Online Racing Guidelines - Network Problems

In our league, we're trying to come up with the best way to judge network problems, in terms of final placement, scoring or concession (a sort of racing equivalent to baseball's "ground rule double"). Specifically: racers dropping out in the middle of a race due to network troubles, or the game kicking them out, etc. What do other people do in this situation, in terms of assumption of final position, scoring, concession, or whatnot? There are obviously several different contexts to be considered here. A few examples: Dropping out when...

  • the race has not started yet
  • very early in the race
  • in the middle of the race
  • at the end of the race
Also to be taken into consideration, I suppose, is handling things fairly when people try to abuse the rules by deliberately dropping out for some sort of unfair advantage or gain.

If you drop out because you lost your connection, you just lose.:)

I race in 2 leagues and a couple weeks ago I was in first place in a 35 lap race with only 2 laps left to go, 2nd place was well behind me and all I needed to do was not crash and would have had an easy win..... well, I lost my connection due to storms in my area :ouch: I ended up with no points and what amounted to a last place finish. It sure wouldn't have been fair to the other racers who finished to have points deducted from them because of my problems.

Yeah, that seems to be the concensus in the few online leagues I've been in.

One, at the beginning, had a "one disconnection" rule, where if, at the beginning of the race, someone disconnected, we would start over. But, that was quickly shown to be unfair to the person who managed to stay connected at the first start, but was disconnected at the second!

So, ever since, it's pretty much been you disconnect, you lose.

Race Modified Endurance Tour awards points for DNF/Disconnect at a level lower than last place. That way if you disconnect you still get some credit.

Here's their points scale:

Place:
1. 50pts
2. 47pts
3. 44pts
4. 41pts
5. 38pts
6. 35pts
7. 32pts
8. 29pts
9. 27pts
10. 25pts
11. 23pts
12. 21pts
13. 19pts
14. 17pts
15. 15pts
16. 13pts
DNF/Disconnect - 10pts

I'm not involved with them, just came across it yesterday while researching for my own event.

I don't use a points system in the event I organize (Monday Night Endurances), but we still have to deal with disconnects. Because the race is a casual event, we're usually gentlemen about letting pre-race disconnects or people who miss the race entry by seconds join. We just restart and let everyone back in.

We've had people disconnect mid-race. It really sucks especially because we run a single 60-90 minute race that people sometimes prepare all week for. As far as I'm concerned, that's the breaks. If I disconnected mid-race I wouldn't want everyone to stop and let me join. That's not fair to everyone else.
