PS3 launch, price doubts batter Sony stock

Share price sinks 3.6 percent on predictions of $900 per-console manufacturing cost, spring 2007 US launch; contradictory corporate statements follow.

Across the United States, most Americans were relaxing this Monday, courtesy of the long Presidents' Day holiday weekend. Not so across the Pacific in the corporate offices of Sony. The electronics and entertainment giant saw its stock price sink 3.6 percent, dropping to 5,300 yen ($45) per share. The fall affected the entire Tokyo stock market, with the Nikkei index dropping 1.75 percent to 15,437.93 yen ($130.57).

Monday's drop follows a 2.8 percent decline in Sony stock on Friday, after Wall Street stock-brokerage firm Merrill Lynch published a report skeptical of the company's next-generation console plans. It predicted the launch of the PlayStation 3 console could be delayed by 6 to 12 months from its current spring 2006 window, resulting in an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the US.

"We wrote last November that Sony’s design choices for the PS3 had resulted in an expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product," read the report, "and we think that we’re seeing the consequences of those choices play out now. In particular, we think the problem points are the Sony Cell processor and the Blu-ray drive." Merrill Lynch also cited heat-generation issues with PS3 hardware and the far-from-finished state of most games for the platform as factors.

While other analysts have predicted that the PS3 might not hit North America until Q4 2006 or Q1 2007--which would miss the all-important holiday shopping season--Merrill Lynch's stature made many-a-trader skittish. The fires of unease were fueled further by another component of the report, which predicted the manufacturing cost of the console could be much higher than previous estimates of around $500 per unit.

"Our updated analysis indicates that the initial bill of [production] materials for PS3 could approach $900," read the report. The report said that the production cost of a single Cell processor will be $230 at launch, with the Blu-ray drive setting Sony back $350 per unit. However, the $900 price tag presumably includes a $100 optional hard drive, as a breakdown of component costs in the report totals just $795.

If the $900 estimate is correct, that means the PS3 would have to sell for around $775-$800 to maintain a $125-$100 per-unit-loss similar to that of Microsoft's Xbox 360. If the $795 estimate is correct, the console could sell for around $699--within the range recently forecast by a group of analysts and developers polled by CNN/Money.

Merrill Lynch expects PS3 production costs will start falling after 2007, when Sony can shift the Cell chip's manufacture from the complex 90nm process to the more cost-effective 65mn process. Scaling Blu-ray to other devices will also bring down the drive's price. Merrill Lynch predicts that the PS3's production cost will fall to $320 in the three years after its launch, by which time the Cell will only cost $60 per unit and the Blu-ray drive $100 per unit.

In the wake of the report, Sony issued a series of contradictory statements. In Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Kei Sakaguchi flatly denied that there would be any delay to Bloomberg News and other press outlets, saying, "there isn't any change in our plan to release the console in spring 2006."

However, a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokeswoman was more cautious when she spoke with USA Today. "We're aiming for spring, but we haven't announced specific regions," she told the daily broadsheet. "We're waiting for [final PS3 specifications] until the last possible minute, but the launch could be pushed back if they're not decided soon."

Analysts trying to lower the price of the stock, just before it rises. Now's the time to buy stock in Sony, and these "reports" have lower the price just a little bit to maximize profits.

And most of these reports are bs...

If it's a model with a HDD, with Blu-ray recorder and with built in TV tuner, I'd buy it for $900. If it had all that, I would buy it for $1,200.

Hrm.......

I'd buy a PS3 for as much as $699. Well... maybe $799. It depends on what games are available at launch. Much more than that... meh... I'd probably still buy it, but much of my budget is for toys anyway.

The lowly 3DO - remember that? - debuted at $695. I bought a Saturn a little after launch for $495 and still love it and the games. I never did buy a PS1. We'll see.

I agree with Lifters. Sony will do whatever it takes to make the PS3 and Blu-Ray fly, even if it is late, and stock looks good.

you got a point in there but you will have to realiz that the price will drop anyway:) 👍

If it IS sold at that price, I may as well wait until the price drops, MILES too much to pay IMO.

I seem to remember talking about this last May just after E3, with the PS3 effectively getting pushed back time after time because of high costs compared to the XB360. Now they have been saying (atleast here in the US) for some time now that the PS3 will probably be out in Japan in the E3 window, but in the US we would have to wait untill the fall or early winter for the Holiday shopping season.

