This is it. This is the final month of regular season NHL hockey. Teams still on the outside looking in have not much time left to qualify themselves for the postseason. Only 16 teams will be able to play for Lord Stanley's Cup. Will your team(s) be one of them?

On this April Fool's Day, we got five games on tonight... including an interesting matchup. You got the State of Hockey- Minnesota, playing in Hockeytown- Detroit. Wild at Red Wings to be played in MoTown at The Joe. Or as it relates to GTPlanet, RedDragon and Northstar's Wild up against AnthonyD1993's Red Wings.

Enjoy not only tonight's games, but this weekend's games.

THIS JUST IN...

The NHL has suspended Chicago's Duncan Keith for six games for his high stick on Charlie Coyle. The suspension is for the remainder of the regular season and the first game of the postseason. I think it's a suitable punishment. This is no slap on the wrist.

Keith forfeits $148,883.35 in salary for those six games. As far as the punishment is concerned, six games is a bit light, especially considering that one of those six games is tonight and he is a repeat offender. Seven games is a bit more appropriate.

Listening to the Bruins/St. Louis game via NHL.com. Rooting for the Bruins here.

Only 6? Geez, I knew the league liked the Hwaks but that's absolutely insane. At least 10 would be more appropriate. Make him miss playoff hockey. Even 7 would be light

This week is the final full week of regular season hockey for the 2015-2016 NHL season. There is still a good deal of hockey to be played in helping set up the Stanley Cup Playoff brackets. Teams still with a chance to make the postseason will have to hope a lot of things go their way to make the postseason. Everyone eliminated basically will play for pride- including every Canadian team, since all were eliminated from postseason play.

Enjoy some hockey today and tonight. Right now, it's an Original Six match as NHL's Game of the Week: Boston Bruins at the Chicago Blackhawks. The game is currently scoreless with 12:36 left in the 1st Period.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard of the Minnesota Wild announced his retirement today. He's hanging it up after 11 seasons in the NHL. I surely wish him well in his retirement.

Not to be forgotten, I want to congratulate Chicago Blackhawks coach John Quenneville on recently winning his 800th game as coach. He's the second-only coach to win at least 800 games as coach.

Five games on tonight. Enjoy tonight's games.

Here's a heads-up for you: next Wednesday is the start of the 2015-2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Having said that, tonight is the finale of Wednesday Night Rivalry for this season. So how do your Wednesday night look this time around? Take a look:

* COL Blue Jackets at TOR Maple Leafs
* VAN Canucks at EDM Oilers
* PHI Flyers at DET Red Wings (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)

Feel free to enjoy some hockey tonight. Stay in the fight if your team still has a chance of making a postseason and hasn't yet clinched a playoff berth.

The Red Wings needed this one. They grounded the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. No rest for the weary- this is a back-to-back for Detroit as they'll be at Boston tomorrow night and then at the New York Rangers Saturday.

Suit up, lace 'em up, and hit the ice. It's hockey time (and go time)! The season continues to wind down. Chances to improve playoff positioning or clinching playoff berths are running out. Games will be crucial heading into this weekend.

If Detroit wins tonight at Boston, the Red Wings will clinch a playoff berth and extend their postseason-making streak to a silver (25) years.

Go enjoy some hockey tonight. 13 games tonight!

So who's "in" as of the time of this post? Here's your list:

! = division champions
!! = clinched conference

--- EASTERN CONFERENCE ---
* Florida!
* Tampa Bay
* Washington!!
* Pittsburgh
* New York Islanders
* New York Rangers
* (to be determined...)
* (to be determined...)

--- WESTERN CONFERENCE ---
* Dallas
* St. Louis
* Chicago
* Nashville
* Minnesota
* Los Angeles
* Anaheim
* San Jose

No division or conference clinching has been done in the Western Conference, though all eight slots on the Western Conference are set. And wow- FIVE teams from the Central making the postseason.

Only one game tonight- Columbus at Buffalo. Tomorrow, however, full slate of games to close out the regular season. So go enjoy some NHL hockey tonight and tomorrow night.

