Don't tell me you were actually expecting a life size representation of the US. That would be impossible. From what I heard, it takes 90 minutes in a fairly fast car. It's still huge. I heard somewhere that their version of NYC was about the same size as liberty city in GTA:IV. Unless their version of NYC is disproportionately large compared to the rest of the map, it must be absolutely massive.
I would expect them to not represent it as the USA if it is not going to be at least somewhat close. If a fast car you could get to Maryland from Atlantic City in 90 minutes maybe even a little beyond but that is just a small drop in the bucket. 90 minutes at an average speed of 120 mph is only 180 miles. NY to LA is just shy of 2500 miles. An avg speed of 120 mph would take over 20 hours.

Of course a map that is 90 minutes across would be a large map for sure I just would not think it should be represented as driving across the USA.

Actually, you never had the choice in the first place. With ps plus on ps3 and vita, you weren't paying for online gaming. Just the free content. I agree that it is splitting hairs and they are moving online gaming behind a paywall, but from what my friends tell me about ps plus, it's well worth it as is.

It's a shame for those who can't afford it, but at the same time, they are getting decent free games on a regular basis. If only a few of those games appeal to you, you'd still get your money's worth. Hell a friend of mine doesn't even have a ps3 (or a vita) right now but he has a ps plus account. He's just using his old psn account. You can "purchase" ps plus games on PC and download them to your console at a later date. He has about thirty games waiting for him to download when he buys a new ps3 next month. As long as you "purchase" them when they are available free in the ps plus section of the store, you can download them at any time. Providing your plus membership hasn't expired.

And on the bright side, at least services like Netflix and Hulu won't be hidden behind the paywall. I do understand why people are annoyed at having to pay to play online but I'm happy paying for plus. As long as they keep those free games coming.
.

I can afford to pay for it but I don't want (key word)to,I have a very slow internet speed so despite that some games may appeal to me ,I won't have the patience to download them,I'd also would like to know how Sony will improve online(will we get dedicated servers)now that that is a premium service I fully have the right to expect the PSN to be on par if not better than XBL.

Um, not really, MS has had 6+ years to improve the Xbox Live experience, expecting PSN to be equal/better than Xbox Live right off the bat is downright unfair. Not to mention Sony have to fund PS+, I would expect improvements to be made over time (probably at launch as well) but you have got to give them time. Remember you are getting PS+ as well, not just paying to play online, those like me who already have PS+ aren't paying any more than usual.

that ps+ monthly free game that everyone talks about, is free only during thar month, don't?

If its like PS+ is now then you'll only be able to download it that month but then as long as your PS+ doesn't run out you can keep playing it. I got my + about 5 months ago and I have like 30 games on my system now.

Of course a map that is 90 minutes across would be a large map for sure I just would not think it should be represented as driving across the USA.

The point is that it's a condensed version of the States, not a life-sized representation of just one area. Therefore driving across the map is similar to driving across the States, the main difference being that it's much, much smaller... In the same way a 1:43 scale model looks very similar to a real car, just tiny.

Dunno if this has been mentioned, but apparently it takes 90 mins to drive from coast to coast:eek:
Shortest distance is about 2100miles, therefore you'd only have to drive 1400mph. I'd say that's decent.

Yeah I know it's shrinked, no worries.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Is Running Modified FreeBSD 9 OS

Phoronix.
It's been exposed that the operating system powering the PlayStation 4 is Orbis OS, which is a Sony spin of FreeBSD 9.0. It's not a huge surprise FreeBSD is being used over Linux, in part due to the more liberal licensing. The PlayStation 4 is x86_64 based now rather than Cell-based, which makes it easier to use FreeBSD.

It's a bit of a surprise to see FreeBSD being used though when at the heart of the Sony PS4 is an AMD eight-core APU with Radeon graphics. There isn't a Catalyst driver available for any BSD operating system right now and the open-source driver ported from Linux with Radeon KMS and Gallium3D is still in a primitive state. Thus, Sony in cooperation with AMD must have developed their own graphics driver for the PlayStation 4 with FreeBSD or at least ported the Catalyst code-base to BSD.

The information of FreeBSD 9.0 powering the PlayStation 4 was shared at VGLeaks.com and based upon a second-gen development kit for the forthcoming console.

Always those Unix-like systems.

BSD isn't bad, it's actually great in lots of aspects.

