Project R

-----
UPDATE JUNE 2011

This thread is now over a year old and running off what started as modifying a Gamepod cockpit almost 3 years ago.
Recently my constant buying audio/tactile equipment for this has ended and "Project R" is now currently really, honestly a W.I.P :)
Many changes and ideas have been considered, dropped, upgraded but really what was once an idea for a decent d.i.y cockpit has changed into a MONSTER!

People are welcome to read and see how the thread and ideas changed.

------

I have been collecting parts/components and hardware with changing the design of it for the best part of 18 months.
GT5 is what is inspiring me to do it but also my love for other racing games. This "Project R" as it is now nicknamed is going to be quite extensive project with a difference.

A high standard is a must for it and its one reason I perhaps am a little too judgemental of some others on the forums. Whilst I have the utmost respect for members like what "Chillicoke" have achieved and some other guys upcoming work which looks to be excellent as well. I want to go to a higher level of immersion as Ive owned several racing frames like Playseat/GamePod in the past and I dont find VR3, Renn Sport fill my needs.

Over the many past months it has beomce more extensive, incorporating more an more hardware and certainly beyond what I had first envisiged. Differences in my own compared to many peoples frame based designs are that I want to introduce something a bit akin to a deluxe acrade unit in looks and size. I also want it to look kinda carish to the point it will have some car influence parts and different to just a wooden or metal frame.

This thread will be a guide/progress report on whats being implemented and later will include photos of it in progress and being built.
People here can enjoy the ride feel free to get involved and by all means give feedback or criticisim as now is the time for me to soon begin putting the drawings into materials.

Updating!!!!

Some Components and parts will be listed here:

Styling & Layout
The concept has grown and expanded over the many months of planning.
The cockpit will be placed on a raised wooden base platform approx 3-4" high.

This base platform is going to be approx 80" long x 60" wide
I will have this comprising of two parts, mainly the seat section and the monitor section which can be seperated or joined together.
The reason for this is getting it into its final destination and allowing the monitor section to seperate will allow the option of either triple monitors or projector gaming to be enjoyed.

Below is a very early few pics from testing and getting ideas on the size and positions.
The two spoilers are Subaru WRX spoilers. The rear one will be raised at the back of the seat.
A metal chrome frame will be used to create a surround shape in a layout that resembels a kart.
I envisage "Chrome Metal & Black" theme to be used through the whole project and parts will be purchased to tie in with this theme.

The chrome surround will utilise "Chrome Plated Shopfittings" These are also being used for the uprights for the monitors along with 32mm chrome piping.
Ive always thought the VR3 looked fantastic and how it smartly had the PS3 at the back of the monitors. I will employ this for each of the three screens.
I have other metal chrome elements that will be used to support the rear spoiler, seat and wheel sections that are coming from a company that specialise in manufacturing chrome legs for coffee tables and kitchens etc. These will be sturdier at 60 mm for added strength.

I understand its hard getting much impression from this but it might give some indication.

Car Influence
As noted earlier I want to create a racey car parts look. The appearance is a important factor for me and one that is proving to be costly.

I have purchased a few car bits on auction sites over a period of a year.
The initial plan was to incorporate a car dashboard and I even purchased one but its now something Im for dropping from the project as it didnt seem to fit in well with triple monitors.
Other components that have been purchased and do look to make the final build are....

Car Parts Purchased:

Subaru WRX Spoilers
Passat LED Style Brake Lights
Brake Light Sensor
Chrome Exhaust Tailpipes
Escort Cosworth Air Intakes

Cockpit buttons that many PC sims use may be added and also a rev counter just again for looks with space permitting it could be included.

Seating
Having had past experience in owning a Playseat Evo I soon became aware of the lack of ultimate comfort on long sessions.
The GamePod racing frame I have uses an excellent "Monaco" bucket seat but I wanted more stylish looks and even more comfort.
Both VR3 and the RSC seem to use better seats than most cockpits but againthey were not to the full quality of proper competition seats.

The seat I purchased was quite a hard decision as it was rather expensive but it really gave a figure hugging support for that complete snug feel and its looks appealed to me.
I will attach this seat to a universal set of seat runners but these will be bolted to a board that then has a Buttkicker bolted onto that. Electric adjustment motors were considered for the seating but in the end I felt it wasnt worth the money for little benifit.

Video
I decided early on that the best way to experience most racing games was using triple screens.
I wanted something not overly expensive and had originally got 3x22" monitors but found them too small so decided to upgrade to 24" size.
They had to be gloss black and with a fast response time.

