I think general consensus is that the Contour is probably not the choice for you - at the very least not with a hideous stripe down the middle.
I haven't been through the whole thread to discover your likes and dislikes, but I'm guessing from your username that you're a Ford fan, so why not just find a half-decent Focus or ZX2? They'd both be cheap to insure and they'd allow you to save up for something a bit more special later on. ZX2s even look okay to my European eyes, and you could get a manual one with a bit of hunting:

And to help you out, I like V8 power, RWD, stick. But I make exceptions to cars I find very fun to drive, like a Honda Prelude

Ah right. In that case, I'm not too sure as I don't have too much knowledge of the kind of cars you can get in that configuration. Maybe just a 90s Camaro or something then, or a 70s Firebird. Do you guys have classic insurance? In the UK insuring classic cars is dirt cheap as long as you limit your mileage and keep the car in the garage.
Ah right. I was just making guesses really. Whenever I search for them they're described as "economy coupes" and "gas savers" so my assumption was that they'd be fairly low down the range for insurance.
Well the '88 is cheaper, but the '84 has a brand new engine, and it's a Jasper, so it's good quality. Not to mention it also has new wheels and tires.

The 88 will be the quicker and more reliable of the two thanks to better heads and intake.

Because that's one of the dumbest things you can do when it comes to cars. NEVER buy something you won't enjoy having around, esp. for a first car because you'll be using it for a long time.
That also wastes way too much damn money to buy it, hate it, sell it, and then buy something else. Too much time, and too much hassle with the insurance companies & dealers in the US.
The only people who do that are the folks who go through 4 Ferraris in a year. I don't think Mustang has that kind of money.
