Online is a frustrating experience

I love one of the lobby systems that is featured in Forza 3; The Cycled Production Hopper. Basically, for those that don't know what this is, the races are about 10 minutes long, random track and car, but everyone only has the choice of stock version of that car (for example, if the Ferrari California came up, you can only choose a stock California, no upgrades or tunes allowed, only paint colours). These lobbies really have lots of fun racing, free from the multitude of idiots that fill other lobbies.

This would be a perfect option for GT5.

I've only tried the online a few times. The first time, since the races all seemed to be unlimited, everyone drove 800+ hp cars. That's nice once in a while, but I really don't get a lot of joy out of it. Didn't last long anyway, the guy hosting the race decided he wanted to change the number of laps so he booted us all off the server after half a lap. So the next time I went online, I found a lobby with a horsepower restriction, but it was just two guys drifting. I tried another race with a horsepower limit - I was greeted with the noise of some guy rubbing his microphone back and forth across...I don't want to know what. So I decided to do a practice lap before the race began. As soon as I exited the pits, the rubbing noise stopped and the guy said "Who the hell just teleported in here?" Then a couple seconds later I got a "disconnected from server" message.

👎

What's wrong with just letting you choose what sort of performance level you want, maybe choose from a selection of tracks you'd like to race on, and matching you up with a race that's going to start soon? This lobby system is just crap.

I get constantly good races, but the first thing when i search a room is i put the skid recovery on off, and then look for a good title.

Like yesterday the room FULL REAL, was awesome, i got 15 + races with awesome fights and good stuff! Full damage definately did the trick there!👍

No doubt I have met 5 new friends in the lobbies. I race with my S2000 300hp class S tires and have had a hell of a time. It is so cool to practice the track before the race starts, and watch races. I am glad there is no PP BTW.

I don't think the PP system would work in GT5 tbh. There's too many cars to balance and you'd end up with overpowered cars that people will exploit

No. PP fixes this. Right now in online, a Corvette and a race suspension, full tune transmission, aeropackage, race clutch Corvette are equal. They would not be with PP.

I have just spent around an hour and a half online and have failed despite maybe 20+ attempts to compete in any sort of race whatsoever, it's not an uncommon experience for me. It is not down to connection issues - apart from the occasional incompatibility ones - the problem comes from both a design and a user etiquette perspective.

I had a rally car I wanted to try out and was happy to race one any of the smaller courses. I spot plenty of rooms that look fine to try but by the time I enter, they (slowly) load up and once I can access regulations I see that for a multitude of reasons I cannot use my chosen car. These reasons can be specific car selected, bhp limits etc. and of course the room host at that point has the right to set whatever he likes as his criteria, you just get no indication of this before you enter a room frustratingly as the only information you have there are NORMAL RACE and the virtually pointless RACE QUALITY. Often you will go in a room while a race is ongoing, wait patiently for it to finish as only then can you access regulations and then find out you do not qualify. A lot of time can be lost.

Even more frustrating is poor host etiquette. You get in a room, your criteria is fine, the Event Status says Free Run and Race but the host never actually starts a race, he can be messing about drifting, chatting to his mates, whatever. You comment in the room asking when the race will start and get no reply. This goes on until you eventually get really annoyed and leave. This happened a dozen times or so tonight. Surely if the room status is set to Free Run and Race then the rest of the room can force a race start after a certain amount of time? Again, this would be helpful if it is indicated on the room summary before you enter in the first place, perhaps the amount of time since the last race finished if one is currently not ongoing. Another big loss of time.

Final issue I experienced a few times tonight was getting kicked for no valid reason. I went in several rooms and was kicked out, the one regular factor in these seemed to be that everyone in that room was of a certain nationality and I was not of the same. Now, if someone wants to set up a nationality filter on room creation that no-one from another country can enter, well I still think that's not a good thing but it would at least save you entering, loading up, setting up your car and then getting kicked. Again, a lot of time wasted. I think perhaps you should have more than one person needed to kick someone too, I was kicked by this Spanish git last night after beating him in a hotly contested race, his last action being trying to plough into me but missing and ending up in a fence. Kicking me was done in a fit of pique which is not a good reason.

