Patiently waiting for the Senna film...which is not so much a documentary, or rather its a well-structured documentary, rather than just stating facts, it tells a story. The critics have been praising quite a bit so far.

If anything, I want it to come out so that I can show non-car/motorsport enthusiasts who Senna was and hopefully get them into motorsport. 👍

DAYS OF THUNDER is pretty much just TOP GUN with the particulars changed and Nicole Kidman in place of Kelly McGillis.

Tom Cruise has Days of Thunder. I have Nights of Lightning .

This looks like it should be a good docu-drama when they finish it. I know its not what the OP was looking for but im sure a few others would be interested in looking into it when it gets completed.

Watched a couple fascinating documentaries recently, actually. "Hunt and Sheene: When Playboys Ruled the World," as well as the BBC feature about the 1955 LeMans catastrophe (I forget the exact title). The former was on vimeo a few weeks ago but seems to have been deleted, and the latter is unavailable now because it's been too long since it aired last. But if either crops up again, highly recommended!

A movie set in 1939-1949

reddirtrising.com

Based on a true story, 'Red Dirt Rising' is the story of love in the time of moonshine as three of stock car racing’s earliest heroes come of age to find escape from life's challenges on the track, ultimately shaping the future of their families --- and auto racing --- during the Fightin’ Forties.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Gone in Sixty Seconds, i know it's not a racing movie but never is 2 fast 2 furious :dopey:

Driven is actually about Champ Car, not F1. It's also like the worst motorsport film ever, easily the most inaccurate of the bunch.

Yep... Another film that thinks that all you need to do to overtake is stamp on the accelerator... Why wasn't he on full throttle anyway? :yuck:

Don't you mean... change up/down a gear then stamp the accelerator. On a high speed oval.

I don't know why Gone In 60 Seconds is being talked about, it's hardly a motorsport film.

If you like action and cars Thunderbolt with Jackie Chan

Only non-dubbed. The dubbed english version his hilariously bad, a perfect example of how dubbing can completely change a more dark and serious film into pretty much a comedy.

The guy who did that Long Way Round bike film did one about competing in the Dakar Rally, can't remember what it was called though. The 2nd installment of Disney/Pixar's Cars films is coming this year, maybe worth a look.

So far, all I know of is Driven, and Days of thunder(and lol @ the F1 chase down Chicago in Driven).

It's already been pointed out, but I want to make sure anybody reading over this topic sees that Driven has no Formula One in it. As I recall, it was originally supposed to be about F1, but something caused that to not work out and they went with Champ Car. I sort of liked the film, in general, but it was full of crap. As soon as the film starts it hypes up Champ Car with some BS statistics about their viewership that suggested it was higher even than F1.

You forgot Grand Prix!

It's old, but in a way that's good because it features courses and cars from the 1960s. Grand Prix is a must for any serious racing fan. If they're not interested in Grand Prix, they're not interested in motorsports.

I love the fast and furious movies. Nothing else brings out the bada**ness of cars than these movies. But they're not professional motorsport movies. Just action flicks.

Agreed. I enjoy them, but don't regard them as motorsport movies.

That too. It's pretty awful. I liked the film when it first came out, but only for the racing driver cameo's/parodies and that girl of course. I'm 23 now, driven came out about 10 years ago, I was in love with that girl back then. :)

As for grand prix, I desperately want to see it, but I can't find it in any of the stores in glasgow. Wouldn't make sense to buy it just now, as I'm currently living on a friend's couch, but as soon as my visa comes through (very soon), I'm off to Vancouver. I'll try and check out that store Blaquejacques was talking about.

I'm not sure how many people are aware of this. I'm both excited and nervous. It "could" be an unbelievable film. I'm thinking of taking back all the bad things I've said about Ron Howard over the years.

It certainly sounds like it has the potential to be one of the biggest motorsport films ever. Gonna keep an eye on it for sure.

Talladega Nights is good for just being quite a funny representation of NASCAR, definately enjoyed that one.

Just downloaded truth in 24(for free) it's just over an hour and a half and can be downloaded on Itunes, its a documentary about the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Would me saying that Talledega Nights is my favorite bother anyone? If so, I absolutely love that movie, and can basically quote it verbatim. You want a happy ending? Doesn't get much better than:

Cal: Shake 'n Bake?

Ricky: No, never again.....*points at Cal* It's Magic Man, *points back at self* and El Diablo.

Cal: El Diablo? What's that?

Ricky: I think it's Spanish for "fightin' chicken," or something like that.

Cal: That's awesome!

Talledega Nights is awesome, haven't seen it in awhile, might have to look around for it and watch it again.

There is so much win in that movie. Rece (Ricky's dad) doesn't get a ton of credit for being really funny either.

"I'm a war veteran! Diabetic! Applebee's has rats! I found a whole rat in my Cobb salad!" *is thrown out of Applebee's*

I wonder how it may change in Hollywood's hands...Niki and James actually got along well, despite never being teammates. Having read both biographies of them during their times in F1, that season's always been interesting, as it's when F1 was still quite dangerous, the drivers had less camaraderie with one another, but the ultra-professionalism had not yet taken hold of the sport. Should be interesting, of course. I personally can't wait for it.

Le Mans and Grand Prix are absolute musts.

Can't really mention any others, although Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo is probably 10x more interesting than the re-make, although I've never seen the recent iteration. Obviously, not terribly serious, but good fun and silly.

Never saw Driven. Figured I'd catch it on cable by now.

Talledega Nights... was funny, but at times I think I was the only one in the theater laughing. They really hit on a lot of jokes and absurdities of NASCAR and F1, and the biases the fanboys (and non-fans) have about racing.

I finally got round to seeing grand prix in the last few months. It is essential viewing. I'm not sure how much the film will differ from reality. I don't know if Lauda has read the script, but he seems pretty happy about it.

I just hope it's not a one sided affair like Senna apparently is. From what I've heard, Prost was made out to be the bad guy.

Senna was a celebration of Senna, his emotional highs and lows, to Senna he was the bad guy. Thats the view its giving you.

So If someone was to make a film celebrating the great career of Alain Prost and portrayed Senna as the bad guy, everyone would be ok with it? Senna was one of the all time greats, but if such a film was to be made there would be an outrage.

Sorry to dig this one up, but although I'm very suspicious of the quality of RUSH ...

(if what I read is true and we are going to have a show about Hunt's personal life, sex life, marriage, wife, adultery, divorce, supposed wife-deal made with Burton, etc ... in that movie :yuck:)

... I'm not however indifferent to the 70's Formula 1 cars the production has been using, filming, and taking pictures of. So I have been following the director's twitter feed and every now and then some pics worthy of sharing do show up.

Here the latest:

I suppose it's the 1976 Japanese GP grid, we can see a tiny bit of the pole sitter's car (Andretti's Lotus) in the left of the picture.

Yep, that's the japanese GP alright

Notice the Brabham-Alfa at the back (I suppose it's Carlos Pace's car, 6th on that grid). Oh aannnd ... look though the grid girls legs .... (not that) .... there's a glimpse of a red car with a silver rear wing there. You guessed it, it's Lauda's Ferrari in 3rd grid position.

This one has this description:
Ron Howard
Remote camera on high speed vehicle for chasing and tracking fast moving subjects. In our case, F1 cars from 70s

This one needs no description :)