Ive been enjoying FM3 in this way and its a great addition to the racing as many PC sim racers would agree.
GT5 has been reported on these forums to be compatible with multiple screens or to include triple screen support just like FM3.
It is mainly for these two games this decision was based.

Having owned a projector I can also understand the fun aspect of a large screen as well.
For me having a cockpit design that relied on triple monitors was important, but then what happens if your playing a racing game that does not support triple screens.
Particulary on console of course most games will be single screen and that is a flaw I found with the "Fanatec Renn Sport Cockpit" your stuck then with a single screen at a measly 24"

From this point I had decided that the design of the cockpit had to incorporate a design that easily allowed for the 3x screens to be removed quickly to enjoy single screen games
on a projector setup using my 80" screen also.

GT5 is a very large inspiration, reason for this cockpit and although I can say hand on heart I never fully completed any GT game this may come across as strange. I am not a complete GT fanatic but it is a game I expect very much enjoyment from. Therefore from release I will be ready for the multiscreen option utilising 3x PS3 systems.
As yet I find it rather uncomfortable that this has not been completely confirmed by P Digital or indeed if it will also work with the PS3 Eye "head tracking" in triple screen mode.
Regardless of what is possible I want to enjoy the game at its best and may one day upgrade to 3D projection.

I recently sold a Panasonic AE2000 1080p projector that I owned to help fund the rest of this project.
Therefore the projector I will revert to is one I bought previously and never sold at the time. Glad now I kept it and although only 720p it is excellent for gaming.
This is the AX100 which has been out a few years now and 2nd hand projectors are something Id recommend to people to consider for their cockpits.

Audio
This is the area that often I find on many forums people are not utilising as well as possible for their sim frames.
You can have your VR3, your RSC cockpits and as fancy as they are these will do nothing to help enchance how your racing games feel.
If people continuely spend large sums of money on FFB steering wheels and expensive pedals it is clear they take the importance of control and feedback from their games rather seriously.

Over the past year I have seen only a few other members here on GTP discuss or purchase "Transducers" to incorporate into their racing frames.
Buttkicker is probably one of the best known names for these devices. In the UK and perhaps Europe they are not so well known but Disney/AMC theatres and a host of other Music Studio professional applications use them.

Their seems to be a real lack of general interest or indeed awareness of how these products combined with audio can further increase that control and feedback from a game.
Its something I want to cover more in detail but bottom line is these devices let you feel bumps in the road, the tarmac the engine. Combined with audio they create a seemless sensation and add greatly to the immersion or the feeling of being in a car within the game.

Many games even including FM3 have bumps in the road that you can feel but without these devices you can only partially hear them as a thud at best.

Darin & Sean @ SRT have Reviewed These In The Past
See Here

350uw0p.jpg

I will be using my Yamaha home theatre AV system for my general audio.
However for the cockpit to utilise the "feel sensation" it will need various additional hardware.
I discovered that the Buttkicker BKA 300 is a great little addition to a cockpit and it was one of the members here that owned one which got me interested in them.

Since having one for some time now and enjoying it. I have since tested it in various places of the cockpit frame I currently use. Yes it can rumble right through the seat/racing frame but like an explosion it has a hard hitting effect in the centre and this weakens as it pans out down through the rest of the racing frame.

What this means in sensation is that indeed it kicks your butt however it doesnt quite fall through as well into your feet and hands. Now in a real car you will feel such bumps not just in your seat but of course in your hands and feet also. So the object for me was to test my BKA 300 unit just for pedals and just for the wheel sections to try to emulate a real car. This proved to work excellently if with 300 watts from the BKA 300 was a bit too strong at times. I knew instantly then that I had to consider adding smaller and less powerful Buttkicker units so that the effect could be felt but most importantly the volumes could seperatly be controlled for the Seat/Wheel/Pedal sections. That way I could have full control over their strength individually and seperately from the power/volume of the subwoofers. In gaming this means you get the rumble of the engine, the bumps of the road and basically any bass enchanced sound effects from games now being felt not just in the seat but in feet, hands and of course the butt. Depending on the volume required it will be possible to really achieve a high level of immersion from this configuration.

2rcsy0n.jpg

Its true that it does add like a 4D sensation as you could swear your brain is fooled into thinking for example driving over a rumble strip on the left of a track that indeed it feels like its coming from the left hand side of your cockpit. I assume what your eyes see onscreen, your ears hear on the left speakers combined with the feeling from the transducers makes our brains believe it to be so.

Ive yet to test all these new audio components together and I do feel the dual 12" subs are perhaps indeed overkill but they will look great behind the seat and I know full well that these Buttkickers like a good cinema work best when combined with actual audible bass. Again its that conception of what you see, hear and feel and no doubt these dual subs will offer bass in spades.

