DVD-9 is a dual layer format. You can use WinHIIP to copy PS2 games to a PS2 formatted hard drive using a Windows computer, including the new format.
Oooh okay. So is this what we will have to do with GT4 in order for it to work?
I'm just not sure, for instance, if there are any problems when using this system. For instance, can you still do all of the things you could normally do, like load/save onto the memory card, or whatever, when you play the game the normal way using the disc?
Also, do you have to insert the HD Advance disc every time you boot up the PS2, or do you just simply start the PS2 up without any disc in the drive and somehow select which game you want to play?
Thanks guys :)

You have to have the HDL / HDA disk in the PS2. It loads like any other game and then gives you a menu of the games you've "installed" to the hard drive. After you select a game from the list it loads it just as if the game disk were inserted ... only faster (:

Memory Card saves work just as normal, unfortunately. If there were a way to have it do that on the hard drive, life would be so much better.

There are a few games with a few problems, and some games that just flat out don't function with HDL. Check the compatability list in my signature.

Oh okay, so it isn't something that is a sure thing to work. Thanks for the info though! :)

If you use a regular computer to transfer the disc to the harddrive it should always work though. (I say should, as I'm repeating what friends tell me, haven't tried myself yet ... but gt3 load times improve a great deal, that I can tell you :D )

Yes, a computer will copy the game every time. That doesn't mean the game will run.

Arwin - you play GT3 more than me so you would obviously know, but it didn't seem to improve them a great deal to me. After all GT3 was already fairly quick to load (:

I hope GT4 works with HDL. I feared that Sony had found a way to block compatibility with their games on HDL. Hot Shots Golf 4, a recent Sony game flat out didn't work with HDL. Yet, another recent Sony game, Killzone did work without problems.

So, I have high hopes for GT4 on HDL.

I dunno, $200 is quite a bit of money for me, since I'd have to buy the network adapter, hard drive, and disks.... But then again, when the PS3 comes out, I could move the hard drive to my computer afterward, reformat it, and use it later.... I dunno though, it's a lot of money up front.....

it is a lot of money up front... but then again, I spent $150 to have a mod chip installed - and then another $80 on a network card... and now i'm thinking of spending another $100 on the hdd. At least I won't have to buy hdloader though

NewEgg has the 120GB drive for under $90. Looks good to me.
i have a problem, i just want to know what happened.
i have a sony hd, the one that came with final fantasy 11. and i had like 7 games on. i was play def jam fight for ny using the hd loader
i wanted to play another game so i restarted the ps2, and there i had a message with yes and no at the bottom, the thing froze so i restarted. the message came on again, i pressed yes and all the games where erased. what happened, can someone explain?

Thanks for this thread guys!!! I just picked up HD Advance 2.0 and a PS2 Ethernet adapter for $50, I used an old 60gb Maxtor hard drive that I had laying around.

This works great!!! Now I need to rent some games!!!

When I get my copy from GameFly, I'll let you know.

I'll post compatibility for MGS3, Goldeneye 2, and NFS:U2.

You said there was a message? What did it say? Did you have the HD Loader disk in the drive?

Sweet! What about online? Does it use DNAS? (btw, how can you tell if a game uses DNAS anyway?)
I haven't tried online yet (San Andreas keeps pulling me back :) ). I know the first Underground used DNAS so, Underground 2 most likely does too.

Awesome, sounds good! I think I'm definitely going to get this for myself for Christmas (I would right now, but I don't want to fail finals, lol). I think a 120GB Maxtor ATA-133 8MB HDD will suit me well, with HDAdvance 2.0. That will allow me to have about 25 games on the HDD, which is more than enough for me :) Mwahahahahha...

A 120GB drive will get you more than any 25 games - try 35 to 40!! (:

Also, don't go out of your way to get the latest and greatest hard drive. If you can get a 120GB Maxtor with lower specs for significantly cheaper I would do it. You won't see massive increases in performance with the PS2 using a faster drive, because the PS2 just can't take advantage of that.

But if you are planning on using the drive in something else later, go right ahead (:

Yeah, that's true. I should have said at least 25 games, because I worked it out so that (not that all games do) used the full 4.7GB capacity of the DVD's. So 120GB / 4.7GB = 25 games (well, 25.531914893617021276595744680851, to be exact, lol).

I have another question. If I was to get, let's say, the GT4 BMW demo disc, and I have a non-chipped PS2, HDAdvance won't play it, will it? I will need a swap disc still, correct? In that case I would not be able to use HDAdvance for that game, but that's no biggie.

I usually am (:

And figuring HD capacity I used the average of 3GB per game. There are quite a lot which are under that and very few that are over. At least in my experience. But most importantly, can you think of the minimum 25 games that you would want on there all at the same time? My HD is just a little over half full and half of those games I don't even play anymore.

HD Loader is just so cool (:

Yeah that is definitely true, I'm very selective of games that I like to play, lol.

I'm Having trouble getting the diffrent modes , like mode 3 every time I press select it freezes. ( I press it in the : Play game or copy game screen .) Am I doing it wrong ?

Highlight the game you want, press select, and choose the mode you want. Press select again to exit out and press X to start the game.
