In a word "yes" it will work. Follow this link;

http://www.dvdconsole.com/chip.htm

Part way down the page you will find details for the Ripper 2, which amongst other details lists the following: "DVD9 compatible"

Better get one ordered then eh!!!

👍
Thank you very much for searching to help me 👍
I have checked my chip with the movie Lord of The Ring: The two towers (DVD9) and it has worked so will it work GT4 (which i have already ordered) 100% on my ps2 ?

Wether or not your ps2 can play a dvd9 movie has nothing to do regarding your ability to play a dvd9 game. If you want to know if your ps2 will play a dvd9 game go rent one or two of the following games:

Champions of Norrath: Realms Of EverQuest
Madden NFL 2005: Collector's Edition
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Sakura Taisen Atsuki Chishio Ni (Japanese)
The Guy Game
Wild Arms: Alter Code F (Japanese)
Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht

Yesterday I amde a copy of the DVD hoping that my Chip would then think it is a copied game instead of an Asian game and have less problems. But I didn't have to use it, I found that with the console on and the disk inside 3 quick pressures of the reset button load the game.
Hey Jacu, would you mind sending me that copy you´ve made, since you won´t use it anyway? :P

He's in St. George. I would go with the Crystal Chip.
There's one huge problem with the Crystal Chip and the Japan version of GT4. The problem is, "Crystal Chip will not allow you to play copied or import games. The reason is that in many countries, it is illegal to play copied and/or import game discs even if you own the original. scroll on down to see the whole paragraph disc.http://www.crystal-chips.com/index.php?page=faq
I almost bought one for my V12 slim pstwo since you can install one in it, that was until I read that crap about not being able to play import game's. Good thing I read the FAQ page!!!
Who would want to install a chip that doesnt allow them to play imports!!!! Let alone which country says its illegal to play an imported game on their console???? Never ever heard of that before.

It's not true, well not completely true ;). The "stock" crystal chip doesn't support it, but you can just upgrade the firmware to fully utilise the chip. Same goes for DMS4......

Exactly. By not allowing you to play copied or import games initially, it makes the chip legal. Just download and apply the firmware from online and wha la. :)

I know you were joking FatAss, but I wouldn't, it is such a supreme experience to play it that I want to support PD anyway possible.
And besides that it doesn't work, at least with my Chip.

And to clarify my situation yesterday I cleaned my lens (with a cleaning cd-rom) as suggested by Bighap and it loaded the game at first try (which never happened until yesterday :) ). Can't tell for sure that it solved my problem or it was just luck, but will keep the community posted

This is a newer chip so I havn't heard any reports of people having issues with dvd9, but its specs say it supports it, so you should be ok.

Just got my GT4 yesterday and did some testing...

I have a US PS2 (I believe it is 30000 series) with an "Apple V2" swapless mod chip. And my Japanese GT4 will NOT boot in it. I have MANY other Japanese PS2 games, including GT3, that boot fine in my chipped US system. So the "Apple V2" appears to just be a no-go for import DVD9 games.

Thankfully I also have an old unmolested original series SCHP-10000 Japanese system, and the game works fine on that. :)

Will all these things be in the normal Japanese version which I have ordered from play-asia.com (60€) http://ps2media.ign.com/ps2/image/article/576/576553/gran-turismo-4-movies-20050103094428058.jpg ??

yup, it looks just like that,
if your getting it from play-asia, ask them to put extra bubble wrap or use a stronger box, my GT4 (from play-asia) dvd case got cracked on upper right corner, which i was choked about, since i like to keep my stuff in good condition

Oh **** the game is already on the way to me

39001 and minichip(?). I got this from VDO Specialities about 2 years ago...

i never had any problems with this to play japanese or asian version game before.

man... feel so frustrating.

I think the main problem is that some mod chips do not support DVD9, From what I have been reading on other forums DMS3,DMS3 Plus ans DMS4 seem to play the original Japanese copy of the game no problems at all, the DMS mod chips work with all versions of ps2 aswell, so its a no brainer as to what brand of chip i will get to play my import copy of the game. :)

how much are those DMS chips? do you think it's possible to replace my old chip to newer one?

I don't see why not. they sell for about $65 in Australia but i would suggest getting a pro to install the chip, mines getting installed as we speak so ill keep you posted.

My Messiah 2 runs the game pretty much ok. Did have to reboot after 3 license tests because the game hung on a black screen.

My PS2 is a Gen 1 version though.

The 'Duo 2 Se' chip also suppose to do the job. I have just purchased one for $30AUD.

JA

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOo I got my Duo SE chip in the mail today and soldered it in about 5 hours ago it was really easy to install since alot of the wires were the same as my old crapy anti GT4 fake magic 3 chip so I only had to solder the wires off the old chip and onto the new one and remove some wires. All in all the Duo SE is an easy to install chip being only 17 wires. Well GT4 is just like the Nurb demo but better because I can now turn off the traction control for some proper driving action so I'm happy :D I played arcade mode with realistic tires for awhile and I was doing some massive motorsportland II power slides in the Turbo Falcon and I had a lap of the ring in the Falcon too, tried some slides in the Monaro but she drives like a big fat boat and needs some harder suspension (I swear my VN handles better and it doesn't even have FE2) :P I'm doing some b spec races now to save up for a new GTO since it's cheaper than the Monaro and because I'm tired of the RX7 I bought to start the game with, apart from a few frame rate issues especally in B spec mode and in Replays that are not up the the usual Gran Turismo standards and the Garage cars missing from 2 players mode and the no full screen replay in two player mode, well apart from those things the game would score 10/10. It's gone quite a few steps ahead of Concept. Well hang on I have to start another b spec race :P. Ok: ) very handy that b spec, could save weeks from your life

I forgot to mention when the game first booted up after all these delays and problems and I saw the intro movie and that GT40 i couldn't help but shed a tear, it was a very emotional moment : ~)~
