Kinda prefer the styling of the old one, but it seems like an excellent car. It's got me hunting in the used car ads for an old one now (not that I can afford one, but we can dream, right?...)

Pretty much all I can think of when I see the back side of the car. The front looks great though, but the Panamera vibe is strong with dat ass.

Agreed, the back of the is very uninspiring IMO. I'm not too keen on the intakes on the side either, they seem awkward and a little put of place to me.

I'm surprised they've managed to reduce the weight of the 981. One of my fears was that it would've grown in weight, causing it to lose the nimble telepathic steering I loved about the first gen. Though it appears to have grown in length but only slightly. Ultimately I didn't want to see it walk the same path as the modern 911 Carreras and become a mix of sports and grand tourer. Porsche should maintain the Boxster/Cayman as a pure driver's car.

That's the angle they are going with the Boxter and Cayman. The 911 had to grow up since it grew with the times. The Boxter and Cayman at least are still relatively new compared to the 911 and can afford to scrimp on luxuries here and there.

I noticed one thing about 911s is that they are usually chocked full of options, and the Caymans I came across are usually humbled in the features department. Usually ended at navi and probably PDK.

Everybody has different taste and mine differs from some of the other posters.
IMHO, not the best looking Porsche. Even the new 991 is not as good looking as the 997.

I like the new Caymon/Boxster about the same as the 997 in terms of appearance, but the 997 looks much, much better than either the 996 or 991 to me.

^ Porsche got the 997 right in the water-cooled era 911's IMO.

Any Cayman > Any 911

My opinion. Never liked pretty much anything Porsche has ever released, just not my kind of car and doesn't appeal to me what so ever. But the Cayman, just something about it that sticks out for me. In fact, the Cayman R is on my list of "must haves" if I ever win the lottery.

Not that I don't respect the 911s, I do, but the past decade I've been leaning more towards the baby Porsches due to them being attainable dream cars, used condition for me at least. Didn't pay attention to the Boxster until the Cayman came around and Porsche made them nearly identical styling wise.

930s, 964s, and the 993s are a different story though. If I could I would, oh so badly.

After many spy shots, finally here's the real thing fully revealed:

From TopGear.com/uk:
New Cayman and Boxster GTS

Porsche's mid-engined sportscars get halo offerings with uprated 3.4-litre flat six and more fast

Let's start with the Cayman. Porsche has today announced the fastest and most powerful ever Cayman to grace the streets of the World. It's the new Cayman GTS, and it's more powerful and more fast than any other before it.

This is chiefly because the 3.4-litre flat-six ‘boxer' engine has been tuned to deliver 340bhp (15bhp more than before) and 280lb ft of torque, while the Sport Chrono pack and active suspension have both been fitted as standard.

Both of those allow the driver to fine tune damper stiffness and throttle response, and in conjunction with Porsche's PDK double-clutch auto ‘box (which features launch control), the new Cayman GTS is able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds. That's a full 0.3s quicker than a Cayman S. Top speed sits at 177mph.

And that Sport Chrono pack includes dynamic engine mounts; when accelerating, cornering or braking, the mountings between the body and engine stiffen to reduce the effects of mass transfer. Yup, dynamic engine mounts. That's progress for you.

You get a new front spoiler and black-finish bi-xenon headlights, a new lower rear apron, 20in Carrera S alloys and the option of a 20mm lower ride height. Yours for £55,397.

Now the Boxster. The drop-top sports car also gets the same 3.4-litre flat-six, here tuned to deliver 330bhp and 273lb ft of torque, that - together with the PDK gearbox - sprints from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds (0.3s quicker than the Boxster S), and on to a top speed of 174mph; the first ever Boxster to top the 280km/h barrier.

There's the same Sport Chrono pack and active suspension as in the Cayman, a launch control function, the dynamic engine mounts that reduce the weight transfer when your palms get sweaty, 20in Carrera S alloys and the option of a chassis that's 20mm lower.

Externally the Boxster GTS gets a new front spoiler, rear apron and black-finish bi-xenon headlights, and inside there are sports seats and much Alcantara. This one will cost you £52,879, and both Cayman and Boxster GTS models will be available from May.

They will also probably be very good to drive.

I'm assuming that's in reference to the GTS trim. The car itself has been out for a few months now; drove one last year.

Yes, it's a reference to the GTS trim, and assuming I don't even know that the base 981 Cayman and Cayman S were already out, I'm not that incompetent and absentminded to the point where I didn't notice the posts above me featuring embed videos with the 981 Cayman S' exterior fully exposed as the thumbnails, as I was scrolling down.

Maybe I would miss them if I was drunk or overly sleepy, but at the time when I posted that, I wasn't.

How does it drive? Have you ever driven a 997 or a 991? If so, what is the difference and which one do you prefer, the 981 or the 991?

Too bad for the air inlets. This is my personal opinion but it ruins (I'm exaggerating a little bit :p) the lines of the Cayman. I don't like the air inlets on the 911 turbo as well.

The Cayman I drove was a new S model with the PDK & Sport Chrono packages.

As for how it drove.
I'm still on the wall about the looks as this time around, I feel the Boxster is the better looking of the 2 since they changed the flow of the Cayman's rear deck, but this thing is a lot more fun than the previous car. The PDK has improved much better imo, & isn't as jerky from a stop. And it's fast. Really fast. I didn't hoon about from any stop lights, but on a back road nearby, a 20-60 run comes & goes quick. The shifts are just so smooth & fast, it's hard to imagine what the DCT in a Ferrari F12 is like since it's supposed to be one of the fastest DCTs around.

With that being said, this is still a really fun car & I think will remain amongst the best driver's cars. I don't know what performance options this has, so I didn't attempt to find out, but even just kind of "pissing around" in the corners, it does build a lot of confidence unlike the ZR1 I was allowed to take out. You feel what the car can do & how easy it does it, so you want to go a little quicker. And it handles it easy. You have to sort of restrain yourself (or I did for obvious reasons) because I think this car has a high limit if its spec'd just right & allows you to play around near that limit until you hit the point of no return. It's the sort of limit though, that you might find on a race track, so as far as having spirited drives out on open 2 lane roads, this should feel right at home without getting you in over your head.
Extremely fun agile car, though I would admittedly still grab a Boxster S for the looks.

I've driven a 997 Carrera S with a 6-speed & that was a lot of fun. The 991s I've driven are a Carrera S & 4S Cabriolet with the PDK. Kind of hard to compare them based on the different transmissions, but what every journalist says about the new electric steering is definitely noticeable with the examples I've driven. The new 991 with the PDK really highlights just how much more feedback the 997 with the 6-speed translates back to the driver. Both really stellar cars, but the 997 with the option to row your own gears was much more fun thus my pick, though the 991 would definitely feel like the better one to take to the track; it builds that same confidence the Cayman does with the differences in the generations.
