after skimming over most of the thread i would agree that headsets and private rooms will be the way to go. for everyone that doesn't like the headset idea, remember this, to my knowledge all pro race drivers have headsets to comunicate with their team. so it can't be that distracting. we are sitting in our living rooms, they are driving at @200 mph.
i would like them just to say "my bad" if i hit someone by mistake or even tell them "i am coming up on the inside". periferial (sp?) veiw in this game is not very good. just my thoughts.

..........
And yes i would like to have a voip in gt5p, with mute option........

Why?
- To mute the incoming conversation - don't put on a head set
- To mute your outgoing message - why use a headset if the others can't hear

A headset would probably only really work in a controlled environment where rules of engagement have been set upfront and then only to be used to e.g. apologise if a mistake is made. Usage in a public environment would probably lead to disaster (examples given in earlier posts) rendering it useless.
My 2c worth.

AMG.

Good idea if you ask me half the time being punted or when i punt someone its an accident an im not able to say sorry waiting at the side of the road doesnt really show much but if you actually say it.....

:odd: You really think so? Every time that I get punted, or something of the like, and the other person stops on the road, all I am hearing is "I am sorry, I didn't mean to do that, here let me make it right by waiting for you."

Maybe that's just me?

I am a member of a race team and we use ventrillo so most the time the majority of the people I race are on my team which really makes the driving experience better for everyone.

Private lobbys would be the killer on getting punters on the public section to play and ram eachother, yes you would be propably right that Mic + Public would reach the point of disaster.
Mic's are good to tell the buddy you are racing that you are sorry of hitting in accidently.
In community like this with good racers know to be quiet and tell only the important messages instead raping the Voip

its obvious that the naysayers in this thread have never played forza.

I'm assuming that I would be a naysayer - since I'm saying that headsets alone will do nothing except enable you to have someone else's choice in music, or a foul-mouthed tirade from a no-necked chimp piped directly into your living room/ear.

I've played Forza.

how does using a wheel improve sight lines? am i missing something here?

With the D-pad on a wheel you can change the in-car view to 45 degrees left/right both ahead of and behind you (reverting to directly ahead when you release the D-pad).

Answer: you can also do it on sixaxis or dualshock, just go to OPTIONS -> Controller settings (or key configuration, don't remember exact phrase), there you have LOOK LEFT & LOOK RIGHT which you can assign as you like (same thing with Live Dynamics)

Bit narrow minded? Don't go tarring everyone with the same brush. I get what you're saying that without private rooms this is what we'll get, but I'd imagine most with mics don't pay £25 for the opportunity to announce to the world that they've just bought Now Hardcore Trance 103?

If you really want to race with friends and talk to them at the same time you can use Skype or other communcation programme. You don't need voice chat in game for that. Played few online games with voice chat before and it is so annoying listening to some useless comments. I agree in games like FPS voice chat is important, but not in racing games... for what? To say sorry? If you ram me off the track you can always wait for me and it means more than ramming people off saying sorry and continue the race. Also I can't imagine situation when I am driving and somebody is shouting to the mic: 'look out I'm comming from right side!'... so ****** what? Overtake me and shut the **** up, I'd say. It is not like he's lapping me and I have to get out of his way.

[/rant] :grumpy:

Don't want no voice chat.

Private lobbies are the best solution for online idiots

I agree but on xbox live you have the option to pull up a list of all the members in a room and mute the ones you dont want to hear. After the race started you would be in trouble but it still can weed out some retards

This is true - though it is pre-mapped for all wheels I've used.

Squeeze me? Baking powder? Can you point out where I said everyone with headsets does what I said? I mean, I have a headset...

I don't recall the last time I was in a public lobby in CoD4 without having techno played directly at my eardrum. In fact I took to turning the headset on in the lobbies so that it didn't come out of my giganto-speakers, then off again in the game area.

That's exactly my experience of headsets in games too. Sure enable the feature and let the music sharing and swearing begin. But please let us mute the nonsense and concentrate on the racing.

I use the Socom 3 wired headset with the mute button, so any tool causing grief, I just hit the mute button for some peace and quiet.

We have been using Teamspeak since the JP release in '07 and IMO the game is ten times better having voice. I'm not so sure if I want to hear everyone's voice in the race but among friends it's a blast. We use the clock on the start screen to coordinate everyone pressing the start button at the exact same time which gives us a semi private room 98% of the time. When you see 12 yellow 430's in a race it's probably not a coincidence.

Having 12 sets of eyes identifying the troublemakers goes long way to ensure a good run for most of us. It's like trying to outrun a cop with a radio in his car. :sly: What's also great about it is you can alert someone that doesn't realize you're in his blind spot so he doesn't come down into you. Also it's much more efficient than using the clock alone because you always stay with the same crew for a lot more racing.

