I guess with EA it's "I'll believe it when I see it". The only franchise that they have really impressed me with so far is "Dead Space". Everything else is aimed at a casual gamer too much, so I'm not really counting the days until Shift 2. I'm hoping that it turns out good but if not I'll play F1 and GT5 and be OK with it.

I'm looking forward to SHIFT 2 this time, it seems those EA ass-heads know they did wrong to force SMS to tune down SHIFT's physics.

I think it would be better to separate FiA GT1 & GT3 events from the others, these two licensed events should have real world rules included that similar to F1 2010. Well, just some wishes.

I'm also looking forward to get into the cockpit of Bugatti Veyron again, and I'm guessing there could be three different versions - 16.4 '09, Grand Sport (from Hot Pursuit), Super Sport (who doesn't want to see it included?).

Couple of issues from the thread - at least in most sims, getting the "CAD" suspension is simply a matter of getting the geometry and dimensions correct. This is one of the better suspensions from Shift 1 :

You don't really so much need the exact tensions or whatever in this part, those are somewhat easier to do in the back end. But incorrect suspension geometry and incorrect measurement of their weight and moment of inertia in each direction is quite noticeable (a problem for some cars in Shift 1).

Thing two: Shift does actually factor tyre width :)

Thanks for the all the interesting info! :)
The fact that Shift uses the suspension geometry in the simulation is impressive.
I am sure that other so called "simulators" don't even bother with suspension geometry. ;)

Do you know if the different wheel rim sizes change the handling of the car in Shift?

That's a complicated question and the answer is essentially I don't know. But. The issue seems to be more that there is not enough data fed into it - there is no change in wheel mass with different rims for example, at least that I can see. The sidewalls and ground<>rim contact have a system to change with differing dimensions, but there is no way to see what this is actually doing other than setting up a camera to look at the tyres (which do change how far they clip into the ground from a variety of physics properties at least) - and then you run into the issue that there's really no good perfectly flat section of track to test it on. Technically yes but in practice probably doesn't amount to much in Shift 1 for lack of obvious data going in and total lack of data coming out.

Well, they did their best with the FIFA series (Soccer). For years, Pro Evolution Soccer (Konami) was THE game for ' hard core soccer gamers' which simulated the sport better, very in depth, while FIFA (EA) usually looked better and played easier. But since the last 2-3 years EA are really taking on Pro Evolution Soccer on the simulation aspect of the game, while It already had the better looks and licenses. And It looks like they are winning. Strange comparision may be, but It gives me hope.

Every article released just gets better and better :)

Speedhunters article, includes plenty on Drifting and Customisation. Best bits:

- Nevada Depot - Large industrial estate for practising drift and testing tuning, including drifting through derelict buildings.
- Dijon Confirmed, which he's drifting around...
- Different bodykits shown
- 3-Rotor engine swaps into any Mazda.
- (The coolest bit) "You will notice that the wheels have visible camber here. I can 100% confirm that these are entirely based on car set up geometry. Any changes to the setup are instantly seen in-game. There is even a testing mode where you can make instant changes to the setup direct to the on-track car. This saves the trouble of having to reload the car/track each time you want to make changes and give you instant feedback on any adjustments"

The article was a great read, in my opinion. But, for me, the best bits were probably the fact that the interior can be altered so much for the different porpuses you would be able to use the car for..

Oh, and this:

Autolog is a new feature BTW which first debuted in NFS Hot Pursuit. Once we connect as Autolog friends we will be able to asynchronously race against each other... meaning that we don't need to log into real time multiplayer sessions to compete. Rather, an in-game messaging system allows friends to compare times and leaderboards in different modes, tracks and car classes.

This game is absolute sickness. The guy that runs SpeedHunters.com is a developer for them... he posts up all kinds of in-game footage... it's absolutely awesome.

So beautiful.

I just hope basic lightning and details will somehow cripple into PS3 version.

Here's a Hundred more screen shots released today:

They're still very pretty, but seems like the earlier screenshots were more photorealistic:

These two pictures together with the favourable previews have prompted me to seriously consider getting the game (which I now decided that I will indeed do so :P )

There's a 2 manufacturer gap between BMW and Chevrolet on the Official Shift 2 website fingers crossed 1 is Bugatti. I too hope the Super Sport is in this though I'm not to fussed on the Grand Sport though at least if it is in the game it won't be a standard car. I agree with jonboy1066 in hoping there's a beta or demo before release though I probably will keep GT5.

I am gonna get this game for the online Mode (Missing for me in GT5)but not getting sold on the graphics though .

Well, I'd agree with you on PES/FIFA 09 and 10, but with 11 EA haven't really taken any steps forward on the sim front and PES really caught up to them, so that's why I didn't include FIFA in my observation earlier.

As far as SHIFT2's graphics, looks worse than GT5, tbh. Not bad, just not as good. The main thing I think is the lighting, it just makes cars look like they are made out of cardboard.

Don't care about graphics or seatbelt stitching TBH.
I just want a competitive game.

BTW, they mention ECU tuning in this article (I assume it's been available in Shift 1). So, how much tuning can you actually do? Is it like GT5, where you slap "tuned" ECU and that's about it or can you actually mess around with ignition timing and air/fuel ratio?

Yes and no. Remember that we know that in motion GT5 has distinct problems with shadows, transparency/smoke effects, popups, and tearing. In a screenshot, GT5 looks better. In motion, we're unlikely to know until it's released.

At the very least, it's not offputtingly horrible. Which is about all I ask for.

I ve just been playing Shift 1 and those liverys - perfect shadows - and sence of speed make up for the worse graphics that it has in comparison with GT5
Too bad I cant say the same about FFB and Physics

Overall, I think Shift 1 is prettier than GT5. Yes the polygon counts and texture resolutions aren't as high, but the subtle details (such as interior things reflecting off the windshield) and the art style (it actually has an art style..) more than make up for it. GT5 looks very nice, but it's representation of sort of 'stark reality' isn't very compelling. Shift (and PGR4) actually paints an environment that imbues the game with (IMO) more character than GT5. Shift 2 looks no different.
