Well, what struck me as odd is this: I was racing the last few days and had those jaggy shadows. I fired up GT5 for another few fast rounds at Tsukuba just now and the shadows are as smooth as silk... No flickering, no jaggy edges, no nothing.

I can only guess what happened, but... maybe the game had to dump some of the data to the hard drive (you know, install it...) in order to smooth the shadows.
Well, I dunno, really, but I don't actually care either. Just hope it stays that way.

Edit: Okay, Tokyo R246 looks perfectly smooth as well.

agreed
i played the game before installing it
and there were alot of jaggys
but after i installed it there seemed to be less
so i guess over time it will keep installing and the shadows will get better

Guys stop bitching about shaddows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game is running on pretty old hardware, what is it smth like 7900gt for pc or close? Game looks just stunning let alone on that crappy hardware its being running on. Shaddows are bad only during start of the race, than they are smoothed out, also they bad when you burn rubber, but everything else is awesome. When u compare gt5 vs gt5 prologue u will see that ps3 is being pushed to the limits, because u can see noticable graphics improvement over the prologue, especially field of view - its just insanly deep - you can actually see very far in gt5. If you want shaddows wait for ps4, cause on this hardware with everything else being unchanged its impossible. Enjoy your driving and dont pay attention to shaddows.

The shadows are better on GT4 lol. It is a shame they are jaggy and if they can be sorted it would be great. Having said that when I'm racing they don't stop me having a massive grin across my face!

I directly installed and the shadows don't look good. So I wonder what it would have been if I tried before.

For me it seems to depend on the car and the track, actually the same as in GT5P. As the problem was in GT5P already and we're seeing it again now means to me that it is not something they can easily fix and definetly not with a patch. But one can only hope of course...

Apart from this I have nothing really to complain about.

I haven't voted, but if forced I would vote no, cause it doesn't "need" a patch, as the poll asks.

- Take weakest aspect of game
- create poll asking if weakest aspect should be improved...

of course people will vote yes.

And I hope it does get patched, but I don't think it -needs- to be done.

I can't watch replays without being disgusted by my horribly glitchy car. It's like the paint is covered in ants and they're all crawling around and stuff.

Sorry that's the best analogy I can come up with

"so i guess over time it will keep installing and the shadows will get better "

Some very wishful thinking.

The game isn't a looker, it is not the second coming that a lot of the fans here expected. Lets be honest, in the graphics department, it's 7/10 at best. I'd say even forza 3, which has been out a while, gives it a pretty sounding kicking in many many ways (just compare the reflections, forzas are beautiful, detailed and smooth, GT5s is like watching 8 bit style pixels travel up the car). Now I'm sure someone will jump on me, going on about lighting or something, as if that's an excuse for a tent to pop out of no where and ps2 quality tracks.

OH well, how long until phrases like "just you wait until GT 6, that's going to fix everything" start getting used? Sure they said the same things about GT5...

Yes I am negative, frankly, I expected better.

First of all
GT5 Dont look stunning at the moment! it has potential but the jaggies are nothing in comparrision to the poor framerate and slight blurred effect now on everything.

Play GT5P then go back to GT5 the difference is clear. Even the first Japanese demo which i still have on my hard drive looks better than the current build.

looks like something from DX7 with that aliased look on shadows and the body when smoke is behind it

It would be nice if they could fix this. It's not having unrealistic expectations if GT5P did it right (or good enough) 3 years ago.

Yeah, I think the graphics will get better over time, Yesterday I notice a lot of shadow issues and it seems to have got better today.

I dont know how PD could let this game out, with such obvious visual flaws, given their rep for perfectionism. :(

Shadows are ruining the visual experience.
In-game graphics in general have been downgraded since Prologue, that's not good.

Same for Jeff Gordon and Grand Tour sequences.

I find them vwe distracting and disappointing. The shadows do seem worse than GT5 Prologue even though this issue existed to some extent in that game too - usually across the dash in cockpit view.

If it can't be fixed I'd like an option to turn off shadows.

They are very ugly. What did they do wrong man. Also I hate how DP wastes their time making good graphics, when they shouldn't be doing more than what you play with (in game models). I don't care about my damn car in photo mode. Maybe they'd have like 100 or more cars detailed if it wasn't for this. How I see it is they forgot about shadows cause they are to busy with photo mode garbage. A player spends maybe 0.00001% of his total time doing stupid things like this, but they find it overly important.

Ticks me off..

Have you guys seen the spectators in the rally stages? lol! There not even PS2 gen graphics, still I love this game!!!!

I don't mind whether or not they're fixed, because all in all GT5 is a great game.

But they are very unsightly, I must admit. The issue is so glaringly obvious that I actually doubt very much that PD 'forgot' to correct it. For whatever reason, I suspect that they weren't able to do anything about it otherwise they definitely would have sorted it out long before the game's release.

Having said that, it doesn't really affect the experience that much and you can still enjoy GT5. I'm happy either way.

Definitely. It's my biggest issue with the game, at times the shadows are perfect but even in replay mode they can look atrocious.

Take a look at all the higher spec PC games that are out there. Most PC games allow tuning of the graphics levels (in particular the shadow details etc). I'm almost certain that GT5 is no different and developers would have some control over the graphical detail of their own game.

Only thing is, shadows can use a lot of processing power and this is probably why they are like they are - allowing the game to run nice and smooth at 60FPS.

I agree that this is a finishing touch that would be nice, but unless they can improve shadows without affecting the frame rate I would suggest they leave it alone.

Aside from the shadows... Don't you love driving a black car on Monza in the rain, and the sides and underneath go all blocky? Wow... It's brilliant for a next gen game.
The flickering shadows are also stunning in photomode. And gotta love even more those objects suddenly disappearing on the scenary. How about that peogeut 207 badge on the rear, going all blurry from rear view...

On physics, the game is brilliant. Visually... I'll admit it, Forza rounds rings around it.

The shadows don't bother me, the scenery does in tracks like Deep Forest and Trial Mountain. If you can even call it scenery, they are just flat textures with some ugly trees painted on it, with here and there some ugly "3D" trees in front of it. That is unacceptable for a PS3 game. I rather have them do something about this, and the ugly grass etc. textures on some other tracks.
