The Can-Am series ran from 1966 through 1975. It was louder, more innovative and quicker than F1 on the longer, wider and smoother circuits that they shared in common. All its champions were either F1 world champions (2), F1 race winners (1), or F1 podium winners (3).

Name as many as you can.

Formula 1 world champions: John Surtees (1966) & Denny Hulme (1968 &1970)

Formula 1 Race Winners: Bruce Mclaren (1967 & 1969)

Formula 1 Podium Winners:
Peter Revson (1971), George Folmer (1972), Mark Donahue (1973) & Jackie Oliver (1974)

I have to thank my dad for getting Pete Lyon's book "Can-Am" and thank my younger self for poring over it as a kid to remember all of that.

Excellent, except that I had omitted Revson in my thinking, and you have counted him a podium winner and not a race winner.

Congratulations on reading this great book!

Who was the last driver to start the Indy 500 with a qualifying speed of less than 200mph? Name the driver and year.

Wow. I literally just typed a random year into Wikipedia, found a 199.8xx lap and hoped. Didn't expect that

Monza has hosted 66 F1 races. Spa has hosted 49. Suzuka has hosted 27. But which three circuits have hosted exactly 20?

Hmmm, all of the current circuits have either been on the calendar (mostly) uninterrupted for too long or are too new to have hosted 20 races, except for maybe Mexico City. If I'm not mistaken, Albert Park hosted it's 21st consecutive race this season.

Magny-Cours hosted 18 races from 1991 through 2008, so that's out and I don't think any other French circuit hosted as many races either. Imola hosted too many. Zandvoort was almost ever-present on the calendar from the 50s through the 80s. I don't think Estoril (mid 80s to mid 90s) or Brands Hatch (alternated with Silverstone for a while) hosted enough races. Maybe Osterreichring if you count the A1 ring/RBR as a different circuit? Maybe the Nordschelife or Nurb GP if you count them separately?

My guesses will be Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Kyalami.

Two of the tracks you mentioned in the post were correct, while you didn't mention the third. See if you can deduce which 2 and the 3rd track.

Did You Know?

Steve McQueen raced in the British Touring Car Championship, or the British Saloon Car Championship as it was called then. John Whitmore had won the 1961 championship with one race to spare and Whitmore, who knew McQueen from motorcycle racing, offered him his Mini for the last race at Brands Hatch.

McQueen finished 3rd in class alongside Vic Elford and Christabel Carlisle. A commendable achievment given that he did not know Brands Hatch.

He is also known to have competed in car races at Aintree, Goodwood and Oulton Park in sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type.

What motorsports accomplishment do Pete Lovely, Jim Hall, Dan Gurney, Bobby Rahal, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, Jonathan Rea and I all have in common?

They're all quite mad?

It can't be that they all have parts of racetracks named after them... is it something specifically Laguna Seca related? They all had their first race there?

Close, you're almost there. It is something specifically related Laguna Seca. But we did not all have our first race there - although I think Lovely won the first one held at the Monterey venue.

No way! That was all on the basis of remembering the Rahal straight (and how many virtual crashes I've had on the entry)! :D

Is it that you've all won a real life race there?
Yes! I was winner in the NCK (Northern California Karters) Laguna Winter Classic , 1-29-2011. In the final and deciding 30 minute heat, I came from 22nd to 1st for the win.

You all raced at Laguna Seca and moved on to try Formula One.
I wish!
