Hell, 400 dollars for a piece of gaming hardware like that, I dropped 650 dollars for a Graphics card now talk about over priced.

I paid $299.99 USD on release day! I believe it was october 26! what a day!
I remember the day vividly. I stood in line for over 12 hours, in the cold, windy rain, to get a PS2. Fun times.

I wont be doing it again, for the XBox360 or the PS3.

solid...were you one of the crazy people camped outside wal-mart?

Actually i did the same thing!!!!

I had me and buddies in the back of his truck at the front of the store...one of them worked at Pizza hut at the time..

so we were well fed!

I honestly think waiting for it was alot more fun than playing it...but Waiting for it was quite!!!! a good time....hilarious infact....

So...that would be very hard to top no matter how good the console was.

The first stop was Wal-Suck, but there was too many people. So, I went to Circuit City. Nobody was there. So I thought. The security people were kicking people off the property. I stayed. No "rent-a-cop" could scare me off. Then, a bunch of people started showing up after me. Somehow, they made a list who was in line, I was 6th. I didn't mind when I heard they had 20 PS2s to give out.

I had mine pre-ordered. I wasn't one of the first to pre-order, so I actually wasn't expecting to get one until a couple days after launch. But lo and behold, the phone rings.. "Yeah, we've got your PS2 here.." Off I go, into the wild blue.. um... mall.. stood in line for about three minutes, got my PS2, and left. Didn't even have to shop for games or anything, since I'd done all that the day before. :)

Here in SoCal, store employees were banned from buying PS2s. But, that didn't stop them from hiding them in the warehouse, calling up friends to come down to buy it for them. PS2s were very scarce around here, even after one month past Christmas. There were going for $1,200 in the local paper. I called, and they were selling because the guy didn't have one left.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, except those lying game stores, were taking reservations or pre-orders for the PS2s. One guy had a small riot on his hands at a local game store on launch day when he promised nearly 300 people they'd get a PS2 on launce day if they pre-paid $50. Sure enough, he didn't get a single PS2 in the shop unitl a week later.

Here, pre-orders for hot new items is a complete crap shoot. You might get one, but the odds are against you.

I ordered GT4 from Amazon a few days before release, it arrived the day the game was officially out.

Awesome, me too! I dont think I'll ever forget that. I got out of school and stood in line for 9 hours. It was actually inside at a 24-hour wal-mart.

Sad part is-- I only kept the system for a couple weeks or so then sold it because it was so disappointing. It was basicaly a Dreamcast with SLIGHTLY better GFX. I was expecting so, so much more [tech demos]. Learned my lesson.

Good part-- Retards were buying it for more than it was worth. So I made a hefty profit. :)

I remember getting my PS2. There were 5 of us who all showed up about 9 hours before midnight. The guy who showed up first bought a poker table, and chairs, and the walmart employee's let us play poker since we were waiting int he customer service area for so long. Eventually another 50+ people showed up in line, but only 20 PS2's were available. I was number 3 on the list, great times, and I plan on doing it again for the PS3, as well as pre-ordering one, just because it's in the spirit of fun.

Same here, I did it for Halo2 and GT4. I would do it again for XBOX360 and PS3.

Wal-mart only had 23 PS2s and I was #7. :)
I also lived across the street from wal-mart. I was so excited I was worried I'd die somehow before I got a chance to enjoy my PS2 lol... I was crazy about it.

I really hate to nit pick...but seriously, it just get's so old. The tech demo's really weren't too far fetched, they were pretty close actually to what is was capable of.

There is the "old mans face" and the Ridge Racer girl. Why those were so misleading, I don't know. But here are more games...that actually released...so call my crazy.

In comparison with the Ridge Racer girl, these, IMO, make it look a little bland:

I can go on and on, point is, you people keep blaming the system for not being "on par" when it is, in fact it's a very nice piece of hardware, what amazes me is that you NEVER BLAME the developers. NEVER.

Not once have I seen someone say "man..I know the PS2 is capable of so much more, but these damn developers are so lazy".

You ALL have it confused...you just don't know who the scape goat is, god forbid one of your precious developers make a bad game. The power is there, they never used it.

Edit: Also, to go a little farther, did any of you even BOTHER to pay attention to the entire press conference or any of the numbers?

They said 75 Million Poly's with no effects, around 13 million with. The face of the old man ALONE was 100,000 poly's, RIGHT THERE IT TELLS YOU.