So yes, an annoying evening and these are all issues that I think are much more important to sort than implementing mechanical damage. I yearn for the simplicity of Prologue online at the moment.

Best thing to do is Tweet it to Kaz and hopefully he will see this for himself and make improvements in an update. I hate it too because we all love to race and that is what we all have bought the game for.

I remember joining a room and I overheard two friends saying "How do we stop others from joining the room", even had some screaming my name to leave repeatedly so it is annoying when others are just not freindly. There are too many individuals who think that they are above the rest when all we want to do is compete and show who has the Skill/Talent to race in the best rooms with the best Drivers/Racers. We all wanted to have private rooms and now we have it just does not seem to work in the way we want it. Given time hopefully all these issues will be refined and made more RACE ACCESSIBLE.

And what's stopping you from making your own room and Hosting it online for the rest of the world?

I personally haven't found issue with getting quality people to race with. I will concur that I would like to see the specs of the room without having to enter it.

PS....drift rooms are usually labeled "DRIFT", so why would you go into a room with that title, expecting to see a race? Or vice versa...come on people use your brain.

I got about 40 friends online playing GT, so it's not much of a problem to get a clean race together. Had some great races this week with timeattack, tony1311, SolarSystem, GTRP and IRT members and we never had problems finding each other.
So I think the online sistem is just fine we just have to get used to IMO.

Agree with pretty much everything being said here. Astonishing that the online is so broken at the moment, you wouldn't think it would be that hard to get right.

I jumped in someone's room the other night to race some karts - there was about 5 of us in there and it was a blast until it filled up and some d-bag decided it'd be funnny to go the wrong way. A kid I'm sure, obviously hasn't been spanked enough...

Anyway, feel free to add me to your friends list - I'm not awesome, but I promise to not intentionally wreck people and be an asshat.

And what's stopping you from making your own room and Hosting it online for the rest of the world?

I do but either

A) No one joins
B) No one wants to actually race or
C) People who do join leave instantly because I've set the power to 700hp, tyres to sport softs and disabled all the driver aids.

Where are all the good drivers who appreciate close racing?

No. PP fixes this. Right now in online, a Corvette and a race suspension, full tune transmission, aeropackage, race clutch Corvette are equal. They would not be with PP.

It's a mammoth job to work out a PP system for 1000 cars.

Doesn't GT5 have some selected events like GT5P?

It's great that GT5 has some kind kind of public and private rooms but they really need a bunch of predetermined races quick match style.

If you want some decent racers you need to check the online section on this site and maybe even wait a few weeks while people play the single player portion out.

I agree that the menus and structure are poor. The whole games menu is just horrible.

i've never raced online before and i want to join in with serious online racers, doubt i will try after reading some of the horror stories on offer here.

They need to implement matchmaking where you earn credit and XP online, all they got now is just a bunch of casual open lobbies

Yeah casual is the keyword here. GT5 is for casual players.

Plain and simple, if you want to tune your car go to Practice mode or arcade and Tune your car. If you tune your car while Online your settings will not be saved when you go Offline. I try to have selected cars for Online mode that are already set for the track I want to race online with, it would then be a simple horsepower or tyre change that i would need to make. It's a pain when I go to NurburgNord and I see the horsepower set at 200 or 500 bhp on sports tyres......thats not for me as I like to race at high speed because I compete with myself always to beat my prevoius lap times but I will give it a go only if there is a race the will commence after a few practice laps.

I don't know. I guess I had a good experience. I've only been on once, last night, and it was through a listing I found on the online portion of this website. It was a ton of fun.

A couple of suggestions I would have to improve online:

1) A lot of sports games let you create online leagues, where a host or whatever, can implement their own rules, regulations, schedules, etc... I think this would work great for GT5.

2) More filter options. Maybe a way to restrict who can enter a lobby by the specific license they've passed.

3) Leaderboards, and stats, obviously...

I'm sure there are more...

So many punters :/ but you know I quite enjoy it when punters fail to ram me off the road and end up crashing themselves.

