PS3: YOURS FOR 500 EUROS

SCEE senior VP reveals anticipated price for PS3 and confims plans for European launch this November

George Fornay, senior vice-president of SCEE and president of SCE France, has revealed that the company's next-gen console PlayStation 3 is still bound for simultaneous launch, including Europe, this November and that the machine is expected to retail for around 500 euros - well, it'll fall somewhere in the 499 to 599 euros range anyway, apparently.

Speaking on French radio Europe 1, as reported by numerous French gaming sites, Fornay admitted that the price point could be considered high for a console - however, he was keen to point out that it's peanuts when you consider the PS3 is a high-definition platform, fully supporting the Sony-backed Blu-ray disc format.

Looking over at the well-worn CVG exchange rate abacus, we've calculated that 500 euros roughly equates to around 350 of our Great British pounds. Whether this pound value is an accurate representation of the PS3's final UK retail price when it hits stores this Autumn remains to be seen.

True, and Sony officially reacted to this by adding that George Fornay meant that the price could range from under 500 € up tp 1000 €.

And George Fornay said that the PS3 should be launched worldwide in November. Which means that hopefully it will, but it would be no surprise if it doesn't.

Flat-out

Thanks for pointing that out. I fell for this one.

Well....... Europe is a strange beastie, but I'd think Sony would be committing commercial suicide if they released it at 1000€. Maybe not, but I'd think by Christmas the 360 library will be looking pretty tasty, and the price a bargain compared to a 1000€ PS3, but we'll see. I'd say that Sony would bite a few bullets and at the most it would launch at 599€. Let's hope that for our Euro friends, the November launch and 500€ is right.

I think the PS3 will be a bargin, some may think it is crazy. But the PS3 will be many of are first Blu-Ray players, or are only Blu-Ray player for Blu-Ray movies.

That's what i have been thinking, people may think it would be really. But if they make it the price of that peopel want it at, it's like selling a Ferrari, at the proce of a Kia.

Frankly, paying $/€500-600 for something so cutting edge and powerful is pretty reasonable. It's just that the sticker shock is a little startling after expecting something in the range of $300-400.

I still wonder if Sony isn't playing some huge cut-throat game with all of us, and a lower price won't be announced. I guess we'll see, and we'll see how many are happy with the launch price, and selection of games and peripherals.

Luckily now that im a responsible working adult I can buy one straight away, instead of having to beg my mummy for one.

Unfortunately being a responsible working adult does'nt guarantee much disposable cash. I'm a responsible working adult and I have bills to pay, and then some. So I'm 'saving' money for the PS3 launch (saving may be an alien term for those under 20). I know for a fact I won't have £400+ laying around to spend on a luxury item!
Saying that I can see this being my last console purchase. I'm getting too old and cynical to buy into new technology too often. The PS3 will have to last me until I grow out of gaming (whenever that may be).

Too true :)
With a wife, 3 kids (and a cat), I have plenty of other uses for 500€. I can only afford the PS3 for a special occasion like my birthday or Christmas.
...or if there is a great RPG that my wife wants to play so bad :trouble:
