EA owns Mass Effect IP (Translation: It could still come to PS3) [update]
We've been doing a lot of wondering about BioWare lately: wondering what the company is going to do with the Wii; wondering what our saves from the first Mass Effect will do to the sequel. But most of all, we've been wondering if Mass Effect 2 will be making its way to the PlayStation 3, like its dragon-infused brother, Dragon Age: Origins. So we asked BioWare's Matt Atwood directly about the possibility of the game coming to PS3, to which he responded, "We've only announced 360 and PC. At this point we're really focused on those platforms."

We understand, Matt, but what about the intellectual property itself? Does EA own the Mass Effect name? "Yes. EA owns the rights to Mass Effect." And so, as far as exclusivity between Mass Effect and Microsoft, that doesn't exist? "That's right," he told us.

Update: Matt Atwood at BioWare just contacted us to clarify his statements from earlier today regarding Mass Effect 2's exclusivity to Xbox 360 and PC. He says, "It [exclusivity] actually does exist for Mass Effect 2. And beyond that, we haven't announced any plans."[/quote]

When I first read this I was wondering why on Earth they would even want to bring the game to the PS3 now. Would people even buy it considering they don't have a Commander Shepard from a previous Mass Effect save to use? It's EA so I don't think you can rule anything out though because they still want several truck loads of money.

See the (amazing) Mass Effect 2 gameplay we saw at E3
More than a month after we got our hands on the E3 2009 build of Mass Effect 2, BioWare has finally released footage to back up what we saw and played. It's a sort of "developer's cut:" The video features good looks at character interaction, combat and exploration -- all in-game -- along with commentary on these systems by the game's makers.

Just be forewarned that there's discussion of the series' plot and one potential ending for Mass Effect 2, in the event you don't actually want those things spoiled for you. Of course, you could always turn the sound off and just enjoy the amazing-looking visuals.

Yes I'm impressed and no I can't wait for the game to come out.

I figured I was just going to get my character's specs and equipment for the squeal, which is actually unclear at this point. I guess I need to be careful what I do in my final play through of the game before the sequel comes out.

Mass Effect save file transfers 'hundreds' of decisions to sequel
When BioWare told us to hold on to our save files from Mass Effect for use in the highly anticipated sequel, our minds drew simple conclusions. We figured it would determine our character's appearance, for example. However, a recent PC World interview with Mass Effect 2 lead producer Casey Hudson reveals the save file's true purpose: it keeps track of your every decision during the first game, which in turn will affect the plot of the second.

Not just the big decisions, either -- Hudson says that the player made "hundreds" of choices in Mass Effect that have an impact on the sequel. For instance, Commander Shepard superfan Conrad Verner made a brief appearance in the first game. Players could respond to his fandom in a number of ways (ignoring him, threatening him, supporting him) -- however you decided to treat Conrad will ultimately affect his subplot in the second game. Us? We sent him to hostile alien territories to go snipe hunting. We're worried he'll have a bone to pick with us.

This all sounds very cool, but we're still curious whether or not our characters' stats, abilities and equipment will carry over from the first game. Screw the story elements -- we're attached to raw, unbridled power.

Mass Effect 2 stardated January 26, 2010

Captain's Log: Stardate: October 16, 2009. Electronic Arts has announced that Mass Effect 2, the next installment in BioWare's epic space opera, will jump to North American and European retail on January 26 and 29, 2010, respectively. The North American GameStop pre-order bonus will include:

* Terminus Armor -- "Increasing run speed and personal shields, and augmenting weapons with an additional magazine of reserve ammo."
* The M-90 Blackstorm Heavy Weapon -- "Generates a high-powered localized gravity well, accelerating particles to near-infinite mass."

Those who preorder from other retailers will receive the Inferno Armor, which gives Shephard "an increase in run speed and augmented damage from combat powers." And thus begins the Q1 2010 release bonanza ...

So tomorrow is the day (at least here in the US)! Who's planning on getting it?