Audio Components:
Sony Xplod 2x 1300W 12" Subs in contained box.
1x Skytec 1500 watt 4ohm amplifier (power 2x subwoofers)
1x Skytec 480 watt 4ohm amplifier (power 2x mini LFE transducers)
1x Buttkicker BKA 300 - 300 watt amplifier & transducer (seat)
2x Mini LFE Buttkicker Transducers (1x Wheel 1x Pedals)

Both Wheels Purchased!
Control Option 1 Turbo S

Wheels being used will be the fantastic Fanatec PWTS with Clubsport Pedals.
I intend to inverse these as I showed was possible last year.
Recently I have emailed "Armin" @ Fanatec as I want to purchase a 2nd footplate and extra square pedal.
Oh Thomas if your reading, I would much appreciate if you can get me these.

Control Option 2 - Modified G25
Having seen the current trend "Chillicoke" started with modifying G25/G27
I have recently decided to also go with modifying my Logitech G25 to using a full sized wheel and the JPelectrix brake mod.
These are yet to arrive and "Chilli" I will purchase one of your adapters soon.

21enswx.jpg

The current design idea is to allow each set of pedals to be inverted but both will be easily interchangable.
They will be built onto their own seperate platforms. I have to finalise this in design but each pedal section will use large knobs for bolting to the floor of the main cockpit.
When needed it will just require disconnecting and loosening/tightening and lifting to swap over.

G25 Load Cell Brake
Have it ordered, Id like to hear some comments from people on how good this is?
erk0gw.jpg

Wheel for G25 mod ordered...
Momo "Race" 330cm Wheel

Handbrake & Shifters
At present Ive not been impressed with the quality of either Fanatec or Logitech shifters.
Primarily I play though with paddle shifters. With however the announcement of Fanatec bringing Clubsport editions I will await to see how good those are and possibly consider them.
With no release its wise to assume these will be long long long time away.

More to follow........

Sounds interesting 👍

And what a seat.. I might have to get one of those. We'll see.. 👍

Of course making a cockpit of your own usually means spending hours upon hours getting ideas.

Some things that have influenced mine

Looks good, but I'd go with the G25 over the Fanatec any day.

Have you used the Fanatec?

I've never owned a G25, and only ever used one once, but I love the Turbo S from Fanatec.

Why would you recommend the G25 over it?

Appreciate interest shown...

Dracwolley/versapak
Come on guys no need for wheel wars in here... 👎

As reported I will use BOTH as BOTH are to a high standard and needed for the BEST in what a console sim can offer.
I like the idea of a full sized wheel hence the modified G25 but of course need the Turbo S also for X360 games. Besides I love the drift mode and those lit up lights!

NickA
Spoilers are both 2005 I think...
Front one is angled and reversed.
Rear one will be off the floor when built approx 3/4 up the height of the seat.
Im looking to connect the brake light of the rear spoiler with the rear brake lights Ive purchased.

Heres an idea used for inspiration

I purchased these on auction site, they should arrive this week. (update photo later)
Have a thing for red led lights...

I have used g25 before and fanatec feels much more real.

Who likes the Sparco wheel and pedals, any comments?
Im mulling over it at the moment.

With regard to the 2 wheels and pedal sets.

Do you have a simple solution for swapping from one to the other.
I was having trouble coming up with something simple, until I found that I don't need to.

The pedal sets seemed be impossible to have a "within seconds" solution, especially with an enclosed pod.
Which what I want to do, and it looks as if yours will be also.

Very exciting project and quite elaborate in regard to tech, with buttkicker and sound intricacy.

Thanks for comments...

All that is needed is to build two identical in size platforms for each set of pedals. Lets call them "Pedal Trays". These will both be inverted and can have their own pedal configurations or positioning with possible angle adjustments as well. So I build a Logitech and a Fanatec "Pedal Tray". For now just imagine a L shaped wooden base with chrome tubing to support the pedals.

The main base of the cockpit will allow each set of "Pedal Trays" to mount onto a wooden platform thats connected to a set of seat runners. Lets call this a "Base Tray". Its this platform that could easily allow for 4x bolt/nut locking handles/knobs to tighten the "Pedal Tray" being used onto the "Base Tray". Once done you have a set of pedals locked tight to the main base and as its on a set of seat runners this can in turn lock in place and allow easy back/forward positioning in relation to the user and seat positioning.

For the wheels something similar like a seat runner will be considered again to allow the wheels to move forward and back therefore using a "Wheel Tray".
Ive just had confirmation of my Fanatec Wheel Clamp being ready for dispatch. I am considering using it for easy positioning of the wheel angle and it removes easy too meaning it will be quick and simple to change over wheels. One concern is its locking nut may come down too far though as its primarily used for a desk and I cant be certain till I test it.

