Online racing a failure?

Am I the only one in here that thinks online racing is a failure? I think there are several things that makes this racing experience terrible:

*People can't set limits and races are open for any car
*Disconnections and sudden freezes on loading screens
*Laaaaaaag - !!! Makes it impossible to race properly
*Too much depends on the host

It annoys me that I am not able to race online as that has always been my first-priority in all other racing games. I just finished a race 10 minutes ago and then a 5 min loading screen... !!!

Instead of this "Dictating Host" system I would have loved to see something similar to what was used in Racedriver GRID, but with a much bigger selection of events and cars to choose from as well as more tracks in each event.

Anyone else share the same feeling?

I do think it is a bit of a failure. It only seems to work if you have a ten second lead on every one else. Others you get shunted from behind or someone will skid into the side of you and push you wide, hence giving you a shortcut penalty. I do enjoy A Spec races more, I just did 5 laps at the beginning of the Suzuka Endurance (can't decide on a car) and I had some great racing with other cars for those 5 laps with no contact!

I also hate how people seem to slide from one side of the track to the other side of the track but they are still going to quick for you to catch up. All stupid things like that.

Im really mad about the online races not having enough restrictions.
Yesterday i made a drift lobby, And i had to stop drifting every 2 minutes to kick some assholes in a pagani zonda r's, murcielago's or veyrons....
I really wish i could ban some people from my lobby's.

I'm sure there are power, weight and tyre limitation options available..??

If, you don't like the host, then leave the room or host your own room..

And, yes, I do agree that online racing isn't as good as what it COULD be, but it's early days yet.

Who know's, in the future online catergories like there was in GT5P might be introduced..?? i.e 650 , 700, 750, 800pp

This would help to create an easy and more level performance ability of cars.

I think it's a bit too early to make a fully accurate decision, personally, as many of my friends are concentrating on completing, or advancing, A and B spec levels.

Online racing isn't the main priority for some people at the moment, whereas in 3 / 6 / 9 months time, more people would be finished with A and B Spec and the online racing will really start hotting up.

More people online will create a greater variety of rooms, and racing, to choose from.

Alternatively, like I say, in the meantime you could start or host something yourself..

I don't mean that the regulations aren't available, what I mean is of course that the hosts are too *****g st***d to set those limits. I have tried this several times:

bombe32: Can't you set tyre regulations?
Host: Why? Racing softs are the best!

AND
Why wait 3 months? A lot of people are already passing level 30 and when you hit that level there is absolutely nothing to do afterwards. **** B-spec, I want to race. No way am I going to race for 9 hours straight. No way am I going to race the same stupid AI again in the same events from which I earn nothing at all.
Give me some real racing whenever I want!

Why don't you set up your own room with desired regulations?

Than be patient and wait for similar-minded drivers to join.

After some time (few days/weeks), you should have a nice group of people that love to race in similar regulations.

In the meantime, let PD finish their work in expanding the game.

Yep, I just set up a room and wait for maybe 2 hours for someone to join. That sounds good to me...

It's not like I'm mad or something, but I feel that PD could have learned how to make an online racing game if they just wanted to. Relying on people to be able to make the best racing regulations -...

Yes, yes and yes!

here's a thought
maybe you could race in " my lounge " with your friends
if you have any

Here's a thought:
Why don't you go and race your friends instead of this?

How are you supposed to meet others with equal level of driving unless you go online and find them? Jeez.

Nothing depends on the host because the lobbies are not held on your PS3, they are held by Sony/PD on thier servers. If it was down to your connection i would NEVER be able to join a friends room as he has THE worst Net connection of anyone i know, hes lucky if he gets 1mb/s.

The rest of it you can customize and you can report users who continually disobey the rules.

I regularly kick people for swearing and driving like Hammond in the drag car, ie badly.

I spent 6 hours last night having a great time on the Nordshliefe with a full grid, it was just a free run all night but it was great, everyone was respectfull and if you got bumped off the guy who bumped you would slow down to let you past again.

If you want some clean online racing i usually have a room set up, GTP TMN Racing, take a look but dont give up on it.

Sure sure ... Give PD even longer to perfect this game ... They did rush this game out to begin with so lets be patient with them.

I think online racing is something that will never work as there are always those people who have to win regardless, plus I think it's a p**s take the stupid amount of XP you get when you eventually do fight through the field of deliberate crashes to win.

The online racing is not bad at all. Sure it depends on the host and that is how it should be. If you do not like the way the host runs the lobby then find another lobby or create your own open lobby and set the rules the way you want.

We do need more options to restrict the races such as country or region of car, make, model, year range, type of car so we can set a lobby to Nascar only or Super GT or DTM, Tuner, Production, or perhaps a German car only or coupe only and so on.

Another thing that would help a lot is an option to make cars turn into ghosts when they drive like idiots parking in the middle of the track or driving the wrong way.

I find joining a room with the most regulations is the best way to find a good race , just hold the cursor over the name and it shows what restrictions are on, avoid rooms with skid recovery on, or join a room hosted by GTP_someone.

Look for a decent racing club that doesn't make you change your gamertag and which lets you come and go as you please.

I'd recommend WorldLeagueRacing (though I would say that), but there are plenty more out there. It's a good way to race with serious racers of all abilities and to get a good friends list going.

The problem with online is poor matchmaking. That we have to come to a place like this, and gather people together in a slow, painstaking way, just to get a quick race together without a bunch of yahoos, is INSANE...!

The online game needs to offer Spec cars, so that matched racing is guaranteed. At the moment, you have FAR too wide a choice of cars, upgrade levels (don't forget, there's no way to downgrade a car that you have upgraded, so that it can fit in with a lobby creator - whatever happened to that from GT5p, BTW?) and the like for an easy race to take place.

