I was just looking at Dell business servers. They generally don't run for more than $2,000...
The only thing I changed was the setting that checked for duplicate attachments. Scanning all of our attachments to make sure they didn't already exist was putting a huge load on the server and the database. Nevertheless, I just purchased a brand new Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz server that will be our new home soon.Originally posted by milefile
Today it is much better. Did you change anything?

I keep getting multiple email notifications of new posts. This morning I had something like 36 emails all from GTP and I'm only subscribed to three or four threads.
This is a separate issue and it would be best in another thread. But, anyway, have you logged in and out of the site several times during while receiving the emails?Originally posted by milefile

I'm really not too sure yet. The site itself shouldn't experience any downtime, because I only one DNS server needs to update, rather than every single one in the world. If I pull it off, the only downtime will be the closing of the forums while I export, transfer, and then import the forum database from the old to new server.Originally posted by Pako
Wow!
I actually uploaded a file yesterday, and it uploaded extreemly fast!
How much down-time are you expecting (if any) during the switch?

No, it simply uploads a second copy of it.Jordan, what happens now if we do upload duplicates it over writes it?
Thanks, Giles. I can see where that would work, but I don't have enough IP's to throw around like that. But I'm not worried and I think I already have a good idea of how I'm going to go about the move. Because both my new and old server are with the same hosting company, who's DNS servers I use (and do not run my own DNS), I only have to update the IP address in their name servers which should only take 5 hours to update at the most.Jordan, you should be able to build the new server as a test server, then switch it and the outgoing server's IP addresses. It will entirely depend upon what Rackshack will let you do of course, but if I were you I would do this (IP addresses are examples only):
Old GTP server address: 192.168.1.1
This continues to run as normal.
New GTP server address: 192.168.1.2
Build the new server with Linux and Apache as desired, and install vB. Copy all the config data and the database from the old server to the new server. Perform some tests to ensure that the new server is operating as required.
Once the tests are complete, dump all the currently-logged-in users off the Old server, and set up a 'holding page'. Copy all the relevant data across to the new server again (because the live site will have changed while you were testing the new server).
Once this is complete, change the old server's IP address to some new third value (say 192.168.1.3). Change the new server's IP address to the address of the old server (192.168.1.1), then GTP will be back on the new server.
The key here is that there's no alteration to the DNS, so you reduce potential downtime from 24-48hrs (DNS propagation time) to the amount of time it takes to do the local IP configuration, which should be about 2 minutes, plus the time you spend with the holding page while you're copying the database.
I'll give you any help I can. Feel free to contact me privately if you wish any assistance at all before/during/after the move.

Well, of course... moving a site to another server doesn't entail selling a domain name...Originally posted by F1man
Will the URL stay the same?
Yes, nothing will change, the forums might just have to be closed for an hour or so. If things don't go so swell, the entire site will be lost and everything will be gone.Originally posted by F1man

Worst case scenario - the server could mutate into a giant robot that devours the universe. Bummer.
