Just got my iphone 4, 32gb black. Not having any antenna issues.

Huge step up compared to standard iphone 3g.

Very happy with it so far, only about 3 hours lol.

So I just got a black 16GB iPhone (3G). I never thought I'd get one (it's a present from my parents and the TomTom app should rule out needing to get a GPS). Is there anything I should change/add (esp. program and interface-wise) or otherwise be concerned about?

Make sure you have the lastest ios4 system software, adds a few more features to your handset.

Definately get the opera app, works very well in areas where the connection isn't very good.

Also get the ibook app, reading books was a lot better than i expected for such a small screen.

Theres also a great process called jailbreaking, but, its a very grey area thats probably best left to PM.

Only piece of advice I'd give is to 'reboot' it every couple of days if things start getting laggy. If you notice a considerable delay between you hitting the lock button and the clicking sound, for example. And get a hard case of some sort - it's very easy to drop it on its face and smash the screen into a million pieces. Oh and just in case you've got/get a bluetooth stereo in your car, don't expect it to stream music to it and navigate at the same time - it'll get horribly confused and just keel over.

Incidentally, 3 have just revealed their iPhone tariffs:

I'll take a 16GB on your cheapest plan, pleeease. I love having the network that everyone else mocks :D

Except how good is the network coverage (I haven't heard of anyone on 3 for ages) and how long is the contract (looks like it'd be 24 months).

Actually, how's 3 service-wise Jon? I'm tempted to pick one up from them, they're much better deals than Voda/O2/Orange.

They refuse to put the contract length on their site, so I'm guessing 24 month.

As for coverage, I've never had any issues with my current one on 3. In fact I'd say it's a rarity that anything other than '3G' is sitting at the top of my phone with 3 bars or more. I live in a high signal area, mind.

EDIT

According to CNET it is indeed 24 month.

Is that 3 plan per month? Is it even possible to send 5000 text messages in a month without your thumbs falling off?

just got a shiny new iPhone 4 not had much play time yet still syncing everything. will post back soon with more info.

Fail on 3's part if that is true. What I don't get is how they can offer the 32GB 3GS for the same up-front cost as the 8GB 3GS.

Well, before today you could actually score an iPhone off Three if you were at the end of your contract and threatened to leave. Except they weren't official UK iPhones - they were actually ones from Italy (where they're the official carrier, I believe), so my guess is that they're trying to shift the remainder they have at a reduced price. Particularly as Apple aren't making 3GSes in that colour or size anymore.

Or they've made a mistake, which is also fairly likely.

Ok so I'm just waiting for Orange to activate the SIM on their side so I can use as phone fully but just to say its feels a little strange in the hand compared to the 3G and also feels more compact and solid. just need to see how it performs as a phone but overall its great, im just getting iMovie for it.

here are some pis with my 3G and iPad.

A few of my friends have posted this article on Facebook regarding a problem with the iPhone.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/jun/24/iphone-reception-problems-bottom-edge

Mmm, I'm not too worried though - apparently the problem goes away if there's something between you and the metal bits (like a case). And believe me, if I'm carrying around a £500 phone it's going in a case. There's supposed to be a yellow screen issue too, but apparently that resolves its self within a few hours of use (something about glue evaporating).

Still a bit disappointed they didn't spot the issue earlier, though.

ok guys well I've struck my first problem, the phone is displaying No Sim and after googleing it, this seems to be either a Sim fault or worse a Hardware fault, I'm just hoping its sim related so I can replace it tomorrow.

Maybe the Japanese are right about 4 being bad luck.

@Sprite

What are your thoughts about the screen on the new one compared to the 3G

Edit: Grammar question. Is it "thoughts of" or "thoughts about"?

It's got a LOT better lately. I was in Wales recently and 2 years ago in the same place the only phone I could get reception with was a Vodafone one. Now, my 3 phone gets a full 3G signal there and it never drops! Infact, I now rarely go anywhere where I can't get 3G coverage and I've always got full bars.

Either 'thoughts about' or 'thoughts on' are applicable there 👍

Ditto. I've had to venture into literally the middle of nowhere to lose my 3G signal.

There is definatly a difference with the sceen. For example the resolution helps with small details like the small letters on the side of the address book icon, they are easy to read and not small splodges. It's very crisp and natural looking in the photos. But I think Apple and reviewers are exagerating it all a bit too much, it's a step up but not a leap as they try and tell us.

Interesting.

I'm still waiting for Virgin Mobile/T-mobile network to merge with the Orange network. Currently Virgin Mobile is terrible :grumpy:

02/Tesco is by far the best, but 02 is pretty expensive.

Day 2 with my iphone 4; still no issues.

Battery improvement is very significant, makes a huge difference to my usage. I'm no longer thinking, will watching half an hour of video kill my battery.

The wifi reception seems dramatically improved. Compared to my iphone 3g, and my panasonic toughbook, i'm seeing an additional 2 networks i never knew existed.

The screen is as big a step up as they quote, unfortunately, most apps haven't been updated to make use of it. The most obvious place is looking at app logos, the icons that have been updated are a huge step up from the ones that haven't.

The camera is pretty good, although i would prefare if they would bring out some form of image stabilisation, it needs it.

Build quality: Perfect so far. Really does feel a lot more classy and well built than any other phone.

So problem solved with the SIM issue. Decided to go back to the Orange store and they tested their SIM from the store iPhone and the phone picked it up, spoke to customer service and they confirmed the faulty SIM so they are sending a new one, thank god it isn't a faulty phone.

So Apple released a huge press statement on the antenna problem:

Don't hold it that way.

What?