Detroit lost to the Rangers 3-2 but clinched its 25th consecutive playoff appearance after Ottawa absolutely obliterated the Bruins with a 6-1 win. Today, it seemed like it was who wanted it less, and today, that team was Boston. If the Flyers get 1 point out their last two games, Boston clinches the final berth. If the Flyers get more than one point from both games, the Flyers are going to the playoffs. The Penguins and Flyers are facing off now as I type this post.

I'm sure "Staying Alive" is playing in the minds of Detroit fans as they made the postseason yet again. DET lost 3-2 at the Rangers, but Ottawa (a team with nothing to lose) just thrashed Boston 6-1. So add Detroit to the "in" list for this postseason.

As of this post, the battle for the Keystone State is tied at 1 between the Penguins at Flyers. Currently the 1st Intermission.

It was 1-1 after one period between Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, and the game ended up 3-1 in favor of Philadelphia. So the Stanley Cup Playoffs are set as Detroit and Philadelphia are the last ones to get in.

Elsewhere, several Western Conference teams will try to sweeten their offers as Division champs and Conference champs are to be determined. Those will be decided later tonight.

Keep an eye on the St. Louis/Washington game. If St. Louis fails to win the game, Dallas wins the Western Conference outright, regardless of the result of the Dallas game. St. Louis is losing 2-1 after one.

I mentioned DET at NYR, OTT at BOS, and PIT at PHI. Here are a few more Final games so far...

* It was 5-3 in Denver as the Anaheim Ducks took down the Colorado Avalanche.

* The Calgary Flames went into Minnesota and beat the Wild 2-1. Minnesota scored early in the third period, but Calgary pulled away with two unanswered goals.

* Chicago and Columbus couldn't settle their differences in sixty minutes and three periods, so Overtime was needed in Columbus. The Blackhawks fell 5-4 to the Blue Jackets.

* Original Six team Toronto were blasted 5-1 at the New Jersey Devils.

* It was the Florida Panthers who defended home ice nicely with a 5-2 win against the Carolina Panthers.

* While Florida won, how did the other Sunshine State team do? Well, Florida WON 5-2 at home, Tampa Bay LOST 5-2 at Montreal.

Those are some of the other Final games as of the time of this post. Scores up to this point:

* BUF at NYI (3-3; 3rd Period)
* NSH at DAL (2-2; 18:55 3rd Period)
* WAS at STL (4-1; WAS, 18:24 3rd Period)

Games on deck: WPG at LA, EDM at VAN, and ARI at SJ.

Congratulations to all winners up to and beyond the time of this post.

I'm on the cats bandwagon even though I have no idea what

- WAS at STL went final, 5-2 for the Caps, but they may have lost Oshie in the waning seconds of the game.
- NSH at DAL also went final, 3-2 for the Stars, who didn't have to do anything to lock up the conference's best record and the division. Jason Spezza knocks in a hat trick for Dallas's only goals.

I'm on the Rats bandwagon even though I have no idea what

Fixed that for you. ;)

Two games on tap today. These are the make up games due to the DC snow storm, and they have playoff implications on match ups:

PHI at NYI - 7:00pm EST
ANA at WAS - 7:30pm EST

Speaking of the Playoffs, here is what the first round would look like: (Likely Game 1 match ups listed)

Eastern Conference
- Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitols
- Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning
*Playoff match ups for the New York teams, Florida and Pittsburgh will be determined after today's games.

Western Conference
- Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars (A GTP Match up)
- Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues
*Playoff match ups for Nashville, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Anaheim will be determined after today's games.

Pavel Datsyuk is reportedly leaving the NHL after the playoffs because he is planning on going back to Russia to be with his family. One of the greatest players in the league is about to say goodbye to the NHL.

Edmonton Oilers rookie Connor McDavid averaged better than a point a game this season (1.07). He is the first player to have done so since Evgeni Malkin (1.09).

So the Islanders can choose who they play and the Rangers play the other team.

