Issues with that gen of Camaro, especially with T-tops...
CHASSIS FLEX.
CHASSIS FLEX.
Exactly! It's all the positives of a 'vert with all the practicalities of a hardtopBah who needs A/C?![]()

CHASSIS FLEX.
It's going to feel like jello when doing anything but going straight. Makes everything feel sluggish. And what does that do in terms of performance? Remember it's a V6 so it won't have that much power

The guy to talk to would be JCE on Third-Gen Camaros. Seems like everyone else on here has more to do with Fourth-Gen models. I've got a First-Gen in my Dad's barn, but thats a different story....
Only thing I know is that the V6 isn't exactly "powerful," but it doesn't sound like a terrible deal. Actually, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Its going to be a good base for whatever you decide to do with it, or better yet, just a good basic Camaro to keep clean and maintain for a while. My car is 10 years newer and I've got 30,000 more miles on it... And thats "low" for a car of my vintage.
JCE never seems to be around anymore, he'd be all over this.
I could probably talk him down too because the compressor is not working. I just hope it drives good
3rd gen with T-tops = EWWW CHASSIS FLEX.
It's also slow and isn't good enough on fuel to justify its gutlessness.
1. Its an Fbody
2. Its T-Tops
3. Its cool
Who cares if its slow. It will soon be a classic and he will love the car forever. And it doesn't take much to make these cars--even in V6 trim--very fast.
Look up cheap car in local ads, go see car, transfer money, buy car
Okay, so I ended up with the first car I wanted to, not some random car, but I didn't spend half a year thinking pros and cons. If the car hadn't answered to my expectations I had sold it. Why spend so long time on something so simple? Find some cheap cars, compare insurance prices on them and go for the cheapest one. Not what you're asking for and not what you wnated to hear, but it's my advice![]()
Responses in bold1987 3rd gen? BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY!!!! Do not hesitate. They run forever, and it takes very little money to drop a V8 in it or turbo that V6 for stock V8 beating power. Buy buy buy!
I want to, but my dad doesn't approve due to lack of AC/heater. Stupid reasons
The base V6 isn't powerful but well enough fun to have. Plus its a damned Fbody, why not get it?
It felt faster than the '04 Mustang V6 I get to drive, so it's more than fast enough for me
Get used to the A/C compressor not working. That and the fan switch turning the fan on when its hot. Other than that it should run forever. I drive the piss out of mine and it is still kicking! Almost 251k miles and still going strong. Make sure you get one with a reasonably good interior as finding an interior in good nick is nearly impossible without shelling out about $200+. Oh, and dynomat or insulate the interior if you want a quiet ride.
So, get some pics up!!!
Final thought: 3rd gen > 4th gen
Damn right! It'd be fast enough for me, there's what counts1. Its an Fbody
2. Its T-Tops
3. Its cool

^ What he said. Much as I'm sure it'd be very nice to have a V6 Camaro on your drive as your first car, you won't be doing it justice buying a cheapo one because it's all you can afford. Better buying something that wasn't as nice to start with but in better general condition, even if it's a bit boring. Drive around in the boring car for a bit until you've saved enough to buy a nice example of a nice car like the Camaro.
Strike two. They rarely seal and they don't help third gens' tendency to be more flexible than an Olympic gymnast.
Third gens don't look bad, fair enough, but if you want cool, there are soooo many other options that would make a better first car... That don't have as many drawbacks.
And about the whole climate control thing...I've been down in Florida during the summer. It can get BRUTAL. I'm the type of guy that will drive with the windows down at pretty much any opportunity, ranging from like 40 degrees to 95 degrees, but Florida summer heat is just nothing I would try to brave with no AC.
3rd gen Mustangs are a winner too--1979-1993. Just avoid the 4cyl. Slow, electrical and cooling issues.
1 First generation (1964–1973)
2 Second generation (1974–1978)
3 Third generation (1979–1993)
4 Fourth generation (1994–2004)
5 Fifth generation (2005–2009)
6 Sixth generation (2010–Present)
Bite, bite hard. 305, meh. 3rd gen, meh.
BUT THE PRICE SCREAMS HELL YES.
Definately snag the TA.
As a 305 3rd gen owner I take offense.![]()
