Not long ago I got to drive a lancer evolution. Its a mildly funny story...
After a job interview I walked down to the store to pick up a mag. I didnt have a car at this time... Well I come out of the store and notice a car dealer having an off site sale and I spy a 4 wheeled banana sitting off to the side with CF wing.

I walk over and see that it is in fact a heavily used 2003 evo 8 GSR.

Of course a car salesmen appears out of thin air behind me... After a brief talk I ask to drive it...

He agrees and hands me the keys and walks away to get the plates.

Fighting the urge to drive to chicago without him, I wait for him to come back just listening to the engine idle. Once he gets back the fun starts...

I rip ass out of the little parking lot, reaching 4th gear while he drops a load in his pants. After telling me to slow down before someone has a **** (haha) I make my way to the highway.

What then starts is about an hour of pounding on a car my broke ass has NO intention of buying. We go down the highway at tripple digit speeds passing anything with wheels, then slow down to below the speed limit so they cant pass then rocket back up to speed. At this point I'm just trying to piss this guy off... Hes cool about it but I'm laughing inside knowing he just wants to get out and run. I'm sitting there lying my ass off about wanting to buy it and how much I like it... Hes just sitting there holding on for dear life while I mess with his head...

After all is done and we pull back into the parking lot, brakes screaming, engine damn near overheating, we get out and he asks if I wanna look under the hood...

I tell him no I seen that **** before and walk away... Not another word spoken.

My only question is whats next... I rather like the STI... :sly:

I'd have walked away much faster then I did...

Now PLEASE dont get the idea that I drive like this all the time. I was just messing with this guy for a laugh.

Obviously you don't drive like that all the time .. you have a civic.

:sly:

Fun stuff though .. something I'd like to do at some point. Drive an Evo that is.

Yeah civics an do over 100 as I well know, but usualy I'm driving terribly slow trying to save gas.

I did this a couple of weeks ago only I was in a 2004 Acura TSX and a Audi A4 1.8T. I had never driven a slap stick before, and both cars had one, so I had to try it out. Great fun, only it was my sister and girlfriend in the backseat that were crapping themselves. Great fun! 👍

Theres also a story involving me, alchohol, other "stuff" and a Honda saleman who was too eager to hand me the keys to a '01 Prelude one sunday morning, but thats probably better left unsaid.

I'm calling BS.

There's no way in hell they'd let you drive it without seeing your paperwork first. There's also no way you'd drive it "after a short talk" after, any good salesmen would notice, that you didn't arrive in a car at all.

Most dealers that I know of won't allow a test drive of a car like that at all anyway. You either want it, or you don't. No drive required.

I know a guy who used to work at the local Mitsubishi dealer. He'd tell all these stories about 18-19 year olds walking in and running straight to the load of Evo's they had in the showroom.

People weren't allowed to sit in the things unless they were going to buy it, nevermind drive it.

Further reason why I'm calling BS:

I've driven one myself. Your discription would be alot more detailed of how the car actually ran, if you had actually driven it.

I've described it in another thread. I'll quote myself for your benifit...

I've driven an evo and while it was fun, it was impracticle. The brakes were bad, I couldnt see the tach to save my life, the wing hurt visibility and there is NO torque when you're out of boost. I couldnt drive it correctly in stop/go traffic for anything, Not to mention how the shifter was terribly notchy and the clutch engaged terribly hard.

Thr brakes stop the car, but they didnt have the kind of feel I would need if I were to drive the car much. When I say there is no torque, I mean none. Not one pound foot. I think my honda is faster in the lower rpm range. Once boost comes in at about 2800rpm its fast, but nothing before that. I enjoyed driving it on the highway and I'm sure it would be fun at the track if you could deal with the clutch and shifter issues... But no way I wanna drive that thing on a city street.

I was actually having fun testing the car as well... I exagerated a bit on how much I was messing with the salesmen but I'm sure you get the general idea.

I think he let me drive it for the following reasons...

I was dressed well, do not look my age, knew more about the car then he did and it was a used car to begin with...

Hell, I got to sit in the driver seat when they first came out before I even had my license.

Unimpressed.

Unimpressed = lock.

Repeat of unimpressedness = warning.