Before I continue, I just want to say that I am pleased to keep this thread buzzing and hyping up games all season long. I also enjoy making mention to you fine GTPlanet folks who like certain teams. I would like to wish all of you whose teams are in the playoffs well. I always say GTPlanet is like family to me, and you all are great brothers and sisters in my 12 years on here. I also love the spirit of some of you all here- changing your avatar to various NHL teams. Love the spirit!

Well, 30 teams had an equal chance to prove they are championship material. Sixteen succeeded, fourteen failed. Now is the time where the 16 contenders all compete among themselves to try to play for the beautiful and coveted Stanley Cup. Here are your matches in the First Round:

--- WESTERN CONFERENCE ---
* DAL Stars vs. MIN Wild
* STL Blues vs. CHI Blackhawks
* ANA Ducks vs. NSH Predators
* LA Kings vs. SJ Sharks

--- EASTERN CONFERENCE ---
* FLA Panthers vs. NYI Islanders
* TB Lightning vs. DET Red Wings
* WAS Capitals vs. PHI Flyers
* PIT Penguins vs. NYR Rangers

There are your matchups. I do make mention to the Wild a lot, and I'd be intrigued to see a Wild vs. Blackhawks match in the 2nd Round. The Wild would have a shot at closure after the brutal high stick MIN's C. Coyle took from CHI's Duncan Keith if we get a 2nd Round match with CHI and MIN. On the Eastern side, I'm mostly going to see if the Washington Capitals can really emerge and prove themselves as champs after having such a ballin' regular season.

The playoffs don't begin until Wednesday. So anyone want to pick some first round winners or maybe be bold enough to declare the team who'll win the Stanley Cup? Anyone want to make some calls right now? Tell it, GTPlanet!

And finally on a somber note, my thoughts and prayers go out in loving memory of Ed Snider and all whom have known and loved him. Congratulations to all whom made the playoffs; better luck next season to all who didn't make the postseason.

I think the saving grace the Red Wings have facing the Lightning is that they are a very depleted team. I think it'll be decided in 6, and I'm not going to call because I think it's a crapshoot at this point.

Though my friend from Minnesota will disagree, Dallas has the depth at forward, and with Tyler Seguin coming back from injury, we will be re-enforced at Center. That said, I think that the Wild will make an interesting case for being in the playoffs come Game One, however, I still think that Dallas will win the series, maybe by 5 games if they fail to win game 1.

That said here is the referees and linesmen for the post season:

I'm on the opposite side here. It's commonly said that "offense wins games, defense wins championships" and Minnesota has the Stars beat on the defensive side of the match up. We have 3 top 2 d-men and all of the d-men (with the possible exception of Nate Prosser) would easily be top 4 on any other team.

While we are rather weak at centre (our best is probably Mikko Koivu) we can go line to line with just about anyone and play with them. Our top line tends to be made up of Zach Praise-Mikael Granlund-Charlie Coyle and of thise Coyle is the one to watch out for. He's big at 6ft 3, 215lbs and fast and has some of the sweetest hands you'll ever see. He crashes the net, plays hard in the corners and can be a game breaker if he has to be. Zach Parise is the definition of a grinder. He's a bit smaller but will fight with the best and get to dirty areas. Coyle and Parise draw penalties like Edmonton draws 1st overall picks. Mikhael Granlund was supposed to ve our #1C of the future but hasn't really become it. He's smaller and a bit more slippery. When he needs to, he can light the jets.
Our 2nd line is normally made up of Jason Zucker-Mikko Koivu-Thomas Vanek. Zucker is as fast, if not faster than Granlund, and is the fastest peraon in the ice 99%of the time. Koivu is solid. There isn't much more to say about him. He does his job. Not fancy but gets it done. Vanek is Vanek. He doesn't try much if the time, but is still kne if the best snipers out there.
Our 3rd line is our impact line, made up of Nino Neiderrieter-Eric Haula-Jason Pomminville. They've caught fire recently and were scoring goals at will during the Wild's run to get to the playoffs. Nino is big as well at 6ft 2, 210. He's another silky smooth sniper and got the over time winner in game 7 against the Colorado Avalanche a few years ago so he scores big goals. Haula was a 7tj round pick by the Wild and will light it up in the next few years. He plays in the same style as Praise, going to the front of the net and creating havoc. Pomminville was snake bitten at the beginning of the season but has picked it up a bit. He can also score big goals when he has to. Expect to see thus lone matching against the North Star's top line a lot.
Line 4: Jarrett Stoll, Ryan Carter, Chris Porter, David Jones, Zach Dalpe, Kurtus Gabriel, Brett Bulmer, Tyler Graovac. Mix and match. All sligtly hard nosed. Carter, Gabriel, Bulmer will drop the gloves.
We can match Dallas in goaltending easily with Devan Dubnyk and Darcy Kuemper. They are solid. Not quite Holtby or Luango but they can both steal a game or 2 for us.

