Penalties on Online room Route X Free Run

I entered on a room , chose the car and went to the track.
It was in free run and I was messing around and suddently I hit my friend and I got penalties.

In 2.02 (I think, may've been 2.02) they introduced a penalties in free run option. It's so someone doesn't cut all the corners in free run and then gets pole for the race.

Penalties can be turned off in Free Run by the host. It's kind of pointless to use them unless your qualifying for the race.
