Not trying to be a jerk here, but you've used half a year finding a car and you almost choose this?

I think general consensus is that the Contour is probably not the choice for you - at the very least not with a hideous stripe down the middle.

I haven't been through the whole thread to discover your likes and dislikes, but I'm guessing from your username that you're a Ford fan, so why not just find a half-decent Focus or ZX2? They'd both be cheap to insure and they'd allow you to save up for something a bit more special later on. ZX2s even look okay to my European eyes, and you could get a manual one with a bit of hunting:

Lol. I'm not buying it, nor will I ever unless it's all that left. But it's still my pick for last resort.

I didn't even remember those!

And to help you out, I like V8 power, RWD, stick. But I make exceptions to cars I find very fun to drive, like a Honda Prelude

ZX2 gets classed as a "sports car" to some extent and you'll be charged quite a bit more than a comparative Focus for insurance unless you go the PL, PD route.

Ah right. In that case, I'm not too sure as I don't have too much knowledge of the kind of cars you can get in that configuration. Maybe just a 90s Camaro or something then, or a 70s Firebird. Do you guys have classic insurance? In the UK insuring classic cars is dirt cheap as long as you limit your mileage and keep the car in the garage.

Ah right. I was just making guesses really. Whenever I search for them they're described as "economy coupes" and "gas savers" so my assumption was that they'd be fairly low down the range for insurance.

That's the only route I'm going. It costs 2300 just to add me to my parents policy

As far as I know I don't think I'd get a big insurance break for having an old car. The only real V8 powered affordable things I've found so far are Thunderbirds and Mark VIII's. So if it's gonna have a smaller engine, fun and stick are musts.

Well the '88 is cheaper, but the '84 has a brand new engine, and it's a Jasper, so it's good quality. Not to mention it also has new wheels and tires.

Jasper 5.0 rebuild = run. They can and will use cheap stuff.

The 88 will be the quicker and more reliable of the two thanks to better heads and intake.

Why don't you just buy a car, drive it, sell it and buy something new if it doesn't suit you? Why spend half a year debating what car to choose when you're going to end up with something ****ty anyway?

And please stop the "my soda is bigger than your Honda" crap. Only makes you look dumb.

1) This will be my first car, and I want something I'll be happy with. I don't plan on buying something, just to find it doesn't suit me. That would be stupid on my part and most likely I'd lose money on the deal.
And second, I don't have anything against Honda, just the ricer half of their customers.

Thanks for the info RJ. I'm gonna be talking with my parents over the '88 to see if my mom is in approval. If she is, all should be go:tup:

The price is a big selling point with me. The seller also says it's ready for a turbo

That's true, 1 grand is a damn good price. Just make sure if you look at it, give it a thorough once-over!

Good way of thinking then. I know too many kids who will pass up the same car just because it doesn't have the big V8.

Because that's one of the dumbest things you can do when it comes to cars. NEVER buy something you won't enjoy having around, esp. for a first car because you'll be using it for a long time.

That also wastes way too much damn money to buy it, hate it, sell it, and then buy something else. Too much time, and too much hassle with the insurance companies & dealers in the US.

The only people who do that are the folks who go through 4 Ferraris in a year. I don't think Mustang has that kind of money.

It won't get away without that. And possibly even a CarFax

Thanks 👍 I don't have that kind of money, you're right. I can't do that and still be sitting in an OK position

News! Local stuff!

My buddy is selling his 1987 V6 Camaro for 1600. It has 53k on it, auto, t-tops, and new stereo for CD/iPod. I'm testing it out either tomorow or wednesday.

So, does anybody know any problem areas in that vintage of camaro?

The guy to talk to would be JCE on Third-Gen Camaros. Seems like everyone else on here has more to do with Fourth-Gen models. I've got a First-Gen in my Dad's barn, but thats a different story....

Only thing I know is that the V6 isn't exactly "powerful," but it doesn't sound like a terrible deal. Actually, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Its going to be a good base for whatever you decide to do with it, or better yet, just a good basic Camaro to keep clean and maintain for a while. My car is 10 years newer and I've got 30,000 more miles on it... And thats "low" for a car of my vintage.

JCE never seems to be around anymore, he'd be all over this.

I could probably talk him down too because the compressor is not working. I just hope it drives good

And it's time to say, tomorow I'll be checking out this Camaro and seeing if I can talk down my buddy 'cause the AC doesn't work.

Even if I can't, it's got T-Tops so it's like a vert, and this florida after all
