I decided I'll go for this one. It will be a tough test of my itchy trigger finger. Guess I'll start zapping some people with Mach II now :)

You can kill the B&B bosses by the way, in beast form at least. I have no idea whether you have to knock out the beauty form as well or not. You can also defeat any boss which requires you do deplete there health rather then psyche such as

Mantis when you use the doll and Vamp when you syringe him

After almost a year avoiding anything MGS4 related, finally got this and a PS3 last week and completed it. Amazing game - the direction and cinematography in some of the scenes was visual honey. Going to do a quick-ish normal run again to stock up on certain items (and save before any major cutscenes - the omission of a theatre mode in a game like this is simply unacceptable IMHO) before I do a Big Boss run. Fun times. :)

Stock up on tranq .22 and the various .22 emotion rounds, all the different emotion smoke grenades to. The amount of ammo you can carry is vastly reduced on the hardest setting, and you can't buy tranq rounds from Drebin either. You can still buy everything else, but just stock up on I think 50 is the max but don't quote me on it, of the .22 rounds. If you wanna save the DP, just buy it all in Act 5. Save your standard tranq rounds as much as you can, and just generally avoid contact is possible. Save very regularly and if things go bad you can just exit to title and reload, some sections of the game almost make this neccessary such as the chase in Act 3, where you'll need auto-aim and perfect timing because you still can't kill anyone! As far as I know anyway.

Wait a minute... you mean I don't have to kill the beauties?? I have been forced to feel like an cruel monster every time I killed them, each one three times now.. and now your saying there's another way? Holy crap.

Emotion grenades? I know about emotion rounds but they're not working. When I shoot, the enemy just gets an exclamation mark and then nothing. :yuck:

You can't what now? And I've been spreading my tranq shots like there is no tomorrow... :ouch:

You can still buy everything else
LIES. you can't get chaff grenades ;)

When they are in Beast form, you can use lethal weapons all you want. But when they're in Beauty form, you must use non-lethal weapons. Stun grenades work best.

Aim for their head.

He said you can't purchase tranq rounds from Drebin. You must find them while playing.

LIES. you can't get get chaff grenades ;)
True. But you can find enough to last you for the entire game by level 2.

You can defeat them through non lethal means, such as V ring shotgun ammo, stun grenades, tranq rounds etc. etc. Although this changes nothing in how the game and cutscenes play out, but you do get their facecamo for it. Also, you can defeat most of them in beast form with non lethal means to, however this is pretty difficult on harder settings but does get you a nice reward if you defeat the beast forms in this way if you collect the item which appears after defeating the B&B member and the FROGs in Act 1. Collect all 5 to get the reward.

Oh and don't worry, I didn't feel good about nailing the beauties but after walking away from them for a while during my first beauty encounter, she ran at me and it freaked me out so I filled her face with hot lead.

Also yes, you can never buy Chaff grenades, forgot about that one.

True. But you can find enough to last you for the entire game by level 2.

You never truly need them, they just save alot of time in Act 4 particularly, I abused them during this act on my Big Boss Emblem run.

I say chaff grenades is one of the few things I badly need. It will be really tough on act 5 trying to get that door open with geckos that just keep coming and no chaff grenades.

Gekkos aren't human, so they don't count as kills, so blow them the 🤬 up. Same goes for the little sentry bots and flying units.

I tried crawling all the way to the door and it worked like a charm

It depends what difficulty you're on really, if you're on Big Boss Extreme then well done, I got through the entire first section of act 5 up to that door in about 3 minutes by crawling and nailing them with the Mk.2 on my BBE (big boss emblem) run and rail gunning the gekkos once I cleared the area.

I do enjoy MGS so much, even though I've played through it so many times, I still happily sit there plugging away by using various styles (I particularly enjoy sniping through, or playing it more like you'd play Socom).

Yup, on extreme. It was much easier than shooting my way through on hard. I only took out a couple with the silencer since they were coincidetially in my way. Because they didn't know my location, the enemies were scattered across the map. When I was a the door noone even spotted me. It didn't require brilliant skills at all, I just crawled all the way maintaining as high camoflague as possible.

I opted for a speedier approach, I took the centre path and knocked all 4 guys who drop down with a headshot each before they could move with the Mk.2 Tranq, then went forward and to the left a bit further on, took out 2 more gaurds, took out the guards ahead on the left side before the door (and snipers) before railgunning the Gekko which drops down as soon as it landed. My total completion time was about 3 hours something I believe.

Ok for the first time last night I played MGS4, I gave it about an hour and just can't get into it, that hour consisted of probably 40 minutes of cutscenes (why do I need to watch someone cook eggs?) and then some gameplay that was basic and boring. I set it on the second difficulty setting and the AI are blind.

I bought the original MGS after all the rave about, played it from start to finish and didn't like it, I borrowed MGS4 because all the rave and have no interest playing any more :indiff:

The Metal Gear Solid series has always been love it or hate it. The reasons why people hate it and the reasons why people love it are typically the same thing.

Jay V, without having played MGS2 and MGS3 I can tell you that much of your opening cutscene will not make any sense in MGS4. Oh, and you could have skipped them. But for fans of the series the characterization and story it builds is a signature of the series.

Sorry you didn't like it, but I can tell you that you are not alone.

As much as I like the MG series, I have to agree, all the excessive story crap & the way too many video scenes is BS, bring on more game play. I'm so glad online play is SO much better.

Yeah I don't like skipping cut scenes as you often miss the plot and fine details, then you are just randomly playing when the game starts but considering I missed MGS2 & 3 it was probably like that anyway.
I will give it some more time because I understand this is no cheap throw-out game and I appreciate a quality title (even if I don't get into it all that much ).

Just for my own curiosity, whats with the cracking two eggs and frying them near the start, it doesn't go anywhere relevant from what I can tell? Is it something I missed in previous titles or some sort of eccentric randomness?

Oh and Solid Snake is good at hanging on to those smokes!

The eggs themselves are just some odd eccentric thing, but the names of the chickens are a intriguing and a bit funny. The truly important thing to note is who the girl cooking the eggs is, as it connects MGS2 to MGS4.

I haven't played MGs4 in a while so I can't remember all the details from that cut scene though.

👍 You can't lose a high-tech security laser detection device like that.

The eggs 'Sunny side up' symbolize the title of the chapters.

The eggs thing is supposed to represent some kinda of fortune telling, depending how well the egg cracks is supposed to signify the events to come. Or at least if I remember rightly and I'm not just making things up

Yep, that too. But, I never found that to be an accurate statement or confirmed by anyone at Konami or Kojima Productions.

Close. It's Sunny's "Sunny Side Up" fortune telling. If the cooked eggs come out right, something good will happen.

Thanks for the explainations, little deeper than I expected :)

Any advice on great tactics against Liquid on extreme level in the final fight in round two? First round is easy. Second round he won't be cornered anymore. I'm almost too pissed off now to finish this at the very last hurdle. It's almost as if I have to know what he is to do before he does it because I find I have to be lightning fast with correct counter/block/dodge if I wanna see a sign from him first like starting to bend backwards for heavy punch.

Dodge around furiously until you get a chance to lunge in and land some hits. I mean seriously just keep dodging around even when he's not near you, in circles if neccessary until he makes an attack and leaves himself open, just be aware of when he has finish attacking, he might be continuing a combo when you put yourself in harms way.

I can't remember anyone mentioning these.
