There is no best. It's user preference.
I personally like the PSP better, but it does have it flaws.
Like,
Short (but not to short) battery life when playing intencive/online games.
The screen is known to have dead pixels (very common in ALL LCD screens).
The screen in prone to scratches if you dont have a good case.
And the one thing that REALLY bugs me is, the UMD disks are cased in plastic, but they have this square cut out that doesnt have a door covering it. I hate that because now i have to go out and buy another case/book for the games so i can put them in my pocket and not worry about them.
I personally like the PSP better, but it does have it flaws.

Personally, I'd go for a ds for the following reasons...
1. It plays GBA games.
2. It's cheaper.
3. Games are cheaper.
4. The psp has a crap battery life (3/5 versus 10ish).
5. DS games tend to be more original and fun, rather then just remakes of PS2 games.
6. The DS folds in half protecting the screens. PSP looks so...breakable.
7. Touch screen people!
8. Gunstar Future.
I will say though, the DS gives me thumb ache. The psp is far more comfy to hold. The psp also looks far far better, the DS looks like crap.

the psp uses all new technonlogy, when nintendo heard off what sony where planning, they thought that the psp will take over the handheld market, so they paniced. The ds has been rushed and been filled with old technology, the psp can go online using wi-fi, thats new in the handheld market.

Its all in taste in my opinion. Nether system offers the same basic gamplay. DS games are nothing like consoles were psp is exactly like consoles. And psp version of DS games are all better by 10 fold.

And what's wrong with paying for gameplay? Back when there were a lot of fun games, these games had crapy graphic, but we had FUN. Now, gameplay generally sucks ( there is some exceptions ), but the graphics are great. I'd rather have great gameplay than just good graphics. Take EA games for example, goldeneye was marvelous, but now the graphics are "bad". But it's still an excellent game, and even better when you play with 3 friends. But EA gave the new goldeneye good graphics, but the game sucks, mostly because the gameplay is bad. And between those two, the best game is the old goldeneye IMO.LaBounti

I have both ... I only play my PSP!
The DS is a great machine though. I love Nintendo's games, but right now GTA LCS and Hotshots Golf have me too addicted to take my 'tenders out with me. PSP's build quality is pretty shoddy though and the dead pixel thing is almost unforgivable (it took me 2 hours to find one that was acceptable with only 3 deaduns). I droppped the PSP on the floor and on/off switch now jams easily. Try breaking the DS! It ain't gonna happen.
There's no 'best' of these two if you ask me. It's all down to personal opinion. Let's see what I'm playing in a year's time...

Yes strangely enough, games are all about gameplay. Bit of spit and polish never hurts though.

PSP would be my choice, the DS is still for kids and the touch screen is prone to scratching with the stylus.
PSP is for the teenage market pretty much with its choice of games, and what does the DS have????? Nintendogs, WTF is that all about!??

Each system is aimed at an entirely different gaming market aswell as price bracket... this is why nintendo is still pushing the gameboy advance platform and saying that the revolution will not have all the 'bells and whistles' as some of the other next gen consoles.... it could be considered a gamble but there is a market for varing types of devices such as the DS and PSP....
It boils down to tastes and such, like this:
Are you looking for a portable media center (PSP) or something to play games on (DS).
Are you looking for fun new innovative game play (DS) or are you looking for the same games you play at the house to play on the go (PSP).
Are you looking to try something new (DS) or do you want to stick with something your more familiar with and might have fun with (PSP).
DS has more enjoyable games, I can't argue this enough. All of you who say otherwise, have NOT played it, or many of it's games. You'll talk all your childish amatuer noob gaming talk about it being a kiddie machine, but you know what, if that's your opinion then you obviously are only a casual gamer, and you really don't understand what makes games fun anyway.
Sure, GTA is cool, but come on, we've played the same game for 4 years, and it hasn't gotten any better, only bigger, that doesn't excite me. I like to see things change, and evolve, GTA hasn't. That's all the PSP has going for it right now as far as games. Everything else is a watered down port, point blank.
DS has more games that have more variety and a MUCH better online system (lag is so much less than on my PSP). There's just no arguing it, IMHO.
But it still boils down to taste and preference.

