I don't know what it is but it just all seems boring, it's blue and white...and that's about it. Nothing stands out.

Especially this one:

Like I say hopefully they're not final, I'm sure we saw some early XMB shots that didn't look that good.

Hopefully they can make it have more the Wow factor look, the PS4 video animations look quite good so hopefully they can implement that look into the design.

It must be a slow news day... Fingerprints/dust/scratches on a console and the "bland" user interface. You're not going to notice any of those things when you're playing games.

Yes, but this is a games console. I don't know about you, but when I use a console, 99% of the time I'm playing games or watching dvds. I use a pc for other things so the UI is more of a concern.

Maybe a reason for going so simplistic with theme is to allow more power for the games but maybe they could go two stages with the UI, no 3D background while in games but 3D while not playing games. I don't mind how it looks to much really, as long as it is quick and gives more resources to the games.

This is a game console where Sony will be replacing the award-winning interface that they built their entire brand of products around for the past 8 years for a new one. I'm struggling to see how discussion of the interface is worth so little of everyone's time that you feel fit to dismiss it entirely.

I'm not dismissing discussion of the actual functionality of the UI. It's the complaints about the appearance that seem rather pointless. I mean, we will most definitely be able to "spice things up" by using alternative themes.

Edit:

And not to nitpick, but the XMB was first used on the PSX console which released nine and a half years ago.

I'm not saying it's a dealbreaker but just something that currently disappoints me. Yes most of the time you play games but the UI is important as well, especially when PS4 is about more social aspects within games.

So would I but it this really the first time you've seen a UI critiqued on looks? That is basically the two key things for UI, looking good and working good.

It'll be the same when the console is revealed itself, you don't think people will critique it's looks rather than just hope it functions as it should?

There's new rumours. Sony may NOT launch a next-gen console...

Sony was quick to shoot down rumors that a PS4 would be announced at this year's E3, but things just got a lot more interesting all of a sudden, as cloud gaming service Gaikai has commented that one of the current console manufacturers actually won't be creating another console for the next generation. Speaking during CES, Nanea Reeves, chief product officer for Gaikai, predicted, "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."

If true, wow. With Wii U guaranteed to launch in 2012, that means it's either going to be Microsoft or Sony. Our take is that it's probably Sony because financially the company would have a tougher time with the huge R&D and manufacturing for yet another new console.

Beyond that, it's easy to speculate that perhaps Sony is working on some major cloud gaming partnership with Gaikai instead of devoting resources to another piece of hardware. We'll bring you more as we hear it!

PS4 is finalized, but we have no news on the Xbox 720-- STILL.
I do not think we'll have a nxtgen Xbox...

Exactly the same as the situation before the PS4 announced. So what reason do you have for a next gen Xbox not happening except one outside person talking about big news at E3 last year that never happened?

The pic SimonK posted of the UI pretty much answers it but, just to be sure, will we be able to use our current PSN accounts on the PS4?

Eks

I don't think it's been officially, 100% confirmed but I'm sure we will, it'd be absolute madness from Sony to have to start fresh again.

I haven't seen it confirmed either but since the same log in is used across most/if not all the services that Sony offers and they goal has been simplified/unified networks I don't see them suddenly changing that. Maybe they will give the option to change the username however.

There has to be a point where everything is too simple, don't you think?

You mean the interface?
Well no really,if something is simple but effective that's fine by me,some sort of balance may appeal to most.
As long as all features are laid out efficiently I'm happy.