So voice among friends - GOOD IDEA.:) Voice with every Tom, Dick and Harry - BAD IDEA.:nervous:

Personally i hope voice chat never makes it into public races, its inevitable you'd have to endure all the crap that you do in most other games online, maybe some sort of push to talk feature would work but open comms during racing - no thanks.

I'm sure voice chat in a room with just GTP members would be benefical.
But I've played a lot of online games (counter strike, team fortress 2, CoD4, etc.) and I'd rather not have a 6 year-old kid call me 🤬🤬 and scream in my ears... Although sometimes it is amusing.:sly:

The cons seem to outweight the pros...

That's why if we have private rooms, there MUST be booting people out if you guys don't like punters.

Thats OK in theory, but you will have the host kicking people for no reason, like in many other online games that have the kick feature. I think a rep system would be a good idea. The more you wreck other people, the lower your rep goes, the cleaner you drive, the higher your rep goes. That way, if you have a low rep, you can only enter races with people of a similar rep. The higher your rep, then you can enter races with cleaner drivers. The games penalty system could decide the rep a person gets, (once PD gets the penalty system to work properly.)

The last few days there were decent folks out there, i play mostly after eleven o clock so that most kids are gone.

Always play Suzuka medium 700 pp in an F40, i tuned it to 688 pp wich gives me the pole. Now i get the feeling some peeps like to piss off the host by ramming him as much as they can.

So at the start i always park my car and let all 11 chaps pass and give them 10-20 sec headstart. The peeps i pass then are respectfull until u get back to place 5 then the winning eager starts to kick in (straight end blocking, ramming sideways, break testing and cutting lines).

The last lap is where the horror begins, so when i notice wankers i park again. I know this sounds stupid and all cuz it's impossible to win, however i don't care if i win.

I like nice clean races with close combat (tiny love punts included), races where all chaps finish with 0.100 of seconds. Yesterday raced with FOB? racers, pretty decent race all the way , havent seen on like that for a long time.
Hope private rooms come soon, so the good old gt4 xlink feeling comes back.

Btw did anyone of u get's a 16 player race on suzuka, here max is 12.

It's good to see you here. 👍

I don't think private rooms and live chat will bring back the old days of Xlinx because the odd contact back then didn't result in carnage. Anyway, here's a small movie of you and I having a fun warm up race. 👍

I hope you enjoy your stay here. 👍

Sorry for the off topic comments, guys. :dopey:

I just watched some movies on Youtube on "Forza Online Voice".

Please PD do NOT include voice chat in any Gran Turismo game!

It would annoy me way to much to hear some people talking the whole time while i am trying to race! The only chance to realize something like that would be is you have like a button that you press to hear and talk on the radio. Like in a real race car. But i think that is a concern not even worth mentioning because right now GT5 prologue has many much more important problems!

The very last thing I wan't is someone screaming in my ear while i'm concentrating on racing. Save the chat for the lobbies.

I swear none of you guys have ever played Xbox. You realize that the headset has two switches where it connects to the controller. One that mutes your own voice, one that is a volume knob. If you turn the volume knob to minimum, you don't hear anything at all from anyone else. If you end up in a room with people that are yelling or swearing or whatever, just turn the volume knob to minimum and you won't hear a single thing.

All of these features for solution to online wreckers such as private rooms and chat have already been near perfected by Microsoft with the Xbox and by the team at Forza. That is why that game is light years ahead of Gran Turismo with regards to online racing (among other things).

I'm not saying that by having the chat and online rooms Forza has is the perfect solution to wreckers. The system iRacing has is the perfect solution. However, the system Forza has in place is good enough so that if you join rooms and are a jackass you'll probably get booted, if you join rooms and people are being jackasses, you can just mute everything and it's your own option to leave the room and find another one. Thankfully joining rooms and leaving them can be done pretty quickly.

In response to the original poster, it's not YOUR solution, Microsoft came up with the chat system for their XBOX Live and Turn10 did their online mode using LIVE's features. And it's not simply voice chat that is the solution, it's one of many things. The real solution to wreckers is IRacing's system where you HAVE to race clean and avoid off track and collisions if you want to access the better cars.

A rep system would work wonders against wreckers - they will all end up in the same rooms wrecking each other, while the clean racers will be racing in the higher rep rooms having good clean races.

As long as the reputation scale is based on cleanliness, and not just number of wins. 1) Because someone can be clean, but not necessarily as fast as every other clean driver, and 2) because dirty drivers win :( which is too bad.

It could work on the number of times someone wrecks someone else, the more they wreck, the lower their rep goes, the cleaner they drive, the higher someones rep goes. In other words, a dirty driver with a low rep can only enter races with other low rep dirty drivers, and the higher rep people can have access to the races with the cleaner higher rep drivers. It wouldn't be based on number of wins but how dirty or clean a person drives.