Man thats harsh, you forgot the IMO at the end of that . The only ports that are watered down are the ones by EA. I'm guessing you haven't played X-men legends or Burnout Legends. PSP has many good games with many to come. Wipeout is a new game and not a port of an existing game. Aside from the controls Me and My Katamari is better than its console counterpart.
But you must feel the same about Xbox360 then. No new gameplay what so ever many many ports and sequels and expensive. Sounds very much like psp. Has better graphics and more features than the competetion. The games are not great but they are not bad either. what was your drive to get an xbox360 if it has these similarities to psp that you dont like and I know the games you own more than likely are either ports or sequels. If its that you only need one system i can understand. There are games "you" dont like so "you" seem to not recommend it to people.
You say it comes down to taste but you also say psp has no games worth playing. No one has said DS games suck, just that they dont have a taste in its un-console like nintendoish games. It like you bash psp but then try to soften it up in the end. Dont say it has no games if you cant say what you dont like about every single one,Dont say GTA is the only psp game worth it, I dont own GTA nor have i played it. I've only played a few games and its all i really need to enjoy the system. I dont burn through game just so i can say i beat it and have to own every game out there. I play games to enjoy them not to beat them or play them for its gameplay.
I wont even say "try" games. I'll say research them find out every positive and negative about the game then decide if you want to play/own it or not.
I like ridge racer, I like Wipeout. The only other Ridge Racer for Ps2 was a launch title and wipeout came out in 2001. And via research I got those 2 games and have enjoyed every hour. But i wasnt interested in buying a psp until I learned I could play SNES and Gensis on it. That was my drive to get one and thats why i only onw launch titles its all i need. re living Mega Man X 2 right now. i've more choices of games than i need. over 50 games to play anywhere at any time. now 27 I can go back to my early gaming days on the go and what other platform lets you do that so easy.
I'm not trying to get you worked up con but to say it has no games then say its all in taste doesn't add up. to say all it has is GTA but you dont like it or want to play it just shows you haven't even played the games to just make a judgement. All your un-excitement can be applied to both ps2 and xbox, yet you still play them? PSP's gaming is just a portable playstaion sony never stated in their press releleases thats it will be an evolutuion of gameplay.

And as far as Me and My Katamari being BETTER on PSP...absolutely not. No way, hands down, it is not. The multi-player, for one, is not nearly as enjoyable (yes, I have played this game multi-player, we are AVID katamari players in my house, two of my roommates own PSP's and Katamari, however I sold mine and never bought Katamari).
THE CONTROL MAKES THAT GAME. That is all. You cannot say "aside from the controls" when that is what made the game so enjoyable in the first place.
In fact, out of the top 15 rated games on PSP, only about 4 were completely original titles, the other 11 were all ports that were stripped of features and content, and then placed on the PSP.
4 of the top 15 DS games are completely orginal titles, and 6 of them are returning franchises with completely new gameplay.

When i say traditional Nintendo I dont mean just gameplay wise but the whole playing experience, atmosphere and feel, unlike console games. You keep coming at me like I'm saying something is worng with the games. not once have i said anything negetive about DS games that arent console ports(most are bad). But what is your definition of a port? Mine is an exsisting game made for another system. since Burnout Legends doesnt exist on another system it's not a port just like Ridge Racer and wipeoutpure. But why are ports such a big deal to begin with?

I'll say this, I respect your points, and I'm by no means trying to offend/insult you I really do enjoy a good debate, as I'm sure all of you know, lol!!
I'm not trying to make an ass out of you or me, just having fun and debating points, it's interesting to me and I enjoy it
With that said, I can see where you are coming from, and I think our tastes differ so much that it would be hard to come to an agreement! haha. I still think that the DS offers slightly more original play, and a fun new edge on gaming over the PSP, but the PSP offers traditional home console games, while offering more functionality. I'm just a fan of fun on the go, and new fun. I'm not knocking the PSP, but I don't think either of us can sit her and argue that the PSP has a lot of "new" content. Most of it consists of pre-existing game engines that are taken a step down visually and put on the PSP. I would prefer a PSP over a DS, mainly because of my taste in games. The DS has very few games that I am interested in, and the PSP has GTA LCS, soon to have GT4 Mobile, plus a bunch of other stuff.
And in my opinion, the touch screen is a gimmick.

That's the mistake i made with the PSP, thinking that it would be worth getting as all the games look great, but then you get one and realise that there really aren't many you want to play. You've named 2. Worth spending £240 for a PSP and 2 games(?)
The touchscreen on the DS is a gimmick? Hmm, no i disagree.Admittadly there are some games that just don't use it (Mario Kart being one), but there are many games that are made to make the most of it and they really work, they're really fun. Get a good game that makes use of the touchscreen and your opinion will change.
The DS is actually much more powerful than the 64. The proof is in the frame rates and smooth visuals in comparison to some 64 equivalents. Look at Mario 64, then go play Mario 64 on DS. THe difference is AMAZING. Same goes for Mario kart.
Or try to play GoldenEye then look at Metriod Hunters. The difference is amazing. There is no comparison really. Sure, it's not as "visually" impressive as the PSP, but to say the games look bad, and are of a "bad selection" is retarded. The PSP is FOUNDED on ports, big whoop. The DS is not more powerful than Nintendo64. Mario 64 for DS does have more polygons but M64 was a launch title that barely cracked the hardware. Mario 64 DS lacks texture filtering, anti-aliasing and all the other graphical effects. Remove the graphic enhancement and lower the resolution its not hard to reproduce an old game on an old engine with new tricks.