My own cockpit wont be closed in at the footwell though. No chance as the "Pedal Trays" will be part of the look and I want them to be seen.

I hadn't meant to start a wheel war, just giving my opinion.

I owned a DFP as my first wheel. I went over to a friend's house (he had the turbo S) and used the wheel all day on GT5P. I loved it.

A few days later I visited my cousin, who had a G25 after a while. After I used it, it felt different from the fanatec, but in my opinion, that difference influenced my descision to stay with logitech. It just felt... well, like I said, different, but somehow, better.

Just an opinion. And another issue for me: Porsche branding? Really? I think logitech's wheels are so much classier.

Again, not trying to start a flamewar, so please don't think of it that way.

No problems...

Id rather keep discussions to questions, peoples thoughts, ideas or the project in general is all.

I actually wasn't trying to start one either.

I had only asked the question initially, as I truly just wanted to know what things swayed you toward the G25 instead.

Again, my experience with the G25 was having only used it once. I was actually saving up to buy a G25 to replace my DFP when the Turbo S was announced, and being that I game pretty heavily on 360, I went that route instead.

I have seen a few people mention the distaste for the Porsche branding, but I actually love it. I just like that it is modeled after a real wheel, and I think it actually does look pretty darn classy. I would have loved it branded and styled from Ferrari or Lamborghini as well.

Update: One Step Closer :)

Back again and just ordered almost £200 of chrome shop fittings.
I cant tell you guys how many dozens of drawings/plans and ideas have been done to get to this point of actually now having a design in general completed and ordering materials needed.
Im not for showing off the design ideas like guys do in other threads, lol. Im going to just let it trickle along and through the stages keep a photo log of updates.
This way my own thread will keep you guys guessing, wondering how its all going...

Now how am I going to use all this?
2v34lg2.jpg

The above covers the majority of the oval tubing for the surround and 9 metres of 32mm round tubing needed.
This will be used to create the base platform chrome surround and the dual upright posts that will support each 24" monitor and PS3 attached to the back.

Some more 32mm round tubing will need to be purchased for the pedal tray sections but I need to concentrate work on these monitor support stands.
Their positioning is very important and needs to be accurate with using triple screens.

Good ideas for swapping, just the leads will be a little bit fiddly. If your not having an enclosed pod then all is good.
The "keep us guessing" format your using, is quite amusing. Good work. :D

That idea of using seat runners for the pedals is actually marvellous. :) Have to think about that more. Also, I see it's already use in VPP rigs 👍

More good ideas to come later....
Take note though as some seat runners only lock at one side so get a set that locks on both runners, it will be more stable.

Awaiting any comments/info regards the G25 Load Cell Brake Mod.
Any owners found they like it and how does it feel in GT5?

Appreciate any help or feedback.

Sometimes We Get Lucky!

As mentioned at the start I had purchased a car dashboard, it was actually from a Citreon Saxo, a small car.
My idea then was cut its dash in two parts having mainly only the speedo section attached to the racing frame centre console.

Due to making fitting or changing of steering wheels difficult, and getting the dash to fit in with the triple monitors I decided to not bother using it.
I still had a desire for a Speedo/Rev counter on my sim frame. Yes I know it wont actually work but again its part of my requirements that my sim has an arcade unit and car parts influenced appearance.

Well a week ago while browsing an auction site I came across this Lotus Speedo from an Elise.
It was listed as looking like new condition but was being sold as seen. It could be a dud basically however not that I needed it to work.
So I kept an eye on the listing and look what I got for the price of a McDonalds

2mq540h.jpg

Above one seems similar and gives a clearer view.
This will be quite small so maybe I can incoprporate it into my centre console/dash section without too much trouble.
I think it may be possible to have it on a bracket to fit in behind a wheel rim and just above the G25 or Fanatec casing.

Influence Or Chasing Past Dreams Of Inner Childhood?
Portrush a local Seaside Town (Famous For the North West 200 Motorbike Road Races) always had great arcades in the 80s/90s

Oh that Outrun dash again...

Still remember the "vroom vrooom" when inserting the pound coins!

Important Layout Factor/Issues

One of the biggest issues I have is in getting the design to be able to accomodate the removable monitor section for when gaming on projector.
Ive not seen a cockpit design that includes 3way monitors but has a method of easily detaching them and still operate with minimal fuss.

Many designs have the centre or main monitor roughly above the pedals.
So how do I have this section with the monitors detach yet not effect the pedals and the upright frame section for the wheel to be supported?
This has been a bit of a headache.

