The Panthers are OK. Their place in the standing isn't really their true talent level, but going forward they have some really fantastic pieces. Their best defenseman (Aaron Ekblad) is a franchise level piece to build around, he's like 19 and already one of the top ~20ish defensemen in the league. Between Alex Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Nick Bjugstad they have a really solid group of forwards to build around as well.

But this year's success isn't really sustainable, they're getting outshot consistently (5th last in net shots for), but they're getting a really high shooting percentage (goals/shots) and great goaltending. Good percentages aren't "bad", but it's really not common to be able to sustain an outrageously high shooting percentage, and outside of a few elite goalies it's rare to have a consistently above average save percentage. Luongo is genuinely very good but at his age (36) it would be hard to count on him continuing to play at that level. Every year there's a team like this that gets massively outshot but is bailed out by a good run of goaltending and/or shooting variance.

I'm not as familar with baseball analytics as hockey analytics but they're basically the hockey equivalent of a high BABIP team on offense, and a really low BABIP on defense.

Thank you, friend.

NBCSN is going to show the Dallas Stars at the Minnesota Wild tonight. So it's Sanji Himura's Stars going well north to entertain RedDragon's Minnesota Wild tonight in a little inner-forum play date tonight. Stars at Wild is one of 12 gamse tonight!

From last night, another sort of inner-forum rivalry was between Omnis' Florida Panthers at AnthonyD1993's Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings won 3-0 at the Joe Louis Arena last night in MoTown. Florida's still ballin' right now. Tonight, Florida will be at the Buffalo Sabres.

Enjoy tonight's games.

Wow! Dion Phaneuf was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Ottawa Senators in a 9 player blockbuster, including the Sens 2nd round pick next season.

I'm honestly already marking tonight's game as a loss for Minnesota as we are without 2 of our top blueliners, Jonas Brodin and Jared Spurgeon. We are a fragile team in the words of Ryan Suter and the X expects which is never easy to live up to

Expansion of the NHL happened 50 years ago today apparently. Back on February 9, 1966; what was called the "Second Six" was with NHL franchises awarded to Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and St. Louis. Could you imagine if the NHL never expanded beyond the first six teams? If you're fairly new to the NHL, the Original Six are: Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, and the New York Rangers. More info on this 50th anniversary and how far the league has come: https://www.nhl.com/news/nhls-first-expansion-1966-50-year-anniversary/c-278513886 . The NHL is now 30 teams strong. And according to something I saw earlier today, 30 plus one more when I saw progress being made on the Las Vegas NHL team looking to join the league. The current youngest franchises are the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild- both with their first seasons in the 2000-2001 NHL season.

As for that 9-player trade, that is quite huge between Toronto and Ottawa. I'm pretty sure both teams will benefit.

Currently as of this post, the Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild game is currently 2-1 in favor of the Wild. 4:15 left in the 1st Period.

Don't lose faith in your team!

Apart from being a Blues fan, I would say Wild is probably my 2nd team. I don't get to watch them much though.

On the other hand, similarly to Wild, Blues have had a mass of injuries throughout the season. The only reason we are staying afloat is our rookies and a few guys who have been around a while.

And what happened to Parise being Captain?

Parise was never the captain. He's always had the A. Miko Koivu has been the captain for quite a few years now.

It was another loss to the Wild. OT got us again. For a speedy team we sure can't win in the speediest of situations having just 1 victory in OT this season.

The 3rd line seems to be the only line that fully got the message coach Mike Yeo was trying to send with both 1st period goals scored by that combo of Thomas Vanek-Eric Haula-Justin Fontaine. The only other goal was added by CapFinn Koivu which is good. I guess

I was checking the league standings tonight because I wanted to see how the Wings were doing and I noticed that if the season ended today no Canadian teams would qualify for the playoffs. I looked it up and if that happens it would be thr first time since the 1969-70 season that there wouldn't be a Canadian team in the playoffs.

It would be insane if there were no Canadian teams, considering there are seven of them in today's NHL. It almost sort of reminds me of in NCAA Division 1 Men's basketball a few years ago when no teams from my native state of Texas were in the tournament field. It isn't to say the postseason needs Canadian teams or anything. It would certainly be sad not to see a Canadian team qualify to challenge for Lord Stanley's Cup.

