Got this off another forum, but I haven't got real player to check it out. Basically its supposed to be the president of SCEA talking about online gaming. He talked about using the itunes model for PS2 and Gran Turismo, 99c for a new car, $3 for a new track, etc. :nervous:

That link does not work.

Xbox Live has started charging for downloading content for certain games. I'm not sure how well that's going, I don't have a Xbox. But, if it's one or two cars, I don't see a problem paying 99 cents for them. I think paying for a new track is a better idea. $1.99 for a new track? Sure, it helps PD to continue developing more Gran Turismo games and it's another way to keep the drift noobs out of online games. Only serious players will be able to drive online with that payware track.

Agreed.... I have wanted downloadable content since GT1... I remember thinking how cool it would be to download new rims, tracks, aftermarket parts, aero kits, etc..... I don't care if I have to pay for it... I expect it..... Anything that helps PD continue the GT series, is just fine with me......

;)

hmmmm......twas just wondering.

I just thought of a financial plan for GT4......I get $4.30 a day for money to buy my lunch..... But I could say to my mum that the prices have gone up slightly so she has to gemme $4.50. Now I get 20c each day......so I can buy a car each week 👍

Ok in all seriousness........how are we gonna pay for this stuff? A lot of people dont have credit cards or that kinda stuff.......so how would we pay?

Are you old enough to get a credit card? What about a simple checking account at your local bank that will issue you a debit card that links to your account? There are no age requirements for debit cards I don't think.

Aren't there pre-paid credit cards these days?

If worse comes to worse, don't you think that your parents would help you out with this in some way?

Anyway, as of right now, I'm not a fan of paying for downloadable content, especially cars and tracks, and at ~$3 for a new track, well, PD can keep their new track.
I'd rather pay a, let's just say, annual fee that will pay for new cars, tracks, updates, server maintainence and any other patch that would counter any glitches, codes and cheaters in the online game.

I guess that I would pay for it...but...I'd already be down about $200 for the online capabilities.
  • $100 (I think) for Sony HDD
  • $40 for Sony Network Adaptor
  • $50 for GT4
I guess if enough people did it, they'd make good money off of it and It'd really help them out. And maybe some little features that people want incorporated could be put in with a patch or something similar.

I always thought they could supply new cars or tracks on cheeper disks that can then be downloaded onto the HDD (of course you'd have to have one of these as well) The disks could be sold as different styles of cars or tracks that would appeal to different tastes - American Muscle - Euro classics - LM proto racers - Rice-Mobiles - Skylines etc etc. Same with tracks - Japanese circuits - Classic F1 tracks (Spa, Brands, Zandervoort etc) - Made-up capitol city street circuits etc. I've thought ever this since GT1 came out.

You pay for your game, it's then up to the developers to provide support or leave it till the next release. PC games release patches all the time, with levels, etc, and you don't need to pay for them.

I'm against this releasing of extra bits and pieces, it smacks of Nintendo's GBA link for their GameCube games where you need both bits of hardware to get certain aspects of the game. Just put the game out and leave it at that, to start charging for extra bits is out of order. For all you know all the stuff released as 'Downloadable Content' could have easily been included in the retail release, this is just a way of fleecing the consumer.

For those who argue that they're just supporting the game and trying to help out the players, then they should offer it for free, like PC developers do.

I concur...

I also think that it shouldn't be only available for people with the necessary equipment...

If a full patch was required to include some cars that should have been added into the game then you should be able to trade in your old disc for a new one to get the stuff...

The other way to go therefore is "Expansion disks" But what makes a good expansion disk?

A lot of them just have more tracks/maps/cars/skins/enemies/units (depending on style of game) which is simply a lame expansion disk... a good expansion disk would extend the game to a new level (I.e. making GT4.5) for instance in GT terms... an expanion disk for GT3 could've been to get Online ability (With a few more tracks, cars and championships)

An expansion to GT4 (Pure speculation cos we don't actually know what's in GT4 yet) would have to be something that extended the game beyond it's original format.... So for instance adding Motorbikes and Trucks?!

The one thing i've always longed for, after exhausting a version of GranTurismo, is a way to play the same game with different cars and tracks. An expansion disk would enable you to do that - without having to wait for the 'new-and-improved' GT(what ever comes next) to be released 6months to a year later than originally stated.