It still sucks that we have to pay for something we didn't before I understand PS Plus its a good service I had a couple times and enjoyed it however this economy sucks 60 bucks a year that's a whole game it's getting more expensive to play these games as a hobby and as somebody who's been laid off several times and has to have a mortgage and has bills just want to pass time to play around with this friends yeah 60 bucks means a lot

I do understand at the money is going to be used to maintain the servers for online but most of us made a choice that we wanted to play online when we got service from our internet providers that we pay for every month it's a tricky situation I think they should have had two tiers. 1 being the free service and a higher one being excellent online service that you have to pay for just my 2 cents

Typically it's the gamers who play for hours and hours online and can't see the value in the rest of the service. I am guilty of this with Xbox Live. The service offers nothing for me, I do not play online much at all. With PS+ Its been worth it the two years I had it without online access.

It will be free on PS3 still, if you can't afford $49.99 for a good service(trust me cloud saves are life savers) Then why bother dropping $399.99 plus tax plus a game or games you'll have to buy if you want to just play games online.

I already have PS+ and its valid across PS3 and Vita, I get plenty of free content and discounts that will carry over to PS4 starting with a Free version of Drive club to test out to see if I want the full game.

If you only play the same 1-2 shooters online don't care for the playable games, discounts, free dlc, cloud saves auto downloads, auto updates on PS3 you won't want those things on PS4.

Call of Duty, GT6, Destiny, Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs are all coming to PS3 and will be free to play. What games do you "NEED" a PS4 for to play online to where you feel discouraged by PS+ @ $50? Many of my friends on PS3 have PS+ and online isn't apart of that choice.

For UK PS4 buyers;

I went into my local Game store yesterday and asked about bundles that are/will be available.

He said 'There is only 1 bundle available at the moment which includes PS4 and its accessories, Playstation Camera, Battlefield 4 Limited Edtion, Driveclub Limited Edition and 30 days free PS+ subscription. It hasn't been priced yet and probably won't be until 1 month to 2/3 weeks before full release which is also when other bundles will be released. I would recommend you placing your order ASAP so then when we are asked how many consoles we want, we give them a number based on the pre-orders we have. Once they're sold then we won't get them for a while afterwards. However, if you come in to collect your bundle and you decide you don't want the extras you just pay for the standard console and then we have other accessories to sell'.

I'm still waiting to see what bundles will be available before buying.

I doubt they'll even let you do that, just sounds like standard game rubbish to me, waiting is a good idea.👍

Are people holding off on purchases until the third party's have decided what DRM is to be used ?

Just wondering.

Not me, pre-ordered awhile back. If i know games are only online, i probably will not buy them. Anyways i mostly play single player.

I'm holding off until I can get one from the US, but the DRM makes no difference to me; I'm going to be using my PS4 for Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, exclusives I actually want and games my friends bring to my house (that is assuming the DRM will allow for that) but otherwise my PC is my main gaming machine. I imagine I'll wait until more info on MGS V is released to make a proper decision, but as it'll be on PS3 and GT6 is as well, I'm in no rush at the moment.

I was thinking more about the ability to trade in games. 3rd party's have the option to tie the game to your account if they so chose.

But it may harm rather than help, all they gotta do is check Online codes against disc sold, to see if its worth the hassle and disc space.

PS4/Xbox One controller size comparo.

I don't like the sharp edges around the d-pad and X,O▵☐.

The analog sticks of the ds4 don't look that great as well. Actually its the same with the x1 pad. But at least they dropped those annoying lines on the xbox 360 pad sticks.
Just sad that MS kept the concept of having convex a,b,x,y buttons, I hate them.

Possibly just me...

EDIT: I like that the ds4 is wider though.

The PS4 really doesn't look good there, no. It's maybe just the angle but the material looks a lot cheaper than promotional shots. I'm going to assume it's not a model representative of the final quality though.

Where? What are you referring to?

The pad?

The PS4 stick looks like it has just been touched and held by oily sweaty hands, should have been wiped clean first, the lighting and angle didn't help either.

I like the PS4 stick shape though, better than the bulky and butt ugly Xbox stick. My opinion, don't take it personal :)

Maybe its just seeing it side-by-side, but the Xbox remote just seems like it has an unnecessary amount of mass and looks too big.

I would also like to add... thankfully Sony left the sticks where they belong. I can't stand playing with an Xbox controller.

EDIT.

I am so sold on the DS4 after finding this.

Here's a comparison picture. I think the only reason why it looks larger is because the handles seems to be at a smaller angle.
