wowww. im soo addicted to this game...after 2 days, i've reached act 3... but im so confused..as i haven't played MGS 1,2 or 3...can anyone explain what a patriot is? and what is AI?
I suggest the GameTrailers MGS retrospective videos:
http://www.gametrailers.com/retrospective.php#Metal Gear
They are each about 20 minutes long, and the final one will kind of spoil teh plot for MGS4 if you haven't beaten it yet.

And/or

Get the Metal Gear Solid Database off teh PlayStation Store.

Or, you could do it my way and buy eth Essentials Collection, assuming you have a PS2 compatible system.

Alright, thanks for the info

I've played the crap out of all the games (since MGS1 anyway) and i'm still not 100% sure WTF a patriot is :dunce:

Are you skipping cutscenes? Or do you mean that you know what The Patriots are, but aren't really sure of their nature/origin? Cause, yeah that can be confusing, but I suspect that is on purpose.

The Patriots are... La Li Lu Le Lo.
Problem solved. No more questions now.

Hell, I'm just trying to wrap my head around the concept of the Gekko... I mean a metal head on bio legs? Also, wtf is up with the cow sounds and shaking like a dog? :odd:

When they shake like a dog, they're getting rid of waste, IIRC, and the 'cow sounds' is more of a psychological trick. Play it on Boss Extreme, and somehow, you are scared of cow sounds...crazy.

The Gekkos have artificial muscle legs because they move better than mechanical legs. They also make cow or bull sounds to create fear in psychological warfare. When they shake out that green stuff, I think they're just taking ****s.

I like to call them Metal Gear Cows.

Nobody thinks of these when hearing the Gekkos?

Yeah i get the broad basics of the story and a very general understanding of what the patriots do, but the whole thing just seems stupidly complex and confusing. I've played through each of the games 5+ times and i generally watch the cut scenes every time.
I haven't seen anyone else posting about this so i may get jumped on but...
I just wish the storyline (in the MGS world generally, not just MGS4) was a little more user friendly. I'm not against complicated movies/game plots etc but the MGS games are just crazy, it seems like every major cut scene is another 180deg twist. I wish there was a simple explanation as to why he is getting into these situations instead of these cluster**** plots that start off reasonably simple then just descend into stupidity. I stay with for them for a while, then give up trying and just watch the cutscenes to see the pretty pictures :sly:
I keep buying them because the action/sneaking seems more realistic than GTA games etc (though i love the crap out of them also for different reasons). I think it would be 100 times better if the story had half as much realism as the rest of the game.

EDIT: The Gekkos reminded me of the big alien machine things in the remake of The War of the Worlds. Didn't they make big loud cow noises (or was it honking noises?) and expell waste is a nearly identical way before bounding off into the distance?

If you get the MGS Database (did Australia get it with the EU?) and go into the timeline section it actually goes disturbingly far back to say just how big this whole thing is.

So, it is easy to see how it is so convoluted that it hurts.

have to say i love this game, just wish there was more actual player play lol. going through it for the 2nd time now. Love the feeling of going back to shadow moses. Brought back sooooo many memories, and seeing all the old faces.

Some new PASSWORDS, but are useless to me. I already have the SOCOM Mk.23 pistol and Mosin-Nagant rifle.

mekakorkkk unlocks the SOCOM Mk.23 pistol.
mnsoymsyhn unlocks the Mosin-Nagant rifle.

Wow, talk about useless!

Well, the Mk.23 is awesome because it's the first firearm Solid Snake finds in Metal Gear Solid. The Mosin-Nagant is the first rifle to use the 7.62mm round and is the same rifle The End uses in Metal Gear Solid 3.

Not totally awesome weapons, but very nostalgic for old players.

Well, I didn't mean anything against the weapons...
It's just that they're not hard to get without having to resort to codes.

Yep. The passwords were too little to late for most of we early MGS4 players, but a lot of others might benefit.

Well the mosin-nagant was my weapon of choice in MGS3 once i robbed it from the End, so maybe i'll use that password when i get MGS this week.

Fox Emblem - Beat the game on normal or higher w/ no deaths, 5 or less alerts, no kills, no recovery items, no stealth suit, no bandanna items, in under 6 hours.

Oh... So much for getting that DE w/ a scope... :dunce:

That list says you should get it. But, it is wrong in other places, too. Most EMBLEM lists come from this source. That's probably why you didn't get it.

The FROG emblem is earned by doing 100 forward rolls, not side rolling. Also, the SCARAB emblem is earned by laying on the floor and then rolling sideways, not, "diving rolls" like it reads.

BTW, I have 23 of the 40 needed emblems. How many do the rest of you have? How did you get them?

Is deskyhstyl the code to get it? If so, I have to have finished the game right?

I don't think it matter because well lets face it... I'm not 1337 enough apparently. I've had a few deaths..., a few more than 5 alerts..., killed a few people, no recovery items (... whatever that is), no stealth suit (... I dunno, I guess), no bandanna items (think i tried using that), and finally have gone a "little" over the "in under 6 hours" mark... xD

Good question... don't have a clue. xD

Try it! Start up the game, and go straight to the EXTRAS section and enter the code. Then, load any game save and it'll be there.

When I go to EXTRAS it takes me online. I guess I do have to finish the game... thanks though.

If you're currently playing it, yes, you must wait until you finish and save. Then, exit to title and click on EXTRAS. Enter the code and all your game saves will have the weapon from then on no matter where in the game you last saved.

I have a question to ask:

Is Metal Gear Solid 4 the game of the year?

I was going through Metacritic scores and MGS4 is currently at 95 out of 100. The only game that has a higher rating is Grand Theft Auto 4 with a 98 out of 100. Can MGS4 come out on top this year?
