I was quoting that...and with new diesels they're alot more clean burning due to all the emissions cutting they're given. I was quoting what Clarkson said in general. I'll ask again to please try and not take post out of context.

I wasn't taking anything out of context. I'm struggling to see what context your post had, for one thing.

In all honesty your post didn't make a great deal of sense, but what I assumed you were talking about was the TG test between Prius and M3 where the M3 got better fuel consumption. Maybe you weren't and were talking about something completely different, but your use of the term "proper car" was completely ambiguous.

If you were referring to diesels, then as I said anyway - it's completely situation dependant. The best modern diesels can achieve a little more MPG on the highway than something like a Prius, but the gap has closed massively, and hybrids are typically better in town, not least because ones like the Prius can run on electricity only for a mile or two.

And again, modern diesels are much cleaner than they used to be, but they're still not as clean as modern hybrids. And I'm not just referring to CO2, I'm talking everything that comes out of the tailpipe.

I actually think the Prius is a really cool looking car, mostly from a functionality point of view. The thing is fantastic aerodynamically. My dream long-distance cruiser would probably be a Prius with all the hybrid bullcrap taken out and replaced by a normal-sized 4-cylinder and more fuel tanks. That thing would go for ages, get damn near the same mileage, but not be totally slow as ass.

It'd struggle. The electric motor tends to offer quite a bit of assistance. To even match the performance you'd have to use a bigger engine and you'd see drops in efficiency the bigger you went.

Put it this way - there are no regular gasoline cars that are as efficient as a Prius at the moment. That's not a coincidence - it tells you that it isn't possible without the hybrid drivetrain.

Diesels will probably never make the cut here stateside.

For one, the price of diesel is always more, and people always put more stock at the price per gallon than the actual mileage they can achieve.

If VW released a diesel hybrid, then they can perhaps take the hybrid fight to Toyota.

So far the Leaf and the Volt are ants to Toyota, and not really breaking a sweat over it.

I'd still like to see an experiment where they get rid of all the electro-crap, save 300+ pounds, then put in a Corolla's engine and trans into that aerodynamic Prius body and see what she'll do on the highway.

Better yet, the Hyundai's engine, whatever that car is called.

I like the tesla thats the only cool looking electric car but that's a copy of a lotus

I think what your looking for is you assumed and were wrong, nothing bad about be wrong. I can use a quote from a person in a way I see fit and I know and anyone else knows that when you drive properly you tend to save alot more gas. Again I never said diesels are cleaner than modern hybrids in C02, but they're not nearly as bad as some cars and trucks. My point was that there are other cars that are just as good or better at the moment than hybrids so I don't see the big deal with them. Also how did my post not make sense...especially seeing as you came to this conclusion that I was talking about some M3 vs. Prius MPG test that top gear conducted, even though I never hinted nor used that test in any context. So really I see the failure to understand my post on your quick assumption.

Well, the Roadster is now out of production, so what about the Model S?
Diesels will probably never make the cut here stateside.
Oh, but they have, & for a while now, predominantly by the Germans. Volkswagen is releasing the 2012 Passat diesel here, whilst BMW has had the 335d on sale for a while now. And then there's Mercedes who offer diesel versions of their SUVS as well as hybrid models of their S & ML-classes.

The only issue with Mercedes & BMW is that the cars are generally out of the general public's range. Volkswagen, however, is hoping to change that with the $26,000 Passat that is aiming to put a dent in the Japanese hybrids.

Yeah, if diesel cars had "made the cut" in the States recently, I missed it. Sure, they've been around here for long time.

People in California seem to be making a shift. I'm starting to see more people buying new VW TDi's over new Prius'.

I have never seen "cool" and "Prius" in the same sentence. Rarely in the same paragraph even.

It's horrendous. I would prefer a smashed Fiat Cinquencento over that :yuck:

Why is everyone bashing the prius?

When i was looking for a car i was thinking of getting a prius cause it is one of the best hybirds that were around at the time.

Many people need to get over this Clarkson way of thinking and realise these cars are going to be more common and the electric or hydrogen are going to replace them.

The V8s of today are going to be found in a collectors garage soon.

The new prius has issues in my view mainly the center speedometer and its plastic interior look, otherwise it is a nice car.

You know, I don't mind the Prius, either. I've been in one; it's not bad. If you only need to fill the car up once a month or month-and-a-half (plus the gas tank isn't that big, so filling it up all the way is not a problem), I'd buy it.

I just don't like the look of this concept car. I'll wait and see what the production model looks like.

My point was that there are other cars that are just as good or better at the moment than hybrids so I don't see the big deal with them.

Define "as good or better".

MPG? Sure, some cars are better than cars like the Prius. CO2? Barely, as diesels naturally produce more CO2 per gallon burned than hybrids. Other emissions? No. About 6 or 7 of the top ten cleanest cars in the UK are hybrids. And that's the UK, where we have plenty of small-engined gasoline cars competing for that title.

My point is that if you want a car that's not just good on MPG but produces very few emissions of any sort, hybrids are still the best vehicles available (excluding EVs) - whether people like or dislike hybrids, the numbers don't lie.

Also how did my post not make sense...especially seeing as you came to this conclusion that I was talking about some M3 vs. Prius MPG test that top gear conducted, even though I never hinted nor used that test in any context. No, it's because your writing style is incredibly difficult to understand.

Shoving more words into a sentence =/= a better post.
Getting to the point = a better post.

I deny the fact that you call it "The cool Prius". You'll still hear "I'm gay" as it flies by you.

Toyota is trying too hard to paraphrase the thoughts and impressions by the people who dislike this heap of junk. I mainly hate this car because I hear too much about how eco-friendly it is, and how much miles to the gallon you can get because it's a hybrid. Plus, by the fact that people are telling me over the TV commercial that it's best to drive hybrids, and to save the wildlife by driving hybrids. Al Gore's behind this.

If anyone has ever seen commercials for the peeus, they're all magical and spiritual with dancing flowers, happy Mr. Sunshine, joyful and colorful, etc. Hippies must have created those commercials, and asked a guy off the streets to narrate for them, while they get more ideas for future Prius commercials by going back to their VW Bus and get high. "Woah dude! Lets have rainbows and unicorns and Janis Joplin rise from the dead driving a Prius."

If you have seen the South Park episode about hybrids, you would understand and turn your good thoughts about the Prius all the way around, and locking it there.

I have seen that episode, but I don't get my opinions from south park. I think it's sad that you do. And when you said "peeus", was that a typo, or a stupid irrelevant pun. Your arguments are nothing to me, I am only influenced by people who can come up with a valid argument to save their life.

Yes, because I totally go to South Park for all my facts...

It was a typo. But in my terms in this situation, it's unique name calling to see who catches on. :sly:

At least they were correct on the hybrid drivers smelling their farts and creating smog with their hybrids. It's a turn around on global warming. It's not normal cars. It's hybrids that are causing global warming. :sly:

You're missing the big picture: Those lattes don't make themselves!

You are just making yourself sound like more and more of a putz. If Hybrids are causing global warming, why were they made in the first place? Take the time to think things through before you blurt it out you dunce.

Who is the dunce? The person who couldn't make it more obvious that he was fooling around if he wrapped his post in [/sarcasm] tags or the person who takes the post at face value and complains about it anyways?

The former.

So... you agree that he who couldn't make it more obvious he's joking is the dunce? Glad we could come to an agreement.
Dude, he said hybrids cause global warming because the owners fart more than non-hybrid owners. If you seriously can't tell he was joking around and feel the need to passionately defend hybrids from such a heinous allegation to the point of throwing out insults, you don't belong on the internet.
