I tried uploading my 100x100 Flapjack from before, but now he's so small. What size can avatar's be now, so I can remake him?

The maximum size is the same for every member now, and I really doubt Premium avatars will get a size increase as Jordan has stated there haven't been plans to do it.

Also, when uploading jpeg images as avatars, the file size drops considerably. As does the image quality. Before the update they would retain their size and almost png-level quality. So long as it was under the 25KB limit. I'm guessing that's because they aren't converted to gifs when uploaded here anymore?

EDIT: You can't even upload an avatar via online URL anymore? Huh.

And since the size limit is now 200x200 because profile pics and avatars are now tied in with each other, it would help greatly it the file size limit went up in conjunction with it. 5-10KB more would be perfect.

I'm wondering, now that the user profile pic and the avatar pic are shared won't that mean that one or the other will end up blurry (either sized up or down)? Because one is 120x120 and the other is 192x192.

I've been playing around with a bunch of different avatars today. I just think it would be a lot easier to forget about making your profile pic as big as possible. It'll either make your avatar file size too large to use, or reduce the image quality. Finding a PNG small enough is much harder as well, and most of the JPG images look awful once the site downscales the file size.

However, I find that manually converting those JPGs to GIFs (like this site used to do automatically) helps maintain some level of quality. My current avatar was over 30KB and instead of rejecting the image, it downscaled it to 21KB (for my profile pic at least). This didn't work with PNG or JPG files, and I'm not sure if it'll work with moving GIFs.

I'm still not too happy about avvys and profile pics being connected in this way though. It makes it difficult to get the right balance of size and quality when the limit is only 25KB. That - and the spoiler text not working - are the only real problems I have.

^ Yeah as the avatar and profile pics are connected one or the other is always going to look terrible. It would be better to allow separate uploads of 120x120 and 196x196 for each.

EDIT - I have just noticed, even if you upload a 120x120 avatar, when on any normal thread page it artefacts ever so slightly yet it looks fine in the user profile. Is there any way to stop this?

I haven't found a way to fix that. It was the first problem I came across when testing a JPG image.

The file size stays the same for your profile pic when you upload it (yours is 24KB), so it looks fine. But for whatever reason it drops considerably for your avatar (below 6KB).

^ Ahhh, so that's what's happening, its a real shame that its so heavily compressing the avatars (6KB!!!) seeing as its meant to represent you.

I have noticed it's saving everything as a .jpg which loses any transparency people add.

Actually, the few PNGs I've tried so far stayed that way and kept their transparency. Just uploading one from my computer works, so long as the file is small enough.

No need to upload transparent PNGs to image hosting sites before copying the URL here either. Plus that option is gone now anyway.

Can someone telly me how a 13.0KB image is bigger than 20KB? The site thinks that my new Flapjack is way bigger than it actually is
