PS. Kylehnat, bud I'm sure your car is fantastic, but the chassis rails on a Semi are enormous. 2 steel girders, ranging roughly 4" x 10" run the length of those trucks. Flexing them, is something to behold.

Yeah, but that's because the sled has a lot of friction from launch and it only gets heavier as the weight comes forward. These things are pulling ballasted regular cargo trailers, which have very little rolling resistance. That makes a huge difference. Anything that can snatch one tire two feet + off the pavement from inertial resistance alone would have no trouble keeping it off the ground if it was pulling a resisting load.

actually, BD would cause more oxides of nitrogen but less greenhouse CO2. so in reality a truck running biodiesel would probably produce more black smoke but less greenhouse gas normally associated with I.C. exhaust

well i can say this much though those engines from what i remember may produce like 300 hp but make 1,500 ft lbs of torque i worked in a semi detail shop for a while, dad was a trucker so was my brother in law so i have an appreciation for these goliaths as well

Semi tractors just use an average low-tech open-C channel frame about the size Matt said. It's massive but extremely flexible (relatively). They want it to flex, because with all the forces put upon it, like that torque and shocks from loading a trailer and whatnot, if the frame was fully boxed, a la F150, it would twist and stay twisted if it didn't just break apart.

These days they are more powerful though I've seen cummins engines up to 600 hp and 1850 lb-ft. Now that is beautiful power Believe it or not when truck like that has no trailer it just might be faster of the line then some slow car. And I mean start with like 3rd gear not 1st.