All this does is give fodder to the Microsoft machine to laugh at Sony and their problems...

Its quyite old'ish news, couple of days old. But im not seeing anything we didnt already know, and that Sony themselves have give some statement to what it plans, and its still a 2006 spring release for Japan.

Sony
  1. "We cannot comment on analyst reports. At the present, we're aiming for a Spring 2006 launch, just as planned."
  2. "If we cannot finalize the specifications, we cannot release the PS3,"
  3. "We're currently waiting until the last minute for the specifications to be finalized."
  4. "We'd end up selecting the best time and releasing it. However, we cannot comment yet."

Its all down to what i posted yesterday about the Blue-Ray temporary Lisence and the fact that the RSX if finished and ready to ship but Sony havent coughed up the dosh, and wont till the Nvidia's finachial year is over at the end of April.

Components bill for new console could be huge, claim analysts

The same report from analysts at Merrill Lynch that predicted that the PS3 could be delayed by over six months has also suggested that the components used to build each console could cost Sony over $800.

Presenting a list of materials needed for each console, Merrill Lynch analyst Joe Osha pins the highest costs on the Blu-Ray drive used by the system, at $350, and the Cell processor, at $230.

Other components including the NVIDIA RSX chip ($70) and the system's memory ($50) stack up with smaller costs such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips to bring the total to $800 (although Osha's report miscalculates this figure as $900).

Although Osha predicts that the bill of materials cost will fall to $320 within three years, his headline figure is stark - and the report describes the situation in harsh terms, stating bluntly that "it's now clear that the box is prohibitively expensive to make."

However, it should be borne in mind that Osha makes no particular claim to have insider knowledge of Sony's manufacturing or materials costs for the console - and while he explains his reasoning for some of the price tags he attaches to materials, others remain entirely inexplicable.

The incredibly high cost of the Blu-Ray drive, for example, is an anomaly that can perhaps be explained by the widespread confusion over the difference between a simple Blu-Ray data drive, a technology which is more complex than existing DVD drives but not enormously so, and a home Blu-Ray player or recorder, which must include a variety of expensive video and audio processing hardware which the PS3 already has on-board as part of its core functionality.

Although it remains a possibility that Blu-Ray drives will be expensive to manufacture, hard evidence of this has yet to emerge - and there is widespread scepticism over the incredibly high price points being attached to the technology by many analysts, especially since the PS3 is expected to have a Read-only Blu-Ray drive, and most other Blu-Ray devices for which even tentative price points have been mentioned are more expensive Read-Write devices.

The other component which Osha expects to be incredibly expensive is Cell, with the price for the chip placed at $230 - a factor, he says, of the fact that the die size of the chip is large, and mostly made up of logic circuits rather than the easier to repair memory circuits.

However, his assertion that the chip will be difficult and hence expensive to manufacture is thrown into doubt by comments made by IBM senior vice president William Zeittler earlier this month, when he said that the firm is succeeding in ramping up yields of Cell "faster than on any chip we've done."

In other words, while Merrill Lynch's report has not only impacted Sony's share price today, but has also kicked off a storm in the mainstream media about the status of PS3, some of its basic assumptions appear to be founded on shaky ground - and like all analyst reports dealing with the technical aspects of console manufacture or game development, it deserves to be viewed with a healthy dose of scepticism.

While Sony has made a habit of announcing key details of its strategy at press conferences in Tokyo, the next planned public discussion of the firm's plans will take place at the Game Developers' Conference in San Jose in late March, where the company's worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison will take the stage to deliver a keynote speech.

This is funny because a few months ago they posted the estimated cost and the cell and blu-ray compoents have nearly tripled in cost from last time.

Video recording would be a matter of software to do so plus the cost if the HDD. video input would be pennies more.

But I'm sick and tired of analysts, they prdicted the psp to be $400 or so. Sam goody's going out of business sell has psp for $140 new.

It's all bull to control the stock market. This always happens, I won't pay more than £350 for a PS3 that's about $600-$650 but I don't think it will cost more than that.