Paying per car and per track won't work. To race online with a new car, your opponent has to have the same one too. With everyone buying their own different cars, you would often not be able to enter races.

The only way this can work is with upgrade packs. A bunch of cars and tracks for one price(see PGR2) This way you can also work with versions. Original is version 1 and upgrade is version 1.1. People who buy the pack can race anyone who has the same version, because they also have the same cars.

Also, a nice idea would be that the cars are included in the existing manufacturers garages. This way you still have to earn the cars with your creds instead of getting them al at once. ;)

I wouldn't mind paying for it by the way.

How about a prepaid credit card from PD. Like you could take 50 bucks and go buy one at the store and you go online and buy what you want form gran turismo. I think it would be better than having people use credit cards for like 2 bux. This way the people pay 50 bux to download track and its good forever. Id buy 10.

I don't really know what to say here.

One way I'm for it, because we can download it, but...

a) who is going to make the new models? PD or other people, like for example Midtown Madness 2?
b) surely sharkports would defeat the objective of this?
c) I wouldn't really want to pay 99 cents per car, because if there becomes 1000 new cars available I'd want them all really, and thats $990!!

I want downloads but i think that it should either be free or u have to buy a different version of GT4 to have the license.

Read my post. It isn't possible to do a release per car. If you want to play online at least....

Think PGR2...

And why wouldn't PD model the cars? You would be paying for it wouldn't you?

Well, if you don't you wouldn't get the expansion pack. :) In the sony's press conference on the e3, gt4 and paying for content were mentioned together. So the option is seriously being considerred by the big boys.

well it will never be available to North American gamers as it would 'confuse us' as to which version of GT we were playing... apparently the logic as to why NTSC R1 didn't get GTC or Prologue ;)

In all seriousness... downloads should be free... but offer an expansion disc to buy for those that don't have net connections to their PS2.

I wou;dn't pay 99c for a new car in GT4, if there ended up say 200 extra cars available to download that would cost 198$ to have them all, and thats before paying for extra tracks. And after paying for GT4, the HDD and network adapter I would not take kindley to PD saying I have to pay more still to get the full GT4 experience.

***noob postage alert***

Maybe I'll go start a Car Wishlist thread!

You may not be willing to pay 0.99 for a car, but how about $5.99 for a Ferrari, Lambo, and Porsche content download? I bet a whole lot of you would drop that 6 bucks. I sure would.

P.S: Is this my first post? I forget... I've been lurking here a long time, but I guess this WAS my first post.

No, I wouldn't. Not for a few cars. Do you have any ideal how much you would be being ripped off if they did that.

And welcome to GTP capnlarge (I dont want to know what gave you the idea for that username lol).

Well, as others have mentioned Microsoft released a Premium Download for PGR 2 that costs $5.99 to download and includes a few new cars and a new city. While I'm not so inclined to pay that for PGR 2 (It's an okay game, but you never truly feel like you own the cars you unlock) I would certainly pay for a few new cars and a new track for GT4. (Especially if the Enzo was part of that download)

P.S: Capnlarge is sort of an inside joke. (as you might imagine) It was my halloween costume one year actually. I just kinda threw some stuff together and put on some random face paint in like 10 minutes. My friend said I came as Cap'n Large to make up for the fact that I basically dressed up randomly, instead of having a real costume. The name sorta stuck for whatever reason, and I use it on pretty much every forum I visit.

That's a good remark!
But I would save a lot by not buying any Kei car or fictive car. If more people did the same, it could push PD to develop more "wanted" cars.

Exactly. That's just what I mean. Though perhaps you should have to pay a small fee for the license to download, i don't know. Trouble is, how big are tracks and cars in GT4? I only have a 512k conection so it would take a while i guess.

The cars are a couple of hundred k and the tracks would be maybe 10-20mb if I had to guess.

paying for extra cars and tracks is bogus if u ask me except for the proposed discs but they sure as hell better contain a lot of content...not like 10 cars.

payment per car/track wouldnt really be good, but paying for an expansion i wouldnt really mind. much like how ffxi has expansions, GT4 could also have those. mayb one every 6 months or every year to get all the new cars that recently came out and whatnot. mayb 10 bucks per expansion or something.
