Now I know where Will Ferrell got the inspiration for his character in Talladega Nights.

For those of you who don't know, the 24 hours of LeMons is an amateur American endurance racing series. The name is a parody of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and has some very interesting rules to say the least. From its Wikipedia page:

Penalties

LeMons officials have an inventive penalty and punishment system where penalties for some infractions are meted out by a device called The Wheel of Misfortune. Various devices may be put onto the car in order to affect car performance; one device used is metal silhouettes of various farm animals welded to the roof by the "Arc Angel" to reduce aerodynamic efficiency. Also, any car that flips in the process of the race is slapped with the "Why Am I Upside-Down?" penalty: not only is that team disqualified for the current race, but the driver who flipped the car is barred from all other races for the rest of the season. Likewise, Drivers and Teams might also be forced to undertake physical acts in order to satisfy punishment conditions, such as the Marcel Marceau Memorial "Mime Your Crime" penalty, where a driver must put on white face paint and a beret and mime what they did wrong. In addition, penalties are often tailored to address current events or figures where the race is run. Examples of this include the "Max Mosley S&M Penalty", the "Sheriff Joe Arpaio Penalty" in Arizona (where drivers must don pink underwear, sit in a hot tent and eat stale bologna sandwiches, all punishments the Maricopa County Sheriff has given at his prisons), and the "Mark Sanford 'Cry For Me, Argentina' Memorial Penalty" at a race in South Carolina, in which a driver must write a lengthy love letter to his Argentine mistress on his car, à la the former governor of that state. All penalties are designed to waste the time of a lousy driver, while less aggressive and better drivers continue to race.

I'm just going off topic here I'm afraid, but do you have to pay for your own fuel in the LeMons 24hr, or is it included in the price? How do you get the fuel, and how much would it normally cost for the weekend?

It has 9 from my countings, same as this:
My internet is acting up and this isn't loading for me, but IIRC I'm pretty sure it trumps 9.

EDIT: Now it's loaded, perhaps not...

I would assume you have to pay for it yourself as per the nature of the race. It didn't say fuel was covered in entry costs in the rules on their website, although I did find these gems:

  • 2.3: Tire Eligibility: DOT-approved street tires only, minimum treadwear rating 190; no exceptions. BTW, don't call us to moan that there aren't any good tires sold in that range. That's the damn point.
  • 2.4: Whiner Eligibility: Whiners are not eligible to compete. If you believe that you might be a whiner, please check with a domestic partner, guardian, or health-care professional before getting the rest of your team kicked the hell out of the race.

  • 6.1: It's Always Your Fault: LeMons is an all-fault environment. You are 100% responsible for what happens while you're at the wheel. Think you're the hittee, not the hitter? We don't care. Think you've been wrongly accused? See the part where it says "we don't care." Your job is to stay out of trouble. If trouble finds you, take responsibility like a grownup and figure out how to avoid it the next time. This ain't the damn SCCA.

My memory isn't what it used to be. It always appeared on the havoc compilations, but it has been a while since I've seen it.

Funniest thing Ive seen in racing perhaps ever

It doesn't beat the time Kyle Busch flipped off a NASCAR official while he had to sit in the pit box for a penalty. It was broadcasted for about 10 seconds before they realized what he was doing.

What am I missing, a NASCAR without a bonnet pushing the other when being passed?
I dont think the hand out the window was a friendly wave. They wouldn't replay it because something as rude as a middle finger on US TV is enough to get the channel taken off air.

Just rewatched it a couple of times, I don't know why but I thought it was a small wing mirror! I was thinking the whole arm would be out the window rather than just his hand...

The advantage of single seaters being that you can make your feelings known even during a crash... and the broadcasters aren't so prudish ;)
