now cars in the family

according to my english dictionary "offence" is spelt with a C not S

exept offensive which has the S

but like i said "who cares"

An Australian English dictionary! Yeah, that'll be right then

:p
Oxford English Dictionary
offence Also *offense.

The action of attacking or taking the offensive; attack, assault, aggressive action. Sports & Games. The attacking team or players, the attack. N. Amer. etc
So you could use either. I would use a "c."

Back on topic, I was just going to bed when he said "10 minutes." I'm glad I never waited....

No offence.

When saying initial letters - as with M, X, F and others - you would naturally put an "an" before them because of the pronunciation of them. In reality, each letter has it's OWN spelling - M is em, X is ex, F is eff, and so on. Thus when typing it is perfectly acceptable - and in fact preferred - to use "an" before any letter which itself starts with a vowel.

I don't tend to criticise Americans for their insertions of "S" where it should be a "C" (offense/offence, defence/defense and so on), nor even their insertion of a "Z" where it should be an "S" (like in... criticise/criticize). It's easier to just make fun of them as a whole, really. :D

Still no EVO.

Oh so i was wrong on the M='em' thingy. OK.

BTW, my english is British style, colour not color, and realise not realize.

I noticed. And it's rather good - is it your second language? If so it's really, really good! :D

I forgot that the Americans drop perfectly good "U"s out of words. So really, I should have said "fsk yo, yo snt!". Marvellous.

The interesting thing to me is that "Americans" do **** - more people speak American English than any other dialect. Perhaps British folk need to catch up with the times.

That may be the case, but all the other dialects combined use c in offence, s in criticise and u in colour - as our Australian and Malaysian friends have shown us.

Assuming all of the US speaks English, which they don't (the thread originator, for example, speaks fluent bull****, but many Americans have Spanish as a first language, amongst others), that's still less than half of the total of English-as-a-first-language speakers. In fact English is the first language of more people than any other, except Chinese (and that's split up into it's own dialects too).

Still, live and let live, eh? As I said earlier:

Say what you will, I'm not arguing that; I typically use the "British" version of the language and I don't consider myself an American.

You don't think more people use American English than all other dialects put together?

I don't really know.

I'd guess that, with only a maximum of 273 million American-English speakers (or more importantly, writers :D), for the second most used primary language on the planet (by population - by area we get our arse kicked by the French), the combined forces of the other English-users would probably outweigh it. I don't have numbers to hand, but you're looking at 1.5 billion Chinese dialect speakers, and around 800 million English dialect speakers (for primary language).

And that's without adding those who have learned English as a second language. Japanese people tend to learn American-English as a second language (where they learn English as a second language) I'm told - this is reflected in the high American population in TEFL/JET participants. Many African countries' populations tend to learn English-English. And then there's the Australians (all 12 of them)...

But as I say, I'd only guess that there are more non-American-English English speakers than American-English English speakers... And after that last sentence, I think I'm losing my mind...

Yeah, it's all that Drift-bloke-with-the-broken-keyboard's fault. If he'd posted his "dad's car" then none of this would've happened.

Another sad, horrible case of thread hijacking due to boredom.

How did you spot that? I thought we were very careful in covering our tracks... *Note to self: Must try harder*

I have a feeling Drift-thingy won't be seen around again. Or if he is, it'll be accompanied by poorly-typed invective and an astonishing lack of common sense.

YAAAY. If it becomes true, we must rejoice.

I wonder if a moderator could change the name of this thread to "Idiot shoots his mouth off." That would be teh cool.

Actually I know 3 languages and some chinese dialects.

Most powerfull of 3 languages is English, followed by Malay(national language) and chinese.

Would like to learn some other language maybe spanish or german.
