Intense crash at Suzuka in a 458 Challenge race:

@~30 sounds in first video

The driver and track official were hurt pretty bad but definitely made it. Ferrari makes one hell of a car D:

That looks very much like he got help from the black Ferrari. In the second video you can see them side by side coming into view right before the yellow Ferrari crashes. It looked like the black Ferrari might have given the yellow one a little nudge.

This is certainly a what the fudge moment, drivers in WTCC were so concerned with getting a slipstream that none of them made it to the start line, 12 grid penalties have been given out for it:

I don't get it, what is the big deal about them all being slow?

Cos if you are in the slipstream of the car(s) ahead you can gain a lot of time at that track, Chilton didn't want to give anyone else the slipstream for another lap so he slowed down hoping people would pass him and then he could get the slipstream. But then no one passed, and in the end they drove really slowly and at the last second went for it but still missed out on doing another lap. Was a bit silly to say the least. Cos it is dangerous to just suddenly slow down on a track, it was a train of cars and if someone locked up or didn't see them it could of ended up in a huge crash.

OK, I knew about drafting, but I didn't understand the context of the clip, thanks for explaining.

Its also resulted in one of the craziest list of penalties I've seen:

Hugo Valente, 5 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Tom Chilton, 12 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Yvan Muller, 12 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Tiago Monteiro, 12 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Gabriele Tarquini, 24 place grid drop and 6000 EUR fine
Tom Coronel, 15 place grid drop and 4000 EUR fine
Norbert Michelisz, 12 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Rob Huff, 10 place grid drop and 1000 EUR fine
Pepe Oriola, 16 place grid drop and 6000 EUR fine
Alex MacDowall, 8 place grid drop and 3000 EUR fine
Stefano D’Aste, 5 place grid drop and 1000 EUR fine
Darryl O’Young, 5 place grid drop and 1000 EUR fine

Plus the Honda's have been put to the back for illegal rear wings. Should make for an interesting race 1 tomorrow! The FIA made quite the profit today!

It was during Qualifying, so they all wanted the slipstream going into their final flying lap. But because they were all going so slow, waiting for someone to pull away and begin the run, no one made it to the line in time to actually start their flying lap.

Very disappointing, they deserve the punishments.

Why does that warrant a punishment though, stupidity isn't a crime, last time I checked anyway.

Because thems the rules:

It is not permitted to drive any car unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner deemed potentially dangerous to other drivers at any time.

International Sporting Code Appendix L, Chapter 4, Article 2e

Worst to first, through the rain. Warning, horrible music plays loudly over the video in the beginning:

Good old Melbourne weather, And Formula Vee, Makes me wish I still had mine, Incredibly hard to set up fast, but incredibly easy to drive fast,

In the words of Jeremy Clarkson, that's not gone well.

That's what happens when you put a bunch of aggressive drivers lacking experience on a tight street track.

Isn't that kinda the point of GP2, to build their racing knowledge?

Not really, it's the second highest single seater formula, just below F1. They should have built most of their racing knowledge long before they got to GP2 but in the last few seasons it's seemingly been filled with dangerous rookies who just don't seem to know what they're doing and are far too aggressive.

Like Formula 1 where more drivers seem to be buying their way into a seat?

How often do you see crashes like that in F1 in the dry? It's not just a one off either, the last two or three seasons of GP2 have been like this. This current crop of drivers are just not up to the standards of previous years.

Well luckily in Formula 1 they still have a lot of talent from the past few years when they actually looked at the talent of a driver rather than how much money he brought to the teams.

But let's take Maldonado and/or Perez for example. Last year neither finished the race and Grosjeans incident at turn 1 could have caused the exact same problem but the more experienced (should we say talented) drivers meant that him, and him only lost the race at the first turn.

Well that's what I'm saying, the field overall is very poor, even at the front. You're always going to have the odd rookie but at the very front and overall you expect the experience and talent to sort themselves out. GP2 for the past few seasons just seems to be filled with average drivers. I mean from the last few years have you seen a Hamilton, a Rosberg or even a Grosjean? I haven't.

That looks like the 405 at all hours.

Fixed that for you.

It was the problem back in the days of European F2, the same with F3000...the best talent skipped the rung below F1 and jumped right into deep end from International/national F3. For a while, GP2 offered that rare opportunity whereby great talent actually battled each other, and made the cut in F1, with great results. So, if anything...this is a bit of a "typical" dry spell.

Much of the grid is comprised of 19-21 year olds that aren't quite mature enough at this point, and some guys that aren't going to get a chance at F1 (Palmer, Cecotto) but can fill the seats by helping out with sponsorship dough.