I'm going to have to pick the Wild in 6-7 because we will stifle Dallas's offense and keep their defense moving. The Stars have a defense that doesn't lokw having to move and can be exploited there, as well as goaltending that has been shaky throughout the season.

A few things I forgot to mention in my previous post... I do admit I've been watching a lot more hockey the past few years and became just a bit more educated on it. I enjoy seeing these games. In addition to my contributions, I want to thank people like Sanji Himura for adding extra buzz and insight to keep NHL fans here on GTP intrigued.

You know, I just realized something. The Minnesota vs. Dallas match is today's Minnesota... vs. OLD Minnesota- the artists formerly known as the Minnesota North Stars. So this is old Minnesota vs. new Minnesota. What kind of works against the Wild is their momentum. I think I read MIN has lost five straight. Dallas is going to be a tough out.

I have not done any brackets or anything, so I am not in any position to say I have any confidence in making any picks. So these picks I'm making are in the sense of, "if I had to choose..." Let's go.

* Got to love an inner-forum rivalry. My good mates RedDragon (and Northstar) and Sanji Himura will intently be checking out this series between the Wild and Stars. I'm thinking this one will go the distance as I SLIGHTLY favor Dallas more. I'm not counting the Wild at all, though.

* I like the Blues/Blackhawks matchup. It's going to be tough for the Blues to try to take down the Blackhawks, but I think it can be done.

* Between the Ducks and Predators, I'm going with the Ducks. This series will probably be decided in six at most.

* We are guaranteed a California team in the next round... but which? Is it the boys from L.A.? Or the fish from San José? I think I'm siding with the Kings. Five or six games.

Now for the East.

* I really like the Florida Panthers. So I'm taking Florida to sink the Islanders in maybe five games.

* Tampa Bay and Hockeytown. I want to choose Detroit, but I think Tampa Bay is a powerful team. The MoTown boys will still put up quite a fight. What else do you expect from a proven Original Six team like the Red Wings? This one could go the seven-game distance, but I think Detroit will have to step up more than ever.

* If the Capitals get ousted by the Flyers, this season will be a totally lost cause. So I'm sentimentally behind Washington here. Or let me say it like this- I am kind of pulling for Washington much like how I was pulling for someone finally winning the Triple Crown in horse racing like with American Pharaoh.

* The New York Rangers are a plenty tough team. Pittsburgh may go on some run, but I think the Rangers just have much more.

Again- I am not standing behind my picks with great confidence. I didn't fill out a bracket or anything. What about sleepers? For a West sleeper, I'll go with Anaheim. My East sleeper is Florida.

There you have some of my own predictions. You're welcome.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls... tonight begins the race for one of the most coveted prizes in all of American sports. 30 teams all had the same chance to play for one of sports' biggest prizes. 16 teams have proven themselves (or got lucky), and the other 14 have failed (including all Canadian NHL teams). That prize? This:

(source: www.thespnhl.com)

You see this thing? That's called the Stanley Cup, named for Lord Stanley. One of these sixteen teams will hoist this trophy at season's end. All your team has to do is win 16 games- four in each round of each best-of-7 series. Who will lift Lord Stanley's Cup and become champions of the 2015-2016 season? We'll find out as the games play themselves out.

It's time to start a new playoff season. Good luck and congratulations to all 16 teams playing for the Stanley Cup this season.
