Mike Babcock made his return to Detroit today as his Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against the Red Wings and new coach Jeff Blashill. Detroit beat Toronto 4-2. Wings and the Leafs will also open the season facing off one-another.

NHL Network right now is showing the Detroit Red Wings at the Toronto Maple Leafs. These two Original Six teams don't like each other all that much, separated by about 244 miles. It is currently scoreless with about 6:30 left in the 1st Period.

Raffi Torres of the San Jose Sharks got suspended 41 games for an illegal hit on Jakob Silfverberg of the Anaheim Ducks. The game played at Anaheim for their preseason match. A repeat offender is suspended for pretty much half the upcoming season! This is going to hurt the Sharks' lineup for sure.

I bet that San Jose was looking to dump him anyway. This is the perfect excuse to cut him without too much hit on the salary cap.

On a happier note, happy birthday today to two all-time greats: Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy!

It's a shame Torres has to play like that. He's actually a genuinely valuable hockey player and he doesn't need to be gooning it up all the time.

I heard that after that brutal hit he took from Raffi Torres, Anaheim's Jakob Silfverberg has recently been cleared to resume hockey activities. So that's certainly good news after that illegal head check he took. It is always great news knowing you can resume your livelihood even after something horrific.

Can you believe it, though? Less than 24 hours before the start of the 2015-2016 regular season! Almost time for everything from hard-hitting goal scoring to the occasional fights. And most important- these are all games that matter (except the All-Star Game)!

I'm really happy now that I have NBC Sports because it means that I get to watch a lot of Hockey this year. I'm hoping that the Red Wing's playoff streak continues, but as previously stated, I'm realistically expecting it to end this year.

"This is our season- we're going to win the Stanley Cup," says... all of the NHL teams. Lord Stanley's Cup is only made for one team. Only one team can win the championship. The race to play for the Stanley Cup will play itself out between now and some time in April.

Folks, the regular season is here! Four games rule the schedule on this Opening Night, including one banner-raising ceremony in Chicago. And here there are:
* MON Canadiens at TOR Maple Leafs
* NYR Rangers at CHI Blackhawks (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* VAN Canucks at CGY Flames
* SJ Sharks at LA Kings (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)

Let the journey begin.

Good luck to all of your teams this season.

Bettman getting booed during the Blackhawks banner raising ceremony was priceless.

The first regular season night of NHL hockey is wrapped up. Here are the results from Wednesday's four games:

* Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs: 3-1, Montreal Canadiens
* New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks: 3-2, New York Rangers
* Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames: 5-1, Vancouver Canucks
* San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings: 5-1, San Jose Sharks

Wow... every road team won. Just getting started! Plenty of season to go.

Blue just won! 3-1 over Oilers.

New guys scored the insurance goals! :)

The Wild just came out of nowhere to make the Avs-Wild game a slugfest.

As of this post, the game between the Arizona Coyotes at the Los Angeles Kings has yet to start. Meanwhile, here are finals from games that were played prior to this post...

* WPG Jets at NJ Devils: (3-1; Winnipeg Jets)
* NYR Rangers at COL Blue Jackets: (3-1; New York Jets)
* TOR Maple Leafs at DET Red Wings: (4-0; Detroit Red Wings)
* CHI Blackhawks at NYI Islanders: (3-2, OT; Chicago Blackhawks)

This weekend will be the first full weekend of regular season hockey. So go enjoy some NHL hockey this weekend. Congratulations to the eventual winner of ARI at LA.

Also... I'd like to get your opinions on 3-on-3 Overtime hockey after a few Overtimes have been played so far. Some people, like Adam Schein, loathe the 3-on-3 Overtime. Many others have praised it. But... what say you on the 3-on-3 Overtime format?

From what I've seen in the Tampa/Philly game the new OT method is pretty cool. It does seem like the teams with the fastest players will do better in it

The Minnesota Wild won 3-2 in their home opener against the St. Louis Blues. Despite being out-shot by the boys from STL by more than 10, Minnesota held serve at home to take down the Blues.

Same thing happened to the Red Wings last night except for the fact that Detroit was the Away team. Carolina badly outshot Detroit, but Detroit won 3-2.

Didn't get to see the game, but I heard Wild got 2 goals real quick that helped them get the win?

@RedDragon, congrats on the win.. and the undefeated season so far. :p

Quick rundown of Monday action...

Don't like Shootouts? Too bad! There was one in Anaheim. The Vancouver Canucks won 2-1 in a Shootout in Anaheim. Two games ended in 4-2 victories, both winning by the Home teams: New York Islanders defeat Winnipeg, and Buffalo defeat Columbus. Tampa Bay doubled up the Boston Bruins 6-3 in Boston. And- you can't win if you don't score. Only team that scored was Philadelphia at home 1-0 against the visiting Florida Panthers.

In mere moments on NBCSN, the Detroit Red Wings will host the Tampa Bay Lightning. We'll see how this one goes at The Joe. Correction- TB at DET is GO!!!

Detroit improves to 3-0 with a 3-1 win against Tampa Bay. The most surprising goal was what seemed like a hockey version of a half-court heave (or a full-court heave) to the empty net of Tampa Bay late. That goal was like a Hole in One or a long put for birdie or par in golf. Either way... the Detroit Red Wings are 3-0 and flying high so far.

[UPDATE] Forgot "win" in first sentence.

Vancouver beats the Kings 3-0 and improve to 3-0-1. Damn Canucks, getting my hopes up before the inevitable mid-season collapse.

One week of NHL action is done for. How do you like the season so far?

Need some entertainment in your life? The NHL can help you tonight with four games. See if these games will turn that frown upside down:

* OTT Senators at COL Blue Jackets
* CHI Blackhawks at PHI Flyers (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* BOS Bruins at COL Avalanche
* ARI Coyotes at ANA Ducks

Enjoy some Wednesday night NHL hockey, folks!

Nice to see Detroit win last night. They played way better than they did during the Canes game.

Annnnnnnd the Kings fall to 0-3-0 with only 2 goals scored this season. Probably headed to 0-4-0 with the Wild coming to LA.