This is epic facepalm stuff. Online gaming in general has been so well developed over the years that it's virtually a science now, with a formula - X+Y+Z = awesome. GT series has a lot going for it, I've loved it for years but Kaz really does seem to have his head in a bubble.

Dear Kaz, look around you man - You've got the netcode cracked, that's the difficult bit. Look at forza, look at NFS, look at burnout and F1. Hell, look at GTA - this is how you do the online part of your game. Not some weird thing you dreamed up in your head about removing any cool bits of the utterly appalling Prologue online experience and replacing them with idiocy.

Here's an idea - look at any game released in the last 10 years and just plain copy their online menu system. Doesn't even have to be a driving game, World of Warcraft will do.

There's things you need to put in there. Basic essentials, server info, stats, lobbys. It's not rocket science it just requires a rectal head extraction procedure!

PS: while you're at it fix the single player menus - we need a link to home, garage and tune shop on each and every panel

This is why i stopped playing gt5p online, especially with the penalty system + daytona that tight infield turn 80% of the time i would just get hammered from behind punted off the track across the field into a wall and got a penalty while they probably got a penalty but were on the track and home free in that slow section, where i had to cross grass to even back to the road.

Now i know stuff happens someone brakes early for traffic, someone over shoots their braking point taps and whatnot happen, but ramming full speed into the back of someone into a tight turn should be auto ban cause that is no accident.

Those on here who want serious, decent online races, please add my PSN 'markbrier'

I usually impose limits and prohibit most aids. I'm just looking for good, honest races!

I like the idea of being stricter about stopping stupid people enetering serious rooms, but it had BETTER NOT be put in as a Online XP thing. Please. I had a race last night entitled IRT GTRP ... and something else... There were TWO neverseen people. 9 and 13. We had lots of good races, there were ten of us, and i only managed a gold at a Le Mans night race. Against some LM gt1 esque cars and a ZR1 RM. I had a NASCAR! Time was set to 21:30 and i could see NOTHING down Musanne. I had no aids and no map, but i won anyway!!!

I have not yet ventured into the public races but have ran a few private ones with my friends. The biggest issues I see at this point are the end of race timer needs to be adjustable and we need more options for car restrictions. Would be nice to have the ability to limit the amount of downforce allowed in a given race as well.

This will sound dumb. How do I find these public races? I haven't a clue sorry.

Edit* when I create a lounge does that appear to everyone else?
I did find a list of public lounges once but I can't seem to remember how I found them lol.

The open lobby icon on the GT Life main page just left of A-Spec

Thanks Roady.

Exactly.

Its a continual 'exhibition mode', its meaningless and the racing and general attitude reflect that.

I don't understand why there is no online level / ladder / ranking, you have that in basically every game now.

They should only allow to earn credits/ experience whit the pp system and defined events createed by PD, if they allow to earn credits by user created lobbys the will be exploited

I've just been clipped on a straight by a much faster car. He slowed down, caught my rear: I've had the crash penalty and the mechanical damage. :(

This is always going to be a problem with deciding who's fault it was... even IRL with real people judging it's not always doable let alone with a computer trying to decide off arbitrary rules about collinsion direction and speed...

i didn't mean to complain about GT5 though. I'm complaining about some not so very nice people who think it's funny to try to make other people crash and break their car.

All the people complaining in here, here's a thought, exchange PSN ID's and you all try to race together. I swear some times the answer is staring you right in the face, but you just aren't looking at it well enough to see it.

Not sure if in a race with good drivers why you would need crash penalties, they are too arbitrary to be of any use. No matter what rules they implement, online lobbies will always have it's share of idiots. That's just how some people are, deal with it. Get a mic and then talk to the other racers to get a feel for them, hence why I like the free run thing, you can just talk and drive around taking note of the individuals in the room. Perhaps find racing buddies that you can count on for good races when you decide to host your own room. It was and still is a toss up in FM3 online to find a room of good drivers, even if their rank was high didn't mean that you would get a fair race either. It's not all about numbers anymore, it's about social stuff. Mics are necessary in this game's online experience.

PD needs to hurry up and turn on credits and xp for wins, as it was stated in my manual. I'm about to put that as my sig.
