OK... I am getting closer to deciding to buy and play MGS4

In the meantime, I'll be warming up with some Paintinator: Paint of the Patriots...

I really do hope you like it. It is a treat of a game, but unfortunately it is a love it or hate it kind of game.

And don't forget to get the MGS4 Database from the PS Store to help you make sense of the story. All information that may be spoilerish to MGS4 is locked until it detects a completed MGS4 game save.

I can verify that this will not ruin any of the story. But it is crazy fun.

"SUNLIGHT!" Kind of hard to stay hidden when Snake stands out and screams that out, huh?

Yeah, it's silly, like I said, but fun. The story behind the gun is it's from another popular video game character who uses the pistol, powered by photons from our Sun. To be honest, I didn't pay good attention to the story. Either an Anime show or a video game popular in Japan.

I did some sleuthing, aparently it comes from one of the Boktai games also made by Kojima, it is a pretty fun weapon, can't wait to give Vamp a pasting with it.

This game should be played the first time on hard by almost everyone. That is the first level where one is forced to have some respect for the enemy soldiers. You can't stand around in the open and reload like one can on normal level. Did ayone actually play very easy? How did you find that?

Very Easy level is fun because of the TONS of extra ammo and items you can collect. You can go 'ape-poopie' crazy and shoot all the ammo you want and never worry about running out.

True, you can pretty much play in your sleep, but you'd be making your own fun by shooting the place up. :)

Me and a friend went through on very easy to mess around but I've only ever done full playthroughs on normal, hard and very hard (well there respective names aren't the same on MGS but the hardest 3). It's one shot kill on very easy with basically everyone weapon against basically every enemy accept a full on boss. I agree though, the harder the difficulty the more intense it gets.

I played on Very Easy, but I have no clue how I should respect enemy soldiers, because I did my best to never let them see me.

Never once was I in a position to be out in the open and fighting. Heck, even in boss fights I tried to stay in cover.

The only thing I can say about enemies on very easy is that they appear to be wearing ear plugs.

I'm replaying this game for a second time. I'm about half-way though the second chapter. My God the game is so much more fun now that I know what I'm doing! I spent FAR too much time face down in the dirt trying to avoid fights (like a snake I guess, but still...) as I kept getting shot to pieces as bedlam ensued when i engaged.

This time i have the balance better, and when it goes well I can string together some nice passages of play. I can even find time to appreciate the scenery and some of the touches and flourishes that are in the game. Great game!

I just can't motivate myself to sneaking and peaking unless I think I'll get shot to pieces unless I do. Lone man fighting should be more type selfdefence and shooting yourself out of a tight situation, not walking tall in the middle of the street like Robocop. In MGS 2 I remember fearing the alert squad coming out with their sheild and shooting. I ran for cover if they were on their way or were shooting like mad and praying that I'd pull through if I couldn't find cover. That was more like it. I think they made it easy enough having all these checkpoints in MGS 4. It is a great game nevertheless.

Ps. Well, I can understand that one can extract fun with spraying the walls with bullets as well. For a laugh kinda thing.

I find on extreme it's very much a more realistic situation then most other games out there, you can put up a good firefight but you can't just run and gun through. It's still possible to go through without being to stealthy, that is when allies are around, if you use cover and other obstacles well, but once Snake is alone staying out of sight is key and when you are spotted it is very much self defence rather then offense.

The octocamo becomes much less overpowering in the sneaking department on harder settings to, on Normal and below it makes you practically invisible if you have 80% or more which is just silly when you look at Snake yourself and it's so blatant that he's there, but on Extreme you actually have to hide properly unless you're a fair distance from the enemy.

So give an example. On hard with the mask on, at 99% cover the enemy can be two meters away without spotting you. Are you saying that is different on extreme? If so, how much different?

Enemies will likely spot you if they're close pretty much.

Take the first section of act 1, just after the APC appears and drops off some PMC troopers who will kill a couple of rebels. A little further on from there there's a longish path leading towards the next area (which contains a statue you can pose with) which goes through a built up area and some enemies patrol that path. I was just off to one side crawling at the minimum speed with octocamo on and around 75-85% and an enemy spotted me from the central path through one of the gaps that snake can crawl through from about 20 metres away. Although not an instant alert he hadn't identified me, but he came round and I had to take him out with the stun knife just as he turned the corner so he didn't get enough time to get the alert off. 95-99% can still keep you pretty hidden, but if they get close they generally find you if they look in your direction.

It's been a while since I played so I'm not sure exactly what kind of distance they need to be at to spot you on 95-99%, but I'm sure it can still happen.