I know I'm not a genius, but I'm sure I can realize, if they used 100K poly's on the face, they would only have about 12.9M poly's left for use on the body (which if done in proportion to the face would be about 300K poly's) So if each character was 400+poly's, and there were 5 characters on screen, you have 2.1 million poly's, with another 11 million or so left for the level.

Now let's consider all of the lighting and texturing used on the old mans face, and use that in proportion, there would be no way to use 12 million poly's, it would be a lot closer to 7 million poly's. You just have to look into it, and it's pretty easy to understand, they even give you all of the specs of the face and processing power used...I dunno why it was so far fetched.

First two look too good still for the PS2 today. TTT was OK-- not that great since soul calibur was out already. And some of the early TTT screens looked better than the final game. Silent hill was nowhere near a launch title.

That's Tekken 5 which visually is far better than any soul calibur out to date (even on Xbox).

Sould Calibur 3 might prove to be interesting though, visually at least.

As far as "no where near a launch title", if you are seriously expecting anything that will push the system from a launch title you are looking in the wrong place for ANY console.

WHY...might I ask, will you NEVER say anything in reference to the mediocre Xbox launch titles that looks on par, or even worse than, PS2 games of their time? Xbox was not visually amazing, nor was it any where near "steps up" from PS2 when it launched.

Do you see the points I'm getting at? You guy's keep bashing the PS2 for reasons that are unbecoming of a fan of videogames, and more becoming of fanboys and graphic whores.

If you dedicate most of the power to polygons the ps2 could do better than even that. Thats very good for only 100k.

Launch titles can/do not define what the system is capable of. Pretty much all of the first gen Xbox 360 games will only use 1 core. So imagine what the future will hold. Sega Saturn had 2 identical CPU's but 98% of the games only used 1.First gen PS2 games barely utilized the Vu0 and Vu1 (kinda like cell's spe's) processors so games used 30-40% of the systems power. So no, launch titles didnt come close to a tech demos.

I still have my first 2 PS2 games, Tekken TT and RRV.

You ***** so much, its rediculous. Read my ****ing post agian. I was disappointed at launch; it wasnt a vast improvement over the DC and the tech demos were still no where to be seen on my tv.
IF you reply, make it short.

I love how you tell me what to do like you have authority or knowledge to shut me up.

Do you even understnad the purpose of a technical demonstration? It's to show developers and consumers what the system is capable of at it's full potential, to show off all of the features that the system has.

Not for them to underwhelm you with sub par demonstrations and leave out all the key notes.

I have read your post, no need to read it again, I take it in once, it's what good readers do, they read and comprehend, you are not capable of such :)

You expect top dollar games a launch, and it's never going to happen. Why? Let me break it down so you can understand, since you're simple.

Developers do not shell out large amounts of money for development on video games at launch simply because they can. Why would you invest more money in a console when the user base is still small? You wouldn't. Developers will NOT sink tons of money into a console to max out it's capabilities (thus increasing development costs) only to get minimum sales on a console that does not have a large user base yet. Hence, we see sub par launch titles. It just happens. We will never see anything ground breaking on any hardware a luanch, this is extremely easy logic to comprehend, and hopefully you will grasp it this time.

So, now that you have a firm understanding of why we have technical demonstrations, and why we have sub par games at launch, hopefully it can change your view point from that of an average ignorant consumer (ignorant meaning you lack the information necessary to make a good judgement, so you make one based on an assumption), into a wiser consumer, who understands the workings of the industry and will, in the future, be more inclined to understand what you see :).

http://www.firingsquad.com/features/art_of_tech_demo/

There is some reading for you, to further understand technical demonstrations.

Again, it's not a tech demo for them to promise you that all the launch titles will look this good. It's a tech demo to DEMONSTRATE the TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES of the console.

Please...please....understand now.

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

Tha_con have a lot of good points about launch titles. 👍

But I think this time we will get good stuff this time compared to the previous gen's launch titiles. :O

I know theres over 100 titles or over 150 titles in the making for PS3, which is good news as long as the prices don't go over £50 for most of the games. Then I be happy.

Okay, I have a wager. If PS3 is over $399 US I'm going to eat an entire article out of Game Informer...and I will record it and post it on the internet. I am that confident the system will retail at $399 maximum in the US.

What if it was $399.99 or $400?

:P you know what I mean, lol.

399.99. If it's higher than that, I will eat all 10 pages of the Hideo Kojima interview in this months Gameinformer.