I have NO idea why the Arcade Cars aren't simply made available as a choice for the Lobby creator to pick from. Some of those are tuned pretty well, and at least everybody drives the same thing... Spec racing, even in Yaris's can be a real fun time.

The next epic fail is the game's inability to figure out if a car is knocked off the track or DRIVEN off the track. Somebody punts you off, YOU shouldn't be the one paying the penalty. Any game with an elaborate damage system, well, it's obvious that the game IS capable of telling where and how hard any contact is made. The game uses that data to calculate the visual damage shown and mechanical penalties. Same data could EASILY let the game know if you were knocked off the track or went of your own accord! Same with shunts from behind, or fender rubbing. The game KNOWS how hard each of them are. Certain License Tests, the game is VERY finicky about contact. Anything above a certain level, DSQ! But ONLY above a certain level. Shows me, at least, that the game has this type of data available.

They simply choose not to use it.

Lobbies... The HELL with what the creator wants to call it! Most of them are idiots that just want to 'represent', anyway... Lobby name should be car, track, laps. And what the Lobby Creator wants to call it should be the fine print! Too many Lobbies say one thing outside, and inside it is something else altogether.

Track 'camping' is the EASIEST thing for a game to self-police (it shouldn't be the Host's job to kick morons if the game can detect them by itself). Don't keep up at least a minimum speed around the track? Automatic boot! How hard would THAT be to implement? Several other games, you drive backwards, you are either booted or turned around. Me, I give booted the vote!

Real racing has stewards. The racers aren't asked to police themselves. Especially online, the game needs to be the adult! Just put it in as options, so the idiots can have somewhere to play Mario Kart. Give Lobbies without policing rules a nice 'Hello Kitty' color scheme, so the rest of us can avoid them like the plague..!

Personally, I'd like to tie Kaz to a Playseat, and MAKE him play random games online for a day or so. Bet your sweet bippee online would get better a LOT faster than the current pace! In fact, it's a pet theory of mine that Kaz has NEVER played the game the same way we HAVE to. He's got a Garage of 1000 cars that he never had to grind for. He's never done a 4hr Endurance race and been rewarded with a POS concept car he wouldn't even drive down the street in! And he's never had to endure some idiot camping around a blind corner just for the FUN that is messing with the target user of the game.

Somebody needs to lock him in a room with a brand new PS3, a wheel and a new copy of GT5. And then make him endure the horror that his child has turned into...

Bet you he couldn't stand it, either!

Not totally true. You can not undo Stage 1-3 Engine tweaks nor weight reduction or reinforcement. You can undo everything else so if you are careful and pay attention you can upgrade a car and take it back down again as needed. You can not upgrade a production car all the way and then take it all the way back to stock but you can reduce it a good bit by putting stock exhaust intake and turbo parts back on at any time.

The host has too much power should all be a vote imho, at the moment they have power to set the rules to suit themselves and kick you if you are winning or richer or have better cars and crash you when you are vulnerable or defending a position/line. Example my speed 12 outhandles their rubbish prize veyron and dodges the crash attempt to take the lead then boom I get kicked. Happens too often for my liking but there are rooms out there that are respectful and race clean for the joy/fun of racing not just to win at all costs.

Also can't set enough cars as favourites so we are limited if the host gets too creative with the rules.

*what limits are missing for you?
Personally, I think it is stupid that I can only select from an extremely limited list of 52 cars to allow in my races. If the car is not on the list I have to make sure all my friends own the car! very lame imho, ymmv
:)

*I have only experienced a few disconnects and I have never experienced any long load screens. My disconnects have all been in crowded rooms of 14-16 people. Yes, I would like to see this problem fixed.

*yes, I agree about lag. It is not horrible, but it could be better. maybe an option to set ping limits or DL/UL limits (though that might be considered elitist?) dunno...

*I'm not sure why you mean about too much depends on host. It is his room so he gets to set the rules. please explain what you mean.

good luck! I, too, hope online gets better!
:)

Right, why the heck don't we at least have the option to use all the premium cars, even in stock form, from the recommended garage. That would be some small improvement. Of Course its freaking stupid that we can't use our entire garage full of cars online, makes no sense to me at all, other than some hardware/software limitation.👎

IMHO the online features are quite good.
Sure they can improve it and I am pretty sure they'll do that.

If you find the right, fair, people then it's a lot of fun.

It is my understanding that:
1) we have 52 recommended cars available to race online
2) we can add other ones selecting them from favorites (event though I never tried)
3) we cannot tune the car in the lounge (the tuning button is not active)
4) the cars are used as they are , no car upgrade available

My only doubt, at the moment is this point 4.
I saw some post and I have the feeling that some driver is not racing with stock settings... is anybody here that can confirm? thanks

I have only played online a few times but I have enjoyed it. I have joined races and things have been great, and if I join a room full of idiots then I just leave. I have also set up my own race and gave hp limit and minimum weight and max tyres and within a few minutes other people joined.

After a few minutes practice I started the race and it was clean and close.

You will always get people online who just want to drift, crash and generally mess about. As long as there are rooms for this to happen it helps to keep them in one place to leave serious racers in peace in their own rooms.

I tried it a few times and didn't like it. Just let me join a race, pick a car out of my garage that fits the restrictions, and go. None of this browse lobbies, enter and find out it's not at all what you expected, then wait five or ten minutes for the race to end, then listen to people prattling over their mic's (which are WAY too loud in comparison to the sound of the cars), etc.

I'm really happy for you GT5 and I'm going to let you finish, but Black Ops has the worst online connection on Ps3.

Yeah...a Kanye joke in 2011.