I saw most of the Stars at Wild game on NBCSN, and another loss for RedDragon's Wild. Stars won 4-3. "Panic" is not a word I'd probably want to use in this sense, but it ain't looking good for Minnesota's playoff hopes at present. The Wild were about three points outside of the Wild Card spot heading into this match. This latest loss isn't going to help matters much. Still- there is plenty of time for things to get turned around. It is too early to give up on the season or anything.

Los Angeles. Dang... Kings going into Boston and beating up and beating down the Boston Bruins 9-2. I think I read on ESPN's Bottom Line that all nine goals by LA were from nine different players. It is the Kings' biggest road win since 1993. Kings black and silver all over Boston black and gold.

Congratulations to all the other winners from Tuesday's 12 games.

I love you guys and gals here on GTPlanet. But this is Wednesday- "the night you love to hate." Six teams will play in three different games tonight. So if you want some hockey tonight, here's how this Wednesday looks for you:

* OTT Senators at DET Red Wings
* NYR Rangers at PIT Penguins (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* VAN Canucks at ARI Coyotes

Enjoy some NHL hockey tonight.

I totally forgot about this last night. :banghead:

Last night's results:

* As mentioned by AnthonyD1993, it was a good night at the Joe Louis Arena in MoTown last night as the Red Wings won 3-1 against the Ottawa Senators.

* The NBCSN-aired game was the New York Rangers at the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers found the back of the net, unlike the Penguins. The red/white/blue boys won 3-0.

* Vancouver was the only Canadian team to win last night, as the Canucks tamed the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 in Phoenix.

And that's last night.

Now let's talk about tonight and some of tonight's nine games. RedDragon's Minnesota Wild have a huge game tonight as the Washington Capitals go up to St. Paul, MN. Wild got to... well, get wild and get a spark going to try and get back to their winning form. Brutaka's Chicago Blackhawks will host Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars. You bet your backside this is a crucial match for both teams.

Enjoy tonight's games, and good luck to all of your teams.

WOW!

Alexander Steen.

He had a super sweet back hand goal tonight against the Panthers.

As my favorite player, I am glad he does what he does. I think he is the most underrated player in the NHL. Ok, I do not get to watch every team play, so I will say for the Blues instead of the NHL.

I legitimately never here anybody talk about him. And he has basically played every position for the Blues.

Colton Parayko

Does anybody even know who this guy is?

He is 6 foot, and something large inches tall. He plays defense. He is a rookie to the NHL this season for the Blues.

Not only is he a huge dude, he has a ridiculous hard slapper. But, he knows how to play defesnse too. On the occasion, he is the late man who joins rush full speed and gets a play going too.

I cannot get enough of this guy.

-------------------------------------

At times I loose a sliver of faith in the Blues. Why? They don't put the effort! I mean, there was times where I couldn't count how many times they would let the opponents play dump n' chase, and let them get it. Sometimes they play very very passive, and it worries me. And they don't play smart passive. They play to where they allow odd man breaks all game long. The goalies have been work horses.

I like David Backes, but I vote Steen for Captian.

I read on CBS Sports Network Mike Yeo has been relieved of his coaching duties after another loss for the Minnesota Wild. Sad times for Wild Nation, including for the likes of our RedDragon. Minnesota lost at home 4-2 to Boston77's Boston Bruins 4-2 today.

A few other finals from Saturday as of the time of this post...

* 6-3 was the score in Raleigh as the Carolina Hurricanes doubled up the New York Islanders.

* Regulation solved nothing in Philadelphia, so bring on Overtime. The New Jersey Devils won 2-1 in Philly in Overtime.

Lot of games still going underway, so congratulations to all of the eventual winners of each of tonight's games.

The NBC networks have two great games today. First off, how about Original Six hockey? We got the Boston Bruins at the Detroit Red Wings as NBC's "Game of the Week." Yep- the Joe will see some NHL Original Six action. Another Original Six team, the New York Rangers, will host the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden tonight on NBCSN. This is among the five games to be played today and tonight.

Enjoy some NHL hockey today/tonight.

