New iPhone 4 looks great imo.... Would love to have it.... too bad I still got a year to go on my 3GS.... so lets see if the iPhone 4S comes out in that time period.. :p

I also concede that the initial video calling being limited to wifi is a bit of a pain, but in reality, its something we have to accept based on the current carriers, let the networks catch up and video calling will be over 3G, and you will be able to chat with other non-iphones once the network is up to scratch.

Yes, it was also my impression that this limitation had nothing to do with the phone itself but was carrier related.

Apparently the low cost of 199 seems a bargain but in actual fact its minimum bare bones plan will cost over a 1000 in the US!!! I suppose thats whats bad about lack of competition. Just take a look on the web for the story. I wonder what the sim free price will be in those countries that offer it.

Robin.

I'll be getting a black 32gb one in September for my birthday as long as I keep my wife happy until then, think I may have to cough up a bit towards it as I don't want an excessive contract! I just need to decide whether to go with O2 or Vodafone (Orange has rubbish coverage in my house).

I was all set to get one last year but the 3Gs wasn't a big enough improvement over the 3G so I held out on my god awful Sony Ericsson W660i for another year. Definitely worth the wait and the only thing I would have preferred would by a 64gb version, that’ll be something for the 3Gs upgraders to look forward to next year.

The iPhone cameras are still behind the comptition. The EVO has an 8MP that does 720P and has HDMI out, and the front facing camera on the EVO is 1.3MP.

And it is still an Apple product. Which means iTunes. And AT&T (in the US)

Of all people I would've thought you'd know that megapickles =/= quality. Plus this new sensor is back-illuminated so it should be pretty good for a phone, assuming the lens didn't come from a Holga or something. Then there's the variety of photography apps on the app-store - it's quite a tool for photography when you take it all into account.

Sorry, but no, it won't. It's $400 in the US.

Well my 3GS is up on ebay now. I wanted to see what the release date would be like before getting rid of my current phone. Though the iphone 4 is looking to be my choice I still am slightly reserved looking at the Nokia N8 and some of the phones by HTC.

Off topic but has HTC addressed their quality issues? I've had a touch diamond and a friend had another model and both weren't very well made. Also what is meant to be the newest out/coming out top of the line android?

True, my 2MP SE was better than my 3.2MP Sony, but only now getting a flash and a front camera, puh-lease.

The software for the iPhone is in my opinion the only thing going for it. Hardware-wise, I've rarely been impressed, and value for money, never.

Which is why I went for a dirt cheap Nokia 5800, which I've yet to find a problem with day-to-day compared to my friends' iPhones.

RE: front facing camera debate. The last phone I owned with one was a K800i a few years ago - ever since, manufacturers have been squeezing them out of their spec lists. Amusingly I bet they'll all start reappearing now, not because they're actually needed but simply because Apple have stuck one in the iPhone. And I bet video calling will take off again for the first time in about 6 years.

Seeing as this was all leaked by Engadget like a month ago it was quite an anti-climax. Its a nice bit of kit but I don't think much of the styling... its like something Sony Ericsson did 4 years ago! Its kinda lost its uniqueness without the tapered rear aluminium etc.

HTC seems be offering lots more functionality and they look way more attractive but I bet the iPhone is better built. If I was going to go Apple I would either hold out for the 4G iPod Touch version or the 2G iPad. I really don't need the phone function.

Oh and FaceTime sounds like a funny name to me, everytime I see it I think FacePalm!

Robin.

Totally agree, it's leaving me very very cold at the minute. Funnily enough, when Engadget posted up the shots back then I thought 'no way, Apple wouldn't sell something so bland.' Aaaaand here we are.

I find it kinda funny that Apple touts this 'amazing' screen as a 'retina display'.

They're calling it what? So when the screen is scratched half to hell, do I call up Apple and tell them it's developed a cataract?

If HDMI out from your phone is on your list of must-haves, I'm very concerned. That's nothing more than technology for the sake of technology and you know it.

Wow, alot of premium members like/dislike iphones !

Ive been wanting an iPhone for a while, been playing with gf's ipod touch and like the app store and simplicity, love the web browser (flash isnt a big deal for me for the websites i visit).

She has also just got a 16gb white 3GS and i really like it but apart from the phone functionality and camera its pretty much an ipod touch that can obv be used anywhere outwith a wifi zone. This is kind of a let down as i'd feel like i was using the same device if i got a 3GS.

For my next upgrade which is due at the end of June i was going to get the 32gb 3GS as i didnt know the iPhone 4 was on the cards !

So the release couldnt have came at a better time, definately going to upgrade to an iPhone 4 at the end of the month (providing vodafone get there hands on it the same time as o2 anyone know about this??).

The reason i pick the iphone over other mobiles is due to what you get with an apple ipod/iphone brand - connectivity is not only about the internet, bluetooth, wifi or itunes its about being able to buy other devices e.g. a hifi or a cd player for the car and being able to plug it straight in and play the library from your apple device through the system menus while it charges your ipod/iphone.