This was one reason for going with the "seat runners" idea in mounting the pedal section.
It means the main support for the pedals can be attached to the larger seat section of the base and not the removable monitor section.
With this in place, I can simply extend the pedals further out using the "seat runners" to below the centre monitor position/distance where they normally are located on sim frames.

Heres some recent measuring and layout testing.
Im a bit concerned with the length both sections are when combined at almost 90"
This is more than originally intended although its needed, ensuring the main section has the pedal and wheel uprights yet also contain the 12" subs and rear wing at the back.

I saw this and thought you might be interested.

Yeah Ive seen that before, pretty cool what can be done with PC Sims.
Although as my cockpit is going to be used mostly for consoles it of course wouldnt work.

Some more parts should start arriving in the next few days...

More teaser pics - Some bits ordered arrived today.
Sorry for photos with camera phone and currently all this is just being done in a storeroom of a business.
Was shocked by how heavy the subwoofer box and subs will be. The amplifer is also quite heavy.
The subs look massive as you can see compared to the Subaru wing.

Take note this is still all just messing about with sizes, placement is going to be different on the build.

5aeses.jpg

Spoiler just resting on sub cabinet. Rear spoiler will be higher and supported by 60 mm chrome tubing
Sub box will be angled and a large curved swept wing will encompass these sweeping right down to beside the seat.

2qdonrb.jpg

I cant wait to get this all fired up and feel the bass this can produce and with the 3 buttkickers its sure to rock!
Care is going to be needed to try and control vibrations and avoid rattling.

ngyu8o.jpg

Lotus Elise Speedo is really neat and small. It will be perfect size for above body of G25 or PWTS
The subs that arrived were 1000w but I think these will do fine. Skytec amp is 1500w. The 2nd amp will look the same but a less powerful one is going to be ordered for the mini LFE Buttkickers.
I may place these amplifers into the bottom rear of the base platform.

m8l3pi.jpg

Small glimpse of ideas I have for the "pedal tray" upright, early days yet.
Hopefully I can accomplish that VR3 expensive appearance as I am considering a black acrylic finish for the base instead of just painted wood.

2nrjb4y.jpg

Noitce how the access to the seat will be possible. The main base section will be about 2" wider than the widest part of the 32mm oval frame.
It will be easy to step up onto the base and place a foot in these recessed sections.
Ive still yet to decide on the final materials and design of the base. Need to keep the weight down. Although I can say it is going to have nice underlighting.

4lgeir.jpg

More of the 32mm oval frame arrived. Now I can mess about to ensure I get accurate sizes for the layout
Question is how am I going to get this all joined together mmmm, eh...

24erg4l.jpg

Cosworth bonnet vents - one of the car theme styling items I just had to have.
These with the spoilers will be sprayed black but in the end you will see how they will give the cockpit character.

*New Items Ordered Today
1x Chillicokes wheel adapter for my G25
3x PS3 stands including a elegant white light surround
wcbtec.jpg

Insight into monitor section....
The cockpit frame will support 3x PS3 consoles on 3x dual 32mm chrome tubing uprights. These will include a small shelf.
A futher chrome section will be added to support the 24" monitor. Cables will be hidden as best possible within the inside of the 32mm tubing.

It will look like no other triple screen stand/configuration seen before.

Cool concept.

You definitely got a lot of cash to burn :D

You should invest on something like frex hydrolics (seat), thats if it can be
worked with the PS3... can it?

or, if you have a few thousand, invest on a simulator by
force dynamics :D

What is making this project perhaps quite costly is the hardware more than the actual sims base/frame materials. The audio components being used for simulaton enchancement is about £1000. Thats quite a lot of course but then I will easily be able to sit in this cockpit remove the triple screen section and enjoy other games. Something like a FPS is also going to be excellent with bass in fire arms and grenades really being felt.

I wouldnt spend the money on motion control as I think it could become uncomfortable after a while, besides being too noisy and too costly and yes really limited to a PC. D-Box is nice but again expensive.

Seems I wont be able to say till the end but I dont think the materials used on the cockpit will exceed by too much what I would pay for a RennSport or similar alternative. To date the seat has been the most expensive single component.

Did you look at LED (backlit) screens at all?
Are you definitely going for the E2407HDS then?
I'd really love an LED screen for my setup but I need it to have vesa for mounting onto my cockpit and most of the LED monitors I've seen so far don't allow for wall mounting! (Unless I went for a 32in Samsung B6000 series which is too big anyway!)

Best of luck with your project!!

P.S: Are you a Subaru driver then seeing as you have a couple of spoilers lying around?
