What do they mean 'mature development environment?'

It's older and thus more familiar to developers?

Possibly, I don't know when the dev kits of each console were released though.

Or it could just mean a lot of time has been spent on it and thus it will be of a higher quality.

The rumor is XboxOne only has 12 GNC cores where PS4 has 18

50% of 12 is 6. 6+12=18=50% more graphics power. X1 has 3 operating systems running simultaneously Its unkown how many PS4 has but rumors sugegest only 1GB or less of the OS.

Killzone shadowfall uses exactly 3072MB of memory to run the game and frame buffer. They built a game around a 4GB system with the other 1024MB for the OS. But PS4 has 8192MB's If thats an indication of how much is used for the OS. It has a secondary chip for other OS tasks. the CPU could have more leg room for PS4 even if they are nearly the same.

it was rumored that PS4 had 1.84TF of GPU power vS 1.23. Some have done the math based on AMD GNC architecture and 18(1.8TF) vs 12(1.23TF)

PS4 indeed has 18 GNC cores and 1.8TF of power.
 
The way things are going, it seems that the PS4 will be the dominant gaming console in terms of power, I hope it isn't just on paper this time.

It shouldn't only be on paper as Sony are ditching Cell and going with an X86-64 architecture which is easier to develop for.

I wonder, though, if it would've been possible to design a Cell processor with an x86 architecture. Before the Sony conference, an 8-core, 128 SPE Cell processor was rumored to be in the PS4. 128 SPEs! That's alot, even if they're "sub-cores."

You haven't seen PS4 reveal video ?

It uses x86 architecture processor. Most common processor. Unified memory, no split like PS3 just 8 gigs GDDR5 ram. Also the gpu is very common, similar to amd pc video card. They said it is a supercharged PC. Easier for devs to make games.

The exact same can be said of the Xbox One so that nullifies that point. It doesn't automatically mean an easy dev environment.
 
Problem with XO is not game dev. It is just not faster like PS4. So they need some way to make games run same on both console. XO has slow ram but the gpu got special 32mb edram which is faster. But overall it is little problem for game devs to get same performance like PS4.

But they were talking about the dev environment. You telling him about the hardware as if that is an automatic reason the PS4 dev environment is seemingly easier doesn't mean much when the Xbox hardware is essentially the same as what you mentioned.

It won't be the Cell processor then ;). I get what you mean though and Intel Larrabee would have been like the x86 way. PS4 does have Cell SPURS idea in mind through GPGPU. Makes up for the weak CPU in PS4.

The main problem is graphics, performance that is what the dev meant. Programming is basically same for both consoles.

Age makes you sceptical to trailers, release videos etc. Been burnt before. I still expect some skeletons on the PS4 closet too lol.

This. Don't expect the PS4 to be without it issues. Just because Sony haven't said anything about them yet, don't rule out there being nasty surprises until the console has been released.
 
I'm actually surprised how many skeletons the press managed to get out of MS after their conference. We haven't learned everything about the PS4, certainly not. Many areas still have vague answers.

You can hardly compare it to how octo-core CPUs perform on PCs. With propper optimized 8 thread multithreading support, games will run much better than they currently do on PCs with 8 core processors, although those are nowadays normally fast enough to hide the inefficiency.



I'd have liked to see them using a successor of the IBM PowerXCell 8i (which is NOT the one in the PS3) cpu. Maybe we'll see a 28nm extended1PPE+16SPE unit one day (planned but canceled was a 2PPE+32SPE 45nm). Although plans seem to have changed and it looks like a hybrid x86 - cbea ppc roadmap for the future.

There are some great gaming monitors on the market accepting 120hz+ feed (2D) from PC graphics crads... now with the PS4 GPU coming straight from PC land, wouldn't it be perfectly plausible for an option in the display settings to be set to 120hz?

Would be great to see, I've also wondered for a while if TV's will adopt 120hz within the near future. Not on 4K sets, but newer 1080p models... any rumours on that?

And what should that be good for? Games and movies will never run in 120Hz.
 
I'm referring to "true" 120hz being outputted via a PC graphics card with which you can run any game on a "true" 120hz monitor in 2D.

LCD Televisions create 120hz/240hz or even 480hz with post-processing techniques, creating a very fluid picture for films, but of course this creates a very noticable input lag in gaming (which is why TV sets have a gaming mode to reduce lag).

So there are several monitors on the market that accept true 120hz signal and if the PS4 outputs at 120hz, even it "only" reaches 60fps, there is still a significant improvement in fast motion fluidity... most PC gamers a noticed a definite difference and these monitors really shine if you have a PC capable of going well beyond 60fps...

I was just wondering about this... lol, I don't see why they wouldn't allow this unless it has a significant impact on how the PS4 architecture can operate... but 3D shoundn't be any less of a strain.
 
It probably won't be there on launch due to the small install base for it but as it grows, i'd assume subsequent software updates will eventually allow this feature to be used.
