Well, I am the only person I know that owns a quad processor machine and now I am the only person I know that has four monitors connected to his/her home computer.

kinda cool anyway

In a work situation it's nice to have that much digital desk space to spread stuff out on. Just like having a big desk helps you spread out paper work to look at everything at one time.

At home ... no reason really. I just like to have a bunch of stuff open at one time and I had hardware laying around. I'll probably be switching to three 19" monitors soon, though, as it's 115 degrees from one monitor to another.

Can I come over to your house and play Flight Simulator?

Please?!

Pretty please?!!!

Awesome! I think that website on the left-center monitor looks familiar... :)

I have a quad display Matrox card im my desk at work. But its a G200 so I think 1 screen is enough for me :D

Quad processor  what kind of processors are they?

My quad CPU box is a 166 Pentium Pro x 4 with 256mb of memory. It's an IBM PC Server 704 with twelve 4.2GB hard drives and three 420w power supplies.

It's big, old, and slow.

I've gone back down to one monitor at home, though I'm thinking about cranking it back up to three. Odd numbers work so much better anyway.

My uncle works at intel and had a Quad Xeon CPU with 4 P4s. I don't know the exact specs.

Now, he just has a P4 3.4GHZ Extreme Edition! :p

Which is basically an overpriced, overclocked 3.0 chip. (Someone got ripped.)
No biggie, though. I didn't buy it.

Anyways, I'm in the process of converting my server project from components that are in the case at the time being, to the final pieces. I'm temporarily using the case as my gaming pc case, which will be done pretty shortly. I'll be using either a 2 processor or 4 processor mobo with prolly Xeons, because I have yet to be satisfied with my AMD64 3400+. I just don't think windows and it like eachother, but no biggie. I'm not sure on Linux or not, but that's a little further in the future. Gotta purchase the 8-32 gigs of ram :D.

His uncle works at Intel. I doubt there was any rippage going on.

Sounds like you're building one hell of a box. What do you plan to use it for?

Wow LoudMusic it took you nearly two years to answer that question
I'm never gonna ask you anything. :)

When are you going to upgrade that machine because it is really slow by todays standards?

*edit* DAMNIT :banghead:

Well, the story behind it is quite interesting. Two of my friends had my current job before me. They needed a big file server with tons of storage back in `98 and they found that IBM server for cheap - like $6000. Keep in mind that 40GB was a whole ****-ton of storage six years ago, and this thing had 42.4GB in a super redundant configuration, for what apparently was an inexpensive dollar amount.

Those two guys left and I took their place. I was the admin of the box for a couple years when I replaced it with a new Dell server (dual 450, half a gig of ram, 6x 72GB storage) and the old IBM was no longer needed. So I asked my boss if I could take the old decrepid computer home. Basically it was a novelty. I didn't even power it on for over a year, and when I did I only ran it with one power supply and one hard drive.

I am currently running a 1.5Ghz Athlon with a gig of ram and a cool video card of some sort. At work I have a 2.6Ghz P4.

That Dell server that replaced the IBM is now nearly six years old and needs to be replaced. I'm thinking about just getting the 14 drive RAID box from Apple and plugging it into the XServe. 3.75TB is the current "whole ****-ton" of storage (:

Ahh, makes sense now. Well, the box is gonna be for a multiple server. Teamspeak, FTP, and also a few game Hosting. :D

You could run that on an old Athlon 1800 XP with half a gig of memory. Don't go wasting your money on enterprise class hardware for simple things like that.

He wasnt't ripped at all. This is his workstation comp. He payed nothing for it (but can't bring it home... :() His home comp is a modest P4 3.0 Prescott (He worked on the Prescott project, he was a debugger). He built his daughter (5 year old daughter) a dual 500MHz P3 Machine. 👍

Not bad. Dual machines are the way to go. There are significantly fewer instances where a single process can bring your whole computer down. That is if you're running a propper operating system (:

Well, not quite. The FTP server will host up to 2 Terabytes worth of storage. Then, with 4 games (UT2004, Far Cry, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor), there is no way even a gig could handle those alone. Teamspeak would be able to be managed by what you've listed, but not much more than that.

One of the forums I go to hosts a BF Vietnam, BF1942, SW Battlefront server on a dual 2.8 Xeon with either a gig or two of RAM. It's barely scratched.

They run teamspeak for all of those games on a PIII 800MHz.

How many people on each server are there? Because when testing UT2004 alone, I have had up to 50 people on at a turn. When running the higher amount of people, I get numbers close to 500 megs of ram. Of course, this is also a pretty intense game, so I doubt all are like it.

But, there are also other reasons why I want a server of that magnitude, bud. The FTP server will also be in place, and since I'm trying to get my own T1 server (maybe, I don't know of their region yet) it will definitely be put to the test.

I've asked them, I'll tell you soon.

I've got to say, though. A T1 wouldn't even touch what a server of that magnitude could do.

This place hosts their Teamspeak alone on a burstable T1.

They have the game server on a 20 meg fraction of OC-3.

Edit: Okay, the server is a Dual 2.8GHz Xeon w/HT, 1GB DDR2. It runs three games, each 40 people rooms. Battlefield 1942 w/Desert Combat mod, Battlefield Vietnam, and Starwars Battlefront. They plan on raising the room caps to 48 players a peice, though.

Nice, 40 people caps are nice, then again 48 people caps are nicer. At full pace those would take some ram, though.