It's also funny how Sony and IBM reported the Cell chip going into the PS3 will cost around $35 a piece. Now it's over one-hundred more? Plus, the components to make the Blu-ray driver was only $60 to $70 difference to the PS2 driver. Now, it's going to cost $320? BS...

I think about $400. Consoles have been selling for $300 for the past 6 or so years, it's about time for these things to get more expensive.

I'm guessing the release price and dates, let's see how good my swami's hat is. ;)

Base PS3: $349.95 U.S. Will include one controller, power cable, AV cables, broadband cable, USB 2 cable.

Premium rig: $449.95 U.S. Will include above, 40gig hard drive, web browser/email package, coupon for one month free Sony Online service, discount coupons for several games.

Both systems will use Blu-Ray read only drives, but will accept any digital disc format.

Release date Japan: July 7th

Release date U.S.: September 31st

Release date Europe: Most regions Dec 1st

*crosses fingers for earlier, cheaper* :D

What I've been saying, all along. Though recently, I'm starting to think it will be closer to $400.........

But there wont be a bigger PS3 package with a HDD. The HDD will only come as a seperate add-on, and that's it.

Though, if they made a HDD HDTV recorder version, I would buy it.

Revolution.
My thoughts exactly.
$900 US is a bit much for a console, at the moment.

For that price I expect the casing to be pure titanium, with laser etched playstation logos! :scared:

The article says the material cost will come down to $320 within 3 years. If this was true(I doubt the report of $900 est.), it will take me 3 years to buy a PS3 after the release. :D

The one thing I would like to know is where the Merrill Lynch get thier information from? Did they get from somebody who is actually working on the PS3 and would know what the exact cost of the materials are or is it just mindless speculation?

She had a dream!

kjb, M Lynch has analysts familiar with the electronics industry. Though they did rather drop the ball in quoting the price of a Blu-Ray recording deck rather than a Blu-Ray drive. That wasn't a small slip. But the rest of their assessment is pretty close.

Keep in mind that these brand new chips are costly, such as the Cell Processor at $230. What surprises me is the discount that NVidia is giving Sony for the RSX processor at $70, but they must have shared some of the cost of it with Sony.

This is true, so if ML is right, Sony and IBM are wrong. Place your bet's.

I ain't gonna spend more than $500 on the console, and $60 on games/ add-ons. Anything else is too much for my poor self. Well....maybe $600 at launch.
But that's pushin' it.

i think its going to be round $400 which is in my price band, i think i would ship one pver from america maybe because i couldn't wait till december or later this year! If it does come out at a later date, its good, less time to wait for GT5! :dopey:

Thanks Tenacious D. Anyhoo I don't really think Sony would sell the PS3 for more than $500. I know all the features it has, but if Sony is hoping that Blu-ray discs take off then the PS3 must be a hit. Anything higher than $500 (US) is going to turn a lot of people off.

What he said....lol. $500 should be about where it launches at I think because like someone stated earlier previou sconsoles sold for $300 or so and I think it should cap out at $500, $600 at most and even then I will look deep into how GT5 is coming along, if its like GT4 and just 'thrown together' with no options etc...then I wont buy one at all.

I should go back and edit my post. That was a GUESS on my part, though it does look like some sort of release schedule.

I'm hoping that it's not December at all for you folk across the pond, but one date that has been mentioned for Europe is March 2007! So cross your fingers and pray that December 1st is the latest. :nervous:

I don't think that Sony will sell the PS3 for $499 U.S. Now they might, since they know that there's a bunch of hard core Playstation fiends who will want the bleeding edge of gaming hardware. However I don't think even the majority of avid gamers will be willing to shell out that kind of dinero, or able. And that's without memory, other accessories or a single game!

I do think that Sony will be willing to take a substantial loss to get the PS3 out in numbers so that games will sell like hotcakes, so I'm betting the price will be $399 or less. I still think more like $350. I also think that Sony wants the launch of the PS3 to outshine that of the PS2, like it did the PS1. Such numbers will require the console to be under the $400 price boundary.

All analysts have been saying for years that the magic number for a console at release is $299. I doubt that Sony will be willing to loose more than 50% on each console, so that magic boundary will probably be broken this time. Unless Sony is waging a huge propoganda war on the planet, and all the numbers are cooked. And... well, it's not impossible, stranger things have happened.

By the way, doesn't anything seem a bit odd on my September release guess?
