Hiya,

When under braking and gear changing, a number appears next to the gear display (i think it might only be in first person camera). E.g. +3 or -2. What is this?

Much Thanks

Andy

That is the suggested gear you should be in at that time/corner.

It's off in a number of places, and to be honest is usually completely ignored. What the game suggests and what can be done are quite varied.

its helpful if you have no idea at all, but if your trying to be fast, totally ignore it

this suggested gear is very inaccurate. Just ignore it. It's usefull only for a first lap or two ... but then not anymore.

if you don't know what you're doing, like me, it's actually pretty useful. and it's good to start off with, as it teaches you how fast you can be around a track, then give you a basis to improve on. eventually you will get so good that you can go around most corners at least one gear higher than the suggested. for example, the twistys on apricot hill it suggests second, i can go through them almost at the top of 3rd gear

also, the number comes up, then it starts blinking. you should start braking when it starts blinking, that's how i do it anyway

Like I said, it's usefull for start, but don't get used to it too much, cause it's slow. And braking at blinking is OK sometimes, but often it's too soon.

Too soon?

These numbers and "blinking" are crap. The "thing" thinks I have to brake a half a year earlier then I used to.Just ignore it and drive like your own style 👍

Cheers,

BTW: The Search button can be very helpfull to 👍

Real funny thing happened was during the Pro Tubo Race at Test Course, I was driving the Mazda 787 and told me to shift down to 2 gear while I was going 215!

Every car has different gear ratios so i cant believe they would be accurate unless a different set of gear reminders are loaded for each different car!

In a ford GT it once told me i should be in 2nd half way down the back straight at Tsukuba (excuse spelling if it's wrong) on GT:P! So it must be crap!

Thanks for the help on this matter anyway guys! 👍 :)

Sometimes the "blinking" i use as a braking point, but there are many corners where it's way too early, e.g. before the right-hander into a tunnel on Midfield. I also find it impossbily late for the final chicane at SS11 - i always brake much earlier and flick the car left-right-left. Might just be me thought. SS5 - can get thru a 2nd gear corner in 4th most of the time. It is a guide, and very useful as its easier to learn when to ignore it and when not to, rather than trying to find something to use as a braking point. Counting trees is not recommended :scared: :ouch:

Interestingly enough, I find the suggested gears do change not only according to your car, but also tire wear. When on blue or bright red tyres, it normally suggests a gear lower for the corner than when you have green/yellow tyres, to account for the loss of grip. I think that flashing gear indicator, including braking points, is basically GT computing the course for your car as if it were driving it, then giving you the data. Hence why you can be quicker in many places.

I didn't know what they were until I read this yesterday ...so I experimented with it and found it works perfect (for auto transmission atleast) see the # shows up and thats the gear to be in for the turn...but not at the moment it shows up, when it blinks is when (for automatic) you hit the breaks until you get to the gear it says and you can take every turn perfectly..

that definately helped me to win on the turny tracks in my high power viper... it's so simple... just be in that gear when you enter the turn and you wont spin out and you will take the turn perfectly..

so I remember if I see blinking slow down to that gear and I hardly ever fly off the track now

In fact, it does do that. Plus it monitors the condition of your power and tires. If you pay attention, you'll notice that it changes the suggested gears if you adjust the power level, transmission, or tires - certainly as the tires wear out, it will make different gear suggestions.

It doesn't tell you when to shift. It tells you what gear you'll want to be in for the upcoming turn... so yes, halfway down the straight it was preparing you for the next turn.

It's not perfect, and you can definitely improve on it with practice. But if you drive a 1000-hp Skyline or Viper and win races by flying down the straights, banging off the wall, and flying down the next straight, following the suggestions will help you actually learn how to drive.

People DO that?!? (:

Yes, the gear indicator is actually far more complex than people give it credit for. The only thing it doesn't take into account are other cars on the track and your possision / direction / "line" on the track. It calculates speed, power, tire condition, and gear ratios if you were solo on the best line. And even then it has a little looseness to its accuracy.

Apparently they do ;).

Still, I don't think it's so great. It just disturbs. I have some friends, who drove GT3 for the first time ever and I've been watching them drive. Those suggestions didn't help :).

Yeh! I agree with whats been said! Thanks! But it is annoying though! Any of you know if its in GT4 (i would of got it on the day but amazon are cr#p???

A tighter version of it appeared in GT4P, so no doubt it'll show up in GT4. I did notice that in Prologue, the number was blinking almost immediately, so you had to hit the brakes as soon as it came up. Not true with the Woodone Supra, which has stupidly good brakes. :) I hope its in GT4.... as i said, trying to pick actual braking points is quite difficult.