I'm getting it on Thurs, I love ME and I've just started playing the original again. I can't wait!

Ya I'm working through the original right now, my hopes was to have it finished by tomorrow so I could import my save. I'm so close to level 60 too. I forgot how much fun the game was too and just how good the story was.

i played through and enjoyed the first one. The combat/shooting in the first one wasn't the strong point, the graphics were so-so but the overall feel/play was good. I will be picking up Mass Effect 2 on friday. :)

Apparently everything they screwed up on the first one they made better in the second one. I'm heading to GameStop after work to get it and hopefully it;s unlocked on Steam when I get home...yes I bought it twice. My character on the PC was different then my character on the 360.

I have to wait till Thursday, guess I'll have to make do with saving the galaxy from Saren for the billionth time.

hahaha just to make a comment, i remember there was some Fuss over the "Love Making" scene in the news. When i got to it, i was like are you serious? What a joke. I was trying to get good with the Human Female character (don't remember her name it's been a loooong time) but i guess the story is geared towards the human/alien relationship...:dopey:

I already pre-ordered this and will be picking it up in about 3-4 hours. Trying very hard to avoid any spoilers. So I wont be back in this thread until tomorrow.

I remember now why EA sucks. In order to play the PC version's DLC you need to login with an EA account, which I have. It hangs up when I'm trying to so because EA's servers a nuked.

I installed the PC version and logged in around 8 EST and it worked fine for me.

Game rocks. Fun and full of nice eye candy.

Spent six hours straight on it so far. Loving every minute of it.

Quick review.

I played ME2 for about 2-3 hours last night and it is MUCH better than the first one.

They improved this in pretty much every single way. Controls are better, speed running is better, game is less clunky, graphics are better. They also fixed every complaint I had from the first game. The controls and weapon inventory upgrades were really confusing with the first game and in this one they dummed it right down and made it much more user friendy. Same with the leveling system. It is much more simplified in Mass Effect 2. There is also an instant map navigation system that wasn’t in the first one. Just by clicking in the analog sticks it shows an arrow indicating your next objective. Which was one of my major complaints of the first game. I would always get lost and have no idea where to go in the first game. That is fixed. They also added hot keys which is one of my new favorite features. Instead of being forced to pull up the wheel for each battle you can hot key them to the buttons of your choice. Also no more long elevators.

They improved and fixed EVERYTHING with this game. Even if you never played the first one you could truly enjoy ME2. It is very very story driven and requires talking to people quite a bit but you drive the story. You can also probe planets for resources which is very nice for extra money. So no more worthless empty planets. That was one of my major complaints with the first game. I spent at least an hour just going planet to planet checking them out. Navigating the universe is also much more user friendly because some of your main missions are listed right on the outside of the planet before you enter that planet. I had a hard time putting the game down last night. The first hour pretty is basically a tutuorial for people new to the game. But after that it picks up and gets much better. After that its very hard to put down.

nice little review, i will have to stay out of this thread till friday (payday). I'm already almost at my budget, if i keep reading the good/improved reviews i may have to put the game on my credit card, but i will be good and hold out. :)👍

I put some a decent amount of time into Mass Effect 2 last night. Now I am up to 8 hours total gameplay.

**Slight spoilers**
I spent quite a bit of time exploring the citadel. Bought some fish, my hamster, and some model ships. I also bought all the materials that my crew members requested like the ingredients for the chef, the Brandy for the doctor and the parts for the engineers. I was hoping we could view the models closer but I guess not. Just a small detail that could have been improved. Thats ok not a big deal. Starting to get a good solid feel for this game now and truly enjoying it. Again I cant say enough about how much better this game is than ME1.

I forgot about what happened last night....

I am going for 100% Paragon....Good character..

