I moderate a forum that deals with mod chips, and I can tell you that more people will run into issues with games that are dvd9 due to their ps2 laser and not their chip, so some unmodded ps2s will have issues as well. If your ps2 is modded and won't play dvd9, which gt4 is, try disabling your chip. This is usually done by pressing and holding the reset button to turn on your ps2 and then letting go when the Sony screen comes up. Some newer chips use the eject button instead, so you can try that too. Most problems will be run into with people with older chips such as the Magic 2 and 3. Swap magic discs are just plain garbage and will definately cause problems, as many of you are experiencing.

If your laser is the issue there are a few thing you can try. If your laser is dirty you can try a cleaning disc like this. You can also clean it by hand. Your laser might not be strong enough either. You can see how to clean by hand and how to adjust your laser here.

Can you get the new slim-line PS2 chipped? I have Gran Turismo 4 but it barely runs on my old old old PS2 (the first model which came with an excuse for a laser) and it has real difficulties reading DVD game imports. Which is why i am going to get a silver PS2 chipped this weekend, but was wondering if you can get the solimeline one chipped as i would just get that done instead if you could.

Yes you can. The Slim PS2 is known as the V12 in the mod chip world. You can get either a Matrix Infinity or the Crystal Chip. I know a guy in the UK if you need an installer.

Cool. The place i was gonna buy a Silver PS2 chipped from said they can't chip it, but i'l maybe try and go to this market called The Barras, where they chip PS2s. If they can chip a slim-lline PS2, i'll get that instead, so i can play my GT4 at long last!

Like I said in my first post, swap magic is garbage. Plus using the slide card will eventually damage your tray.

My old PS2 used the neo2.2 where you had to insert an AR2 disk, then an original DVD game, then the game you wanted to play so i don't really want a swapping one i suppose. I was just content with the idea of not having to go through the hassle of opening your PS2 up and losing you guarantee, when you use a swap card. I didn't know it damaged your tray, looked bulletproof.

The ps2 warranty is only 90 days anyways. Most good installers warrant their install. The flip top, slide card, and old school neo chip/sbox require swapping. All current chips require no swapping.

So, lets say I have the new slim PS2, which chip would you reccommend? And it might be difficult finding an installer though ( i think i know where i might be able to get one frrom) but whereabouts does that guy live in the UK, cos im in Scotland.

Ok, thanks. I saw this on modchip.com

http://modchip.com/ps2/slidecard.htm

you don't have to get your PS2 chipped to play backups/imports. Can you tell me anything about it, how reliable it is (etc).

That's no good for GT4, it can only play the same stuff as a flip lid and the swap magic disks, I guess one day soon someone will figure out how to put GT4 onto a regular dvd but untill then it's modchip upgrade time. Down with local dvd regions that's what I say

Ok. It's so annoying. I have my copy of Gran Turismo 4 in my hands right now and i can't play it cos my ****ty old ps2 model with my ****ty old chip can't handle the dvd disk. The sooner I get my slim-line PS2 up and running, the better! Pity that place im gonna try and get one chipped at is only open on SATURDAYS/SUNDAYS so 4 more days i'll have to wait :(

That's not true. GT4 is in fact the first time I can't play a game using the swap magic disc, and as I'm using the flip top (you have some really awesome fliptop mods at www.ps2fliptop.net, for instance the blue transparent casing with fliptop built in) instead of the slide card I have no additional wear. As a bonus, I can clean the platformrails and lens of the PS2 more easily now (although I've never needed it). I've been using it for over a year and it works great.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work right now with GT4, which is why I'm considering a chip - it is a bit painful to have an original copy of GT4 lying around and not be able to play it. If anyone can recommend a place to have it done in the Netherlands, send me a PM.

Hi People nice to be a part of this community, this is my first post.
I just wanted to Share my experience: O have a Mod Chip installed that is around 2 years old, and it requires a reset to see PS2 copied games and a long reset (until the Sony name appears) for PS1 Games and DVD.
I bought the Chinese version of GT4 and I am in Italy. I had many problems to load this game, it was working like once very 30 restes or turn offs or switches off.
Yesterday I amde a copy of the DVD hoping that my Chip would then think it is a copied game instead of an Asian game and have less problems. But I didn't have to use it, I found that with the console on and the disk inside 3 quick pressures of the reset button load the game.
It might be a coincidence, or it my be just for my PS2 but it worked 3 times out of 3.
BTW a sentence of a tribunal in Italy ruled that Sony has to recognize warranty even on chipped units, as long as the failure can't be directly linked to the chip installation (i.e. if the tray brakes they have to recognize warranty even if the unit was chipped) and in EU Bighap warranty is 24 months :)

Gtaddict you probably want to change your signature before F1 season starts, sorry but I don't think there is nothing much to expect for anyone again this year: FERRARI RULEZ :P

Mine is a 50001 v10, modded with Messiah

Im just waiting for GT4 to arrive. If it works ok. If not, i´ll switch my PS2.

BTW, it reads movie DVD9s, why it shouldn´t read game DVD9s?

Am i missing something?
