All because he won the championship 5 times in a row? Last I checked, he wasn't the first nor only one to do that. I get that everyone got tired of it after a while but come on, Tony stopped his run, end of story. I'm no fan of the guy because it was just as annoying to me as everyone Making Kyle's wins in every series seem like it was significant but frankly, I see no point in repeatidly dragging it back up. It happened and its done.

Actually, he was and he is. Cale Yarborough's record was 3 in a row before JJ came along.

And I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but my post was sarcastic.

Michael Schumacher, though I think the comparison is ridiculous. Schumacher might be one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, but I think most people look at the F1 champion as "the guy that had the best car" that season, much like what was true back when Richard Petty was winning tons of races in NASCAR.

In today's NASCAR, where every car is basically 99.5% identical, winning 5 straight championships is an unreal accomplishment. That would be like Sebastian Vettel winning 5 straight F1 titles if EVERY driver in F1 was piloting the RB7.

Excellent point.

If everyone were to use the RB7, racing would be a lot more closer. Although if you took a look at Webber who didn't really contend Vettel for much of the season for the championship, had exactly the same car.
 
Yeah, but Webber isn't nearly a third-place driver compared to the likes of Button, Hamilton, and Alonso. Put Button, Hamilton, Alonso, and maybe even Schumacher in an RB7, and I think the entire season plays out very differently. I think if you put Massa in the second Red Bull car, and Webber in the second Ferrari, their seasons would have been swapped almost perfectly. Massa could have won a single race among his 10 podium finishes, and Webber wouldn't have secured a single top-4 finish. But, this is an argument for a different forum. :)
 
It would still be a possibility with someone of Vettel's skill though, he is one of the most talented drivers F1 has ever seen. The fact is that the best drivers get snapped up by the best teams in F1, they then have to capitalize on having that good car and win the drivers championship. It's just a different way of doing things, 9 times out of 10 the best driver still wins the race in Formula One as is probably true for any form of racing.

I do admire NASCAR for the closeness of the racing though, partly why I watch it :)

Couldn't tell with the rolling eyes there, just been seeing alot of people jump back on the bandwagon because of the impending penalties from daytona.

Brendan - may I please remind you that punctuation, grammar, and spelling do apply at this forum. Also - get used to what is'nt broken being fixed.

OT - I would think that even the more experienced drivers feel like rookies with all the new electronic aids NASCAR has on the cars now.

Uh... yes he was? Waltrip, Earnhardt and Petty only ever got two in a row, maybe three.

EDIT: Nevermind!

But in all honesty, Schumacher and Loeb make the sport just as uninteresting when they win repeatedly as Johnson did. In a tough economic time, it's hard to say to sponsors you're going to do well and put their name in the spotlight when all they see is "Johnson, Johnson, Johnson!!!"
 
scarslasher - yeah, it need’s to lose it’s marbles. Time for a dig-dug, eh? But, this is what is going to make the races this weekend even more complex. Every track they use during the season comes with its own set of variables, and it can be fascinating how the teams respond to each new problem they have to contend with. A lot of gambling taking place here.
