'Halo' cars should look special. This does not.

Don't know whether there's just too many super/hyper cars being produced right now, but this just gets lost in the rabble. There's nothing special looking or stand out about it.

The interior is a bit different though, i'll give them that. Probably the best i've seen in modern times for this kind of car. Just wish McLaren would do something else with the steering wheel airbag/boss. It always looked like an afterthought, but now they seem to carry it on from car to car like some sort of 'quirky' feature. It just looks dumb. Although it is refreshingly free of manettinos.

I have been refraining from saying it, but the front especially the LED DRL is too similar to the Tesla Model S...

The design of this car is lacking latin passion, a bit too clinical

I am sure it is a great car, but the soul doesn't yearn for it...

A great car has to be balanced in all of it exudes, and this one has to resort on some fake video special effects too much like Transformers or Fast and Furious...
None of the things I like. Too much fake.
If the car can't speak for itself, I am going to keep my 2 millions in the bank...

That said, while nobody's really going to be quoted as intending to keep a new, sealed W1 as an investment, even with careful vetting and promising to drive it, you can bet one of the buyers will do almost exactly this.

McLaren F1 #060 was still wrapped in plastic in 2017. There are P1s for sale now with three digits on the odo. Australian app-selling billionaire Adrian Portelli had his McLaren Senna craned into his 57th floor penthouse in Melbourne, I assume it will never drive again.

It's unfortunate that the only people who can afford these ultimate driving machines are art collectors and investors, so that's most of what a McLaren does: sit in a room, appreciating value for a richer, greater fool.
 
It's interesting one would really even consider such a route. This a highly limited production car that's already spoken for. You'll be able to own one, put some miles on it, & then find a broker/auction house that will be able to net you a profit (or at least, your investment back) in the first 2 years as production still finishes. All you have to do is just make sure you don't do some wild spec that turns everyone off. McLaren's also a safe brand to resell b/c they're more than happy to keep taking money from whoever is willing to fork it over.

I'd wager that you could even send it back to the factory to right any aesthetic wrongs and still not be out of pocket.
 
Personally, I kinda like the overall design of the car. Yeah, it's not super flashy for the most part, but I'd say it's still a good-looking, smooth design. I especially like how it still has a similar side profile to the F1 and P1, which is a cool touch. Also, the rear wing is pretty damn neato.

Now, what would be really, really cool is if it turns out that McLaren is using the W1 (or a potential W1 GTR down the line) as a basis for a new LMDh or LM Hypercar. There's always been talk that McLaren is at least somewhat interested in the category, so perhaps they may use the W1 as their base a la the Aston Martin Valkyrie. It would also be a much more direct connection to the F1 and its history.

At a glance, it doesn't seem like the shape would be competitive in LMDh/LMH - the greenhouse is very wide compared to the cars built to those regulations.

The closest shape they've got is the Solus which isn't too far off but is still compromised for style and likely isn't designed for hot-swapping body parts and other mechanicals. Something like the Valkyrie is not based on an existing road chassis so they were able to go whole-hog. LMH and GTP cars are basically formula monocoques with pontoon fender shrouds but until we get a comparo between the Valkyrie and Solus we won't know if that car and design actually has the potential to perform at an endurance level.
 
It sure doesn't look bad, far away from it, but looks, as others already said, too generic to me, same like withe the F80, even though the W1 has some more clear design references to its brand. But in comparison to their predecessors, they are missing a lot, there's not the pure design like the P1 had, it was a really bold design which was different to anything else I've seen before, same with the LaFerrari. Sure its a different time now and design can't be invented new every time they bring a new car, but this is still a disappointing to me for brands with such a heritage.

I have to say the design has grown on me over time, I didn‘t really like it at first. It‘s still the classic McLaren design language, just a bit more angular and futuristic.

I‘m sure the performance will be incredible as it was in the P1 and Senna.

They didn't put any effort into making it pretty which is a shame. Everything about the general shape and proportions is the same as every other V8 Mclaren since the 12C, with a more ridiculous bodykit slapped on. I won't call it more attractive than the Senna, it's merely less dog-faced ugly than the Senna. The P1 was at least sensual and unique, a lot like the F1 was in its day. I was honestly expecting something more like a Solus than this Mansory-looking abomination. Even the exhaust tips look simultaneously uninspiring and not purposeful.

I disagee. The front has more purpose than just beauty, but how they still managed to make the car still good looking (in my opinion) is incredible. Once you get to know why the worst looking parts are there, you will get it. Just think about the f80 or the luce when you think THIS is ugly.

Great video, thanks for sharing.

It‘s nice to see that the W1 still primarily relies on the ICE and only uses the electric motor as an aid. That exhaust note is absolutely menacing!

Shows you that McLaren is still one of the best supercar/hypercar manufacturers.
