Posting Limitations & Restrictions

This idea was brought up among several senior members in the "HMRCWG" thread. We were discussing the possibility of making restrictions on the amount of smilies you can post in a single reply. This would eliminate the "smilie trains" that people like to reply with and would cut down on the amount of spam and garbage.

Another idea that could be imposed is a minimum character length per post. An example would be that in order for your reply to be posted your reply has to be over a certain amount of characters, such as 20 or so. You could use that handy "Check message Length" button right under the express reply box to see if you have made the minum amount of characters in order for your post to go up. I believe that if you have a truly good idea to share, or a insightful comment that 20 characters is not very much to pass at all. This will drastically cut down on the amount of spam i believe and it will bring the quality of posts up.

So, what do you guys think?

i couldn't agree more. limiting the smilies per post is perhaps the idea of the century.

hehe, that message is 174 characters long... not that hard to do, see?

I think it's a very interesting concept. I don't know the limitations of vB, but if it's possible, I think it would be good. I might throw this little suggestion out on the character length concept. How about this:

The number of characters necessary to make a post increase as the number of post go up. Example:

At 1-99 posts, there is no minimum necessary.
At 100-250 posts, there is a 20 character post minimum.
At 251-600 posts, there is a 30 character post minimum.
at 601-2000 posts, there is a 40 character post minimum.
at 2001+ posts, there is a 50 character post minimum.

Lets think about what that would do, as post count increases, so does the demand for more insightful as well as more wordy posts. It would also, hopefully, show the newbies what this board is all about, and that post whoring is simply childish behavior that everyone grows out of. :)

That's my 2 cents.

~Peace~

I think those are, quite possibly, the best suggestions I've seen so far.:)

That is really cool, though I think it would be rather difficult for Jordan to code.

Awesome ideas though. I like increasing limitations - it makes the community stronger.

I think so as well. If Jordan should decide to adopt this strategy, and has troubles coding it, do you know of anyone that he could go to for some help?

:Poke:

He relies on the vBulletin people for most of it I believe. They have a pretty broad reaching community. GTPlanet is probably one of the larger boards running vBulletin as well, and Jordan can use that as leverage.

"Silly human, try to get leverage on MEEEE?!?"

Perhaps it would be appropriate to launch a limited chat facility to go along with this 'restriction' - this would impact on the ability to chat over the forums (something of which I could be accused - ay caramba!)

You think that.....you mean you actually....NO, you didn't think I was implying that YOU be that helping hand in a time of need did you? :)

It would be interesting to see the lagestics behind implimenting a strategy like that.

[OK, back on track now.....]

An interesting concept indeed.

But what could be done to avoid this?

Example:

 <-----Single smilie post.

ahsajfhklasjhdfhdfajlfjhasfkjhaslkdfjhladf.

/\/\/\/\/\/\: minimum character requirement met.

After a couple of warnings, then suspension of your account....I don't think it would be a problem for very long. :)

Good idea, and very simple to implement. There is now a limit of 10 smilies/images per post.

This feature is already coded into the vBulletin 3.0, and I have had plans to implement it here since I first heard of it. :) In the meantime, I have just upped the posting time limit to 60 seconds per message, which should produce a similar effect.

That's great! So what's the ETA for v3.0 or would you have to kill me if you told me?

Oh, I wish I knew, but not even the developers are even going to put a month on the release date. I would say December, but that's just a guess...

edit: nevermind, i'm a tool... :dunce:

that's our man Jordan, always acting quicker than his shadow! the web needs more webmasters that are that efficient!

50 is a nice number.
Your post just now was 82. It allows you to still have single sentance replies, but not single word replies.

Are you getting ready to post a degrading, harsh, or downright stupid comment?
Think before you speak! GTPlanet is only as good as you make it.

Yes it is 32 characters.. and the point of telling us that is what exactly?

I think you need to do something about the Comedy forum too. When you have about 20 people do nothing but have a message of  there's a problem. You should make all the comedy posts closed to replies right off the bat. That'll cut down on a lot of useless posts.

I tend to agree that 50 is a tad too much,

Yes - 3 characters
Yes I believe that is correct - 29 characters

We'd have to look up some pretty big words to fill up the remaining 20 or so.
Maybe a limit of 30?

It's a difficult one. There are times when you just want to post an lol or rotfl smilie - especially in the comedy forum - because all you want to say is that you're amused by what's gone before. I suppose it's just another moderation issue.

Perhaps posts would need to be of a certain length to count towards post counts (until post counts become moot that is)

i think that minimum character limits and post cout **** is stupid, you're going to drive people away by being like nazis.

i have an idea, why don't the admins have to make at least 1 intelligent, and funny thread in the rumble strip every day? i'm sure that would improve the maturity level around here.

i think if the older, smarter, more mature members started harassing the immature members they would eventually get pissy and leave, which would improve the forum somewhat. it's difficult though, since alot of immature members have names with viper in them, it's hard to separate them.