Gonna be a hard game to win for my Flyers. Will hazard a guess at the final score being 2-1, Rangers.

It's am interesting call to relieve Coach Yeo of his job. He helped lead the Wild to 3 conservative post season appearances and helped to bring in some very good players in Zach Parise, Ryan Suter and Thomas Vanek. However, he made strange calls regarding lines and he was known to have double standards for the veterans compared to the newer guys as well as having a mid season slump every year as head coach including this latest slump that means we will likely have a nice long summer break.
The guy who I feel should really be in the chopping block is General Manager Chuck Fletcher. Of his picks not many could be considered real topline selections. Charlie Coyle and Matt Dumba are probably the mist impressive as of right now. Mikhael Granlund was selected as the centre of the future, our number 1 face off guy. Instead he's way too small, not strong enough and doesn't get into the dirty areas. Couple that with Fletcher's use of draft picks for rental players (see Stewart, Chris and Bergenheim, Shawn) and not only do we have a very empty cupboard in terms of players and picks, but we have years gone from the draft with not real reward.

TLDR:Yeo isn't the only culprit here. Chuck Fletcher should also be getting nervous. The Wild are in rebuild mode and I'm actually thrilled!

A simple recap of the Red Wings/Bruins game (with time remaining still) can be stated as "Goals. Goals everywhere."

Game ends 6-5 Detroit.

Today is Valentine's Day. It's supposed to be a day of love... or not. Already two fights in the PHI at NYR game, and this game basically just started. Got to love the NHL (no pun intended)!

Happy 44th birthday, Jaromir Jagr! Yep. The ageless wonder for the Florida Panthers celebrates another birthday.

Elsewhere... tonight is the first game for the Minnesota Wild under their interim coach. So who is this fellow? The Wild's interim coach is part of the John brotherhood (like myself)- John Torchetti. Minnesota will be on the road tonight playing at the Vancouver Canucks.

There are seven games on today. One game is in progress and another went final. The only final was a 4-1 beating the New York Islanders put on the Detroit Red Wings in Brooklyn. The game in progress is the Anaheim Ducks at the Calgary Flames. The Flames are up 1-0 currently with about 14 minutes left in the 1st Period. Enjoy today's/tonight's games.

Anyone notice what is wrong with this image?

This is Florida Panthers Forward Jussi Jokinen, who is being photographed in violation of NHL Rule 9.3 when he scored the game winner against the Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout tonight. NHL Rule 9.3 governs player's sweaters (jerseys), and it specifically states that "sleeves must extend into the cuff of the glove."

The violation wasn't called, and the goal stood, giving Florida a 2-1 win

If you're looking for a game tonight, NBCSN will show the Dallas Stars at the St. Louis Blues. Some people are even hinting at this game being a 1st Round match in the Playoffs. So there's one game for you on this eight-game night.

Other games... we've got the Boston Bruins going to Columbus to entertain the Blue Jackets. FireEmblem10's Philadelphia Flyers will be at the New Jersey Devils tonight. West meets east as the Los Angeles Kings travel across the country to meet the Washington Capitals.

Enjoy some hockey on this Tuesday night. Good luck to all of your teams (even if not playing tonight).

May I interest you in some hockey, sir/madam? Good! May I interest you in these games to be played tonight? What games? These:

* CHI Blackhawks at NYR Rangers (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* MON Canadiens at COL Avalanche
* MIN Wild at CGY Flames

Speaking of the Calgary Flames, spare a thought for goaltender Karri Ramo. He's out for the season with a torn ACL. This will be a chance for RedDragon's Minnesota Wild to notch together back-to-back wins after having won 5-2 at Vancouver back on Monday. Elsewhere, three Original Six teams are in action tonight. Two of them to clash in New York City as the Chicago Blackhawks set it off at the New York Rangers.

Go enjoy some hockey tonight.

THIS JUST IN...

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has upheld the 20-game suspension of Dennis Wideman of the Calgary Flames. D. Wideman was the one who checked a lineman from behind on his way to the bench seemingly intentional. I thought it was the right call because he whacked the guy intentionally and shown little remorse. It was nowhere near accidental.

Anyways... suspension upheld on Dennis Wideman.