Its a universal system and theres no other brand with as much support from other devices.

The next reason is the apps and app store, its great with stuff for everyone to keep you entertained, alot of freebies too - dont know of any other phone with such a large app store or available applications for the device.

What im basically saying is - even although it might not be as great a phone as others, overall it offers way more than any other phone to my liking anyway.

Someone's going to come along and batter you for supporting proprietary hardware standards, but I totally agree. It just makes life easier when you can plug it into pretty much anything and have it charging away happily. As far as I'm concerned, if I didn't have an iPhone I'd have an iPod Touch anyway (in fact I did). This way I only have to carry one thing around.

I don't like the look now.. its not original anymore.. kinda looks like a thin and bigger and better version of my Sansa E250 with the Liquidmetal back and black front.

Um... $1,674.52 Mininium!

SE's 2MP camera modules were stellar, such amazing quality even today considering the rating. They really got the optics right in that era, the phones after didnt really show much improvement for years. Apple seem to be the only company who can make high mega pixel ratings look like utter trash!

Same here, I honestly thought there is no way Apple could produce something so generic (black phones with metal bands have been played out for years). I actually thought it looked like those fake iPhones. I wonder if this will be a new Apple design language with the 2G iPad looking the same. I guess Apple is going for the quality though with the 'high speed train' glass etc etc.

It was like with the NeXT 'MegaPixel' display (another Jobs creation), so much nonsence in these names!

"It can be argued that you can incur many of the below costs on any smartphone, but Apple’s designed the iPhone 4 to make it incredibly easy to spend money. In fact, Steve Job announced earlier today that iPhone app developers have earned over $1 billion selling apps so far. Guess who paid that, plus the more than half billion dollar share that Apple kept to itself? iPhone users like me who don’t think twice about a $.99 app here or there."

That is just dumb. Almost as dumb as The Telegraph's argument that you should not buy an iPhone 4 because iPhone OS 3 and below did not multitask. http://tinyurl.com/28ve2ay

So the argument is that Apple made the iPhone too user friendly and the AppStore too good, therefore people will spend too much money and time on buying Apps and surfing.

Bring it on :)

Just registered interest at vodafone as this is getting released on launch day - just hope they have plenty stock !

I watched the full iPhone part of WWDC and I must say this looks very impressive. I was slightly concerned when he announced iAds but after the demo showing how they are implemented I think they are a welcome addition if they really will keep developers making free apps.

What is apple's problem with multitasking? Even when angry mobs with pitchforks showed up demanding multitasking they still refuse to do it properly. Ok, the new iphone will have just enough multitasking to make most people happy, but why not do it right??

I'm still not big on the apple app control either. Android for me... soon... very soon.

I didn't even think there was a right or wrong way to do multitasking, it's either you can or you can't. I'm sure you mean on a much more technical level but as far as the average consumer is concerned being able to surf the web and listen to music at the same time is multitasking.

Hmm I wander what the new iTouch will look like. I've been using Nano's for the past 3 years but if the touch can get some useful features I guess it will be worth it. Agh it's such a hard choice.

Yea, the average user won't notice. But some users will probably bump into the limitations imposed by the heavy-handed feet-dragging way they implemented it. I'd just prefer they took it seriously and did it right. It's not so much the end product I'm concerned with as much as the attitude the company has.

Thats alot of money !!

If i can get the handset free with an upgrade and my tariff at the moment is £40 a month - (iphones are 2yr contracts) it will cost in total £960 over 2 yrs (providing i dont go above my tariff value on any given month).

That's so full of horse poo. ANY smart phone is going to cost thousands of dollars if you're retarded enough include the monthly bill with the phone.
What a stupid 🤬 article that's common sense. Know why? Because even my BB Storm costs around $2,000 to own & operate on a full plan.

Where as Sprint more or less has the cheapest plans on the market. And Android, which is vastly more open than the iPhone OS.

I still like the suggestion of calling it the iPad Nano since it has to be able to make calls to be a phone. (Anyone familiar with AT&T iPhone service should understand this)

I think that the iPhone 4 is actually quite un-apple like and they should come up with a more original design.
And Barryl, PLEASE change your avatar.... its quite disturbing.

So, it's 24% thinner... but it's bloody enormous!

That me laugh so hard, my boss came in. He had to laugh too.

I don't like apple (take their costumers for 4 year old) so no thanks for me, but the product was very good and thankfully to the iphone the whole smartphone thingy started commercialy

Nb barrels icon is hillarious. ctrl V

No but I've used the HTC Legend,

Two of my friends have HTCs, and I have got to say that I wasn't too impressed with the Legend. The HTC HD2, however, got the blood flowing. First I was kind of skeptical but after stealing it from his pocket to try it out (:p), I loved it!

Uh, yes... In the same way that it kinda looks like John Barrowman. Only flat and made of metal. And with iChat functionality.

ahhhhhh as much as i want this phone and will still probs get one, O2 will stop unlimited data in the UK from october 2010, that sucks