So I am at the Citadel getting interviewed by the same young lady from ME1. After some words back and forth and some happiness I see something pop up in the lower right of the screen. Hmm whats that. Ohh hit the RT asap. So I hit RT.........and little did I know that is the Renegade reaction. Next thing I see is a cinema of me punching her face and knocking her to the floor. I yelled "OOOps!!!" lmao Then +5 Renegade rolled up onto the screen. Well so much for 100% Paragon. :scared: lol

You can still get 100% paragon, unless they changed around the system in ME2.

SSV Normandy Crash Site download: I thought it was a little disappointing. Not actively bad, just a missed opportunity.

I realize it's free and only 62 MB worth of material, but I would have happy paid a couple of bucks for something more fleshed out.

SPOILERS - Highlight to read.

For example, instead of being all alone, it would have been nice to have Joker and Dr. Chakwas with you --they are survivors of the original Normandy as well and it stands to reason they would also want to see the old ship. Some dialog would have been nice.

I thought the datapad from Pressley was a good addition --there should have been more artifacts along those lines.

Again I cant say enough about how much better this game is than ME1.

I've to disagree here. I think it's lost something actually.

I hate scanning planets. In order to thoroughly scan a planet you'll need to use all 30 of your probes. Which means leaving the system your in, burning money to get more fuel and probes. Scaning takes a while too while being boring.

Fixing the mako would be a lot better because they would just need to give the make forward thrusters and populate the planets better. Making the mako upgradeable would help too.

Elevators with news clips hinting at side quests or interaction between ai squad mates >>>>>>>>>>>> loading screens.

No more over mircomanagement of items is good, but nothing to manage is just as bad. There's only three levels of bread and butter weapons. The ones you start with, one you find and character spesific weapons you devlope. and how do you always have enough of the new weapon for everybody?

I hate not having custom ammo types for everyone. Yes, Jacob and grunt will let everyone use flame ammo is nice, but only if you level up in the direction.

Leveling up is over simplifed. plus you cant always upgrade skills, which there are less of, each time you level up. why does it not tell you leveled up until you finish a mission?

Legion = epic team mate addition. I'm surprised tali isn't causing more problems though.

I don't want to fly the Normandy. Let me pick where to go and let me know what it'll cost in fuel. Me controlling the normandy = pointless IMO.

Customizing armor is cool, by why is there only one type outside of the perorder suit? Why can't I change my team mates armor?

Don't get me wrong, I'm still enjoying and I'm about to leave for the suicide mission in good faith I'll live. Everyone s loyal but Jack (had to choose between Miranda and Jack, sorry btch, the hottie comes first :P. Zaeeds a joke so I dont care what happens to him. I also did all of the ship upgrades.

I miss having access to almost every mission from the start. For instance, you didnt always have to get your squad mates any in exact order and once released into space, you can do most missions in any order you want.

More thoughts later.

Hey, guys, i need to have some opinions. If you had to choose 1, which one would you choose: Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Efect 2 or Borderlands?
Also do you have to play Mass Effect 1 to know tthe story?

I hated the first Assassin's Creed and Boarderlands is only fun if you have a real live person willing to co-op with you. If you are into action RPG's Mass Effect is pretty much the game to get because the amount of stuff you can do is awesome and the story is pretty epic.

You don't have to have played the first Mass Effect to know the story, but it really does help out to have played the first one so you know what's going on. You can pick the first one up used for under $20.

depends - do you want action with some story or action with story and rpg elements? borderlands isnt very fun single player.

Also do you have to play Mass Effect 1 to know tthe story?

no, but it helps.

Hmm I guess the other thread was deleted.

I played this all weekend. I am using the Adept. Currently I am level 17 and have 38 hours into the game. I spent 3-4 hours straight yesterday just probing planets for resources. My gf and I were taking turns with the 2nd disk. She would play the 2nd disk to continue the story and I would put the 1st disk in and just collect resources. Then we would swap. This way we could both keep playing at the same time. Such a great game. Much better than the first.

I like storylines but mostly look for which one is the funnest in terms of things to do.