When you are hidden/laying down or in cover, a good indication that you will be noticed is the "aura" type Ring that surrounds you. If it turns red it usually raises/or lifts up in the direction or side they are nearing you and when close enough you will be discovered. Thats what i noticed. AWESOME game. I started playing through on big-boss hard i think it was "while ago" and it is MUCH easier to be spoted, and sound off alerts by noises etc. I loved the game. It's one of the best i have played on ps3 so far. The cut-scenes are ridiculously long and the Ending took forever, but it was well planned out and executed if you ask me for a Metal Gear game:)👍

You're right about the ring, a particularly useful tool if you've ran out of battery for your Solid Eye. The ring also appears when crouching and moving at low speed, so you can often react quicker if you see an enemies position moving towards you so you can dart back or raise your weapon ready to headshot that fool.

I completed the game on hard mode and thought "Alright! What cool stuff will I get now!?".

I got nothing.

W H A T T H E H E L L ???

so I started it up on extreme instead addicted as I am. That'll show the developers not to give me stuff when I complete their game on hard. Wait a minute, no it won't... :)

the next area (which contains a statue you can pose with)
That area is one of the hardest in the game to get through unspotted I find. I couldn't do it. Soldiers are everywhere, one floor up as lookouts and stuff. So on extreme mode I grew tired and tried to run and gun my way through and surprisingly that worked. I placed myself in cover behind the boxes piled next to the wall close to the opening to the shed (close to where one meets Otacon) and feared that they would be coming from both directions now (a ****** place to be in therefore). But I found they mostly came from the front. Like one guy came up behind me, the rest of the soldiers further back stayed put. That made the situation manageble and it is from there just a short sprint to the cutscene.

Indeed it is a very difficult section to sneak on Extreme, especially as facecamo is unavailable at this point (even if you're going from an old save). It's doable, but it's all about surveying the ENTIRE area and infact from the statue I crawled and rolled my way right to the ruins which a guard patrols by (whilst he is on the main path). Sounds impossible right? there's a guard in the right door, one to the left and a guy ON the path itself, but time it right and you can get yourself past each door, right into the shadows by the guard on the path.

Most of the good bonuses don't come from completing the game on a hard setting, they come from the games many emblems for completing the game in various manners. If you wish I can find an entire emblem list with it's rewards and criteria.

I had no idea that is what it hinged on. I did stop thinking "what is this for anyway?" when I saw the eagle classification I got the first and second time and then thought "nah probably just nothing". Sure, hit me with it. What am I missing out on?

That area is the only reason I haven't tried a Big Boss Emblem run yet, it just puts me off, but after I get my items back (I think I've got everything except the Big Boss facecamo, used the password to get the Patriot...) it should be ok, except for the... other bit later on.

The only useful thing unlocked via emblems for me was the Corpse camo (which is surprisingly difficult to unlock...), since if you get spotted you can just play dead if someone comes over to see what's going on, including Gekkos. The Solar Gun is basically the only other useful weapon that you have to unlock rather than collect, in my opinion anyway. I haven't played this in months, and this is making me want to give it a go again but I have to stop procrastinating!

Wow, I had no clue it did that. I got it and it looks cool but got worse camo use than the auto camo. But now I think I might use it. :)

The problem is if an alert is set off, like big boss camo sends off an initial alert then it fades as the guards run in fear of your dead face, I don't know about corpse I don't have it. I did the Big Boss Emblem with the Mk.2 using emotion rounds at times where useful and the normal when vital, and just abused Facecamo and octocamo where I could. No real special tricks, just avoiding combat is the way really.

No real spoilers inside, so here they are. Getting all 40 gives you some rewards, I don't know what but it's nothing significant. Getting the Big Boss Emblem gets you alot of others at the same time, well worth it.

Awsome, thanks Dragonostic.

You're welcome Alltodxx :P

Seriously though, concentrate on the Big Boss Emblem and you can get alot of nice stuff all in 1 go. There's some videos around youtube of people playing an entire play through for it HOWEVER, time spent in the pause menu and so on also adds to your play time, luckily you don't need to change weapon and camo often.

hey guys, i need a little help. what would you buy - MGS4 or GT5 (i know that isn't released), but i own GT5P? they are two the greatest game series, GT are for racing, and MGS are for shooting.
MGS>CoD
GT>NFS

Buy MGS5 now and GT5 when it comes out which is likely to be christmas or later.

Exactly what I'd say, it's probably a long long time until GT5 comes out, you can easily get enough money for GT5 in that time frame.

Dragonistic: did you get that from a FAQ, or compile that yourself? if you DID compile it, FAQ it. info like that is what guys like me hunt for. I'd also like to find ones for the older MGS's I gotta know where I stand to see if I suck or not :P
