Now I will buy an iPhone

I won't. It'll be eleventy-million pounds more expensive than it already is. I'll be holding onto my 3G for a bit longer, methinks.

HTC Desire FTW. :p

And I also agree on the price still being very high. But there's a fair amount of competition out there now so I don't know for sure. But Apple being Apple they will probably stick because of the fanbase iPhones have.

Oh that's not so bad then. Not that I'd pay £549 for a phone, but I'm sure there's a market.

What!! They're £549 in UK!!?? I bough a 3GS for my wife and paid the equivalent of £250 here in Sweden.

Already spoken to O2 and put my name in for the new phone. My contract ended few months ago so upgrade time.

So, it's 24% thinner... but it's bloody enormous!

So glad I skipped the 3GS. Time to compare.

Well, I wanted a new phone last year and waited for the 2009 WWDC to see what the 3GS turned out like. I was not impressed with the minor update so skipped it, to much mocking and laughter from people who paid their way out of their 3G contract to get a 3GS...go figure!

Turns out it was absolutely the right decision, because this new iPhone is simply stunning, hardly a fault with it. A 64GB version would have been nice, as would a MicroSD slot, but apart from that, wow!

HD video (and an iMovie app!), 5mp camera and that screen? Not to mention the sheer quality of the thing, and the way it looks.

I finally want one :D

Now all they have to do is make iTunes not suck. Imagine using iTunes for a photo workflow. :scared:

I personally was pretty underwhelmed with the news. The new camera and the higher resolution screen is pretty nice, and there really aren't any major faults with iOS4 and their App Store, but it still isn't enough to make me say "ZOMG I NEEDZ AT&T." They (Apple) are still saddled with such a terrible network for what is otherwise a pretty awesome piece of hardware, which is very unfortunate. That, and the data rates are absolutely atrocious. I'd say that if you have an iPhone 2G or 3G, it makes a lot of sense to go and make the jump. But, if you're running a 3GS, it probably isn't worth it.

Thing is, Android exists and its getting serious. The hardware for Android has been increasingly impressive, especially with the HTC Evo over on Sprint and the Nexus One at Verizon. I love me some WebOS, but with the acquisition of Palm by HP, who knows how long it will be until we see a Pre2.

TL;DR - Nice phone, Apple, but you're still on AT&T. I'll stick with Android on Sprint or Verizon, thanks.

iLike it ;)

I'm guessing there will be a new HTC out soon with Android though :D, if only I could justify the price of a smart phone :L

Seeing as this was all leaked by Engadget like a month ago it was quite an anti-climax. Its a nice bit of kit but I don't think much of the styling... its like something Sony Ericsson did 4 years ago! Its kinda lost its uniqueness without the tapered rear aluminium etc.

HTC seems be offering lots more functionality and they look way more attractive but I bet the iPhone is better built. If I was going to go Apple I would either hold out for the 4G iPod Touch version or the 2G iPad. I really don't need the phone function.

Oh and FaceTime sounds like a funny name to me, everytime I see it I think FacePalm!

Robin.

Bartenders can FaceTime behind bars.

Have you tried a Desire? It's one of the best quality handheld devices I've ever used. It's on par with an iPod touch, maybe even more so because it doesn't have a scratchable back (it's soft rubbery plastic). It feels like it's built like a brick. :p

Apple is really making me mad, it's like going out with a super model, only you are forced to take her disease ridden hooker friend along or it's no deal at all.

Why, oh why can't you get a deal with a decent carrier. Hell it gets even worse now that AT&T is getting rid of the uncapped plans.

G.T

No but I've used the HTC Legend, that phone is amazing. Great name, great construction (mono-block aluminium), huge screen and even an optical joystick! If I had the $ that would be the greatest contender along with the maybe the Xperia X10 in the phone dept but I'm happy with my K750i ;)

I do like the iPod music system / OS though, particularly coverflow. The only UI which supasses it in my opinion is the Zune HD's. I will have to see how the iPod Touch 4G turns out.

I like the analogy :sly:

I dont quite know the situation in the US but cant you guys get the phone sim free from the Apple store and stick whatever you want in it? Surely other carriers have 3G data plans? Or is it that its super expensive to get sim free. You would have thought after all this time it would be available on all networks.

Robin.

I follow the Apple info sites and forums quite a lot and it struck me that the reason Apple keeps the exclusivity deal with AT&T probably is that if they offered choice they would simply not be able to manufacture enough phones to meet demand.

Another thing. I read a lot about the HTC EVO, it seems like a very fine phone but, really, how much of a LTE network does Sprint have? When can you use it?

Edit:And I found the answer to the Sprint question which is: They don't have one.

They made a five-year deal with AT&T, starting in 2007. Over here in the EU, they had similar deals, but disappointing sales and local laws made them abandon the exclusivity deals. In most EU countries, simlocking is legal only for one contract term, so after the initial contract (e.g. you want to switch to a different provider), the store/manufacturer is legally bound to remove the simlock. (Unlike the US, where the five year deal between Apple and AT&T is forcing you to renew your contract with AT&T if you want to keep using the iPhone).

I find it kinda funny that Apple touts this 'amazing' screen as a 'retina display'. That doesn't mean anything, and it's not that high res compared to everything else out there.

Also video calling only over Wi-Fi and only to other iPhone4s is ridiculous, my k800i could Video call to anything over network 4 years ago.

It's probably a decent enough product, don't get me wrong, but it's just a 3GS with a nice screen.

...and HD video and a better camera (IIRC). Those are what sold me, my C905 is getting a bit slow and cumbersome now, and although the 8.1mp camera is great it's so slow to use it gets annoying.

I guess we're quite lucky in the UK in that our choice of carriers is small but they're good networks.

The iPhone cameras are still behind the comptition. The EVO has an 8MP that does 720P and has HDMI out, and the front facing camera on the EVO is 1.3MP.

And it is still an Apple product. Which means iTunes. And AT&T (in the US)

Not a lot of love for the new iPhone, that's great, means the line will Queue will be shorter for me.

The design, i agree is very non-apple, but have you seen the thiness? As for the rounded edges on my current iPhone, i hated them. Too slippery.
The processor in this thing is the biggest improvement, have any of you tried the iPad? The A4 processor is lightning.

I also concede that the initial video calling being limited to wifi is a bit of a pain, but in reality, its something we have to accept based on the current carriers, let the networks catch up and video calling will be over 3G, and you will be able to chat with other non-iphones once the network is up to scratch.
