The shadows don't bother me, the scenery does in tracks like Deep Forest and Trial Mountain. If you can even call it sceneryt flat textures with some ugly trees painted on it. That is unacceptable for a PS3 game.

Yip, MGS3 on the PS2 had full 3D trees, with branches, leaves randomly falling down. The blades of grass blowing with the wind... MGS3 on a PS2 in 2005.

I think Deep Forest looks great.. maybe if you stop and look around you'll notice old stuff but while driving it's great.

Also I don't seem to have as much jaggies as some are saying here. Yes during the pre race clip it's pretty bad with shadows, but again when I race the track it looks great.

I can live with GT's ugly trees, I can look past that. But those flat tree textures so close to the track are unacceptable for a PS3 game imo. They are right in your face. Looks like they just ported those tracks from GT4 and did little to nothing to improve it.

Whats pissing me off is the shadows on the number plate and the rims are sooo low quality, there is no need for soft shadows in those places also i would have preferred no shadows to ugly jaggy shadows,

To me prologue looks better than gt5 cause of these ugly shadows

I think they spent the majority of the PS3's resources on Sarthe and the 'ring. Cockpit view on those tracks is amazingly good.

Well, GT5 is running on GT4's engine. No new gaming engine was made...

Then again Monza is also ugly, and that's a new track...
Who ever has been at Monza, well agree that GT5 has no Monza track...

I'd prefer an upgrade to the tracks (quite difficult, but not impossible...) than a fix for the shadows, but in the end I hope for both, Kaz just told that the game will be continuously updated so I hope for some patches for the graphic engine too...
GUY FOR THE FINAL TIME :

SHADOWS WILL NEVER EVER BE CORRECTED. !!!!

Kaz said that they can not make a patch for the games 3D engine,so it will look like that for ever...again NO PATCH TO FIX SHADOWS !!!!!
I read somewhere that the damage system is gonna be improved so I don't think they wouldn't be able to fix the graphic engine!

I voted no. Not because I like the jaggy shadows but I think that if pactches were to be made there are other things I'd look at first. The screen tearing when the scenery moves fast, for a start, that's much more distracting.

However, I have friends who haven't complained about this. Maybe it's because I'm not online so didn't get the 200Mb update, does anyone have any input on this?

In truth I'm not too bothered with the flaws, though. Once you've passed the, alas, still moronic A.I. cars and it's just you and your machine vs the track, it's pure joy. My wishlist would include my favorite cars in premium as DLC before I'd worry too much about the shadows...

I cant understand why people is looking the shadows instead to look the road and drive

Well maybe because people in 2010 are expecting a more visual satisfyling expereince when racing on a PS3 game. Or then we might as well have continued with GT2 and etc...

I'm sure if PD could they would have.

Yeah, this worries me. Even my wife, who is thoroughly annoyed by my passion for all things Gran Turismo, said, ¨That looks terrible¨. And that is a quote.

Edit: I could live with the jagged edges, its the annoying FLICKERING that looks so bad in replays. I tried the ´reduce flickering´ setting and that did nothing. I find that the Standard cars flicker less... almost more enjoyable watching those replays.

I dont know how PD could let this game out, with such obvious visual flaws, given their rep for perfectionism. :(

I don't think PD had a choice. Sony needed this game out before Christmas.

I'd gladly take it the way it is and have PD release updates. I don't mind, atleast we have it in our hands "now".

even with the minor visual flaws, game is brilliant.

it does so many things so well. actual racing parts are near perfect.
little visual problems I can live with.

Shaders that are used for the shadows take a lot of ressources for a hardware such as the PS3. Shadows from GT5P look less pixelated but on the other hand they are not dynamic...

Maybe PD is able to optimize things and get shaders to a more detailed resolution but I wouldn't put too much hope on it...

The game is only 20% complete. It never should have been released in the first place until ALL the cars were premium. While the shadows are a huge problem, getting the cars finished should have been their top priority. Maybe in time they will fix the shadows. But I wouldnt count on it at all.

I am thinking the real fix for GT5 shadows should be of hardware nature, not software. Try and turn on nice shadows on a high-end geforce 7 series PC videocard and you'll get a huge drop in performance, it also depends on the CPU processing capabilities. PS3 is already old and not up to PC graphics today, unfortunately.

Again, GT5P shows that shadows that don't look butt-ugly can be done on a PS3.

It has been know for some time now that 200+ premium and 800+ standard. It depends on person whether he wants to confine himself for 200 only or not. So I do not see the problem. I am happy they have put all of them :)

As far as shadows goes. I think they cannot fix it via patch but other glitches will be fixed. Gfx are great though

The jagged edges and shadows can be fixed, they appear fine on demos and other test versions of the game. The thing that many people have realized is that GT5 works completely with a continuous updating online system, we get news, the 5 daily museum cards and upgrades while we are running the game. With the perfectionist Kaz is I believe these minor graphic negatives will be automatically tweaked.

Here is a review from a person who attended the Madrid launch along with Jordan, he explains the patch process:

"This ongoing maintenance, you sense, will dominate Yamauchi's life just as building the game in the first place did. Already a further patch is scheduled to be available on December 1, allowing more extensive damage to occur to the cars, with other to follow that will upgrade "standard" cars to "premium" spec, with more detail and cockpit views."

More of the review here, it is very interesting: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/caraccessories/8162234/Gran-Turismo-5-first-drive.html

Definitely, I feel like this game would be perfect if it just had good shadows, smoke, and water without jaggies!

Some things just can't be fix with a simple patch. I'm afraid jaggy shadows is here for good, otherwise it would of been fixed before releasing game.

Why in prologue the shadows look just fine!?!
Was playing it some minutes ago and the shadows are really good in prologue, why would they fuk up with the shadows in the final game?

Agreed, I'm thinking something like this would've been fixed well before the release, which does make you wonder why it wasn't fixed in the first place. But I still love it nonetheless and believe it is still the best looking race to date!

The jaggy shadows don't distract from the playability of the game, but when they catch your eye you can't help but look at them, and it looks like PD didn't even really bother to make them smooth or realistic, they just look sloppy.

Who knows, maybe there was a technical limitation that meant they had to compromise on the shadows to keep frame rates up, or some other reason?

Whatever the reason, you can't argue that the shadows do look pretty crappy.

Look at the shadows on other games on the PS3 though and I can't help think that I've noticed issues with jaggy shadows on other games, but just not this bad...

GT5:P had jaggy shadows. They're worse in GT5 because they added weather, smoke, damage. These things can't be added for free so in order to get them to work within the limited amount of RAM the PS3 has there had to be some sacrifices made somewhere. They're ugly and sadly they're not going anywhere.

This is why I'm hoping GT6 is on the PS4 because the PS3 is just tapped out. There will always be jaggy shadows and resolution problems on this system. It's a 5 year old machine that's hard to program for.

But for what it is, GT5 is fabulous and while it's hard to ignore the buzz-saw shadows I'm past it and I'm having a lot of fun! :sly:
