PS3 chip unveiled

It will probably be affordable as well £250-£350. 4Ghz!!!
The graphics chip itself might be based on the next generation Nvidia chip which wont be in PC's for a few years yet. Or it might be based on the current generation...

I'm just thinking about what GT5 will look like on the PS3...

Well, theoretically it could be 100x better, depending on how much "cell" you can throw at it. First off the CPU will be more than 10x faster, and they've offloaded the graphics to a dedicated graphics chip. So the visuals will be better AND all the CPU jobs will be quicker and more advanced as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see game performance with visual quality of GT4s Photomode and 8 to 12 cars on the track, if not more. They'll probably add more environmental things as well, like weather and track inconsistancies like "marbles" and seams in the asphalt.

And for those of you who are so interested in the multi-head display, the PS3s would link together not only to give you that multi-head display, but they would also share processing power to make the game better (:

Sure but on a crappy TV it won't make a big difference. The resolution of a TV won't change so unless Sony includes a direct VGA output it's useless and will be just another marketing hype.

HDTV? 1080i should be pretty prevelant by then, and 16:9 at 1080i is freaking huge resolution.

Maybe they´ll release a bundle pack, PS3 + Toshiba´s HDTV!

Why not a SONY HD TV? ...

4Ghz , i pc doest even have that. ps3 will kill all

Moore's law states that CPU speeds double every 18 months (1.5 years). The PS3 will not be sold for at least two years, if not longer. The CPU speed of an Intel Pentium 4 is currently 3.8 Ghz, so in three years it will be 15.2 Ghz. However, the architecture of the P4 is vastly different from the IBM/Sony Cell. It needs to be measured in flops of some sort.

They're putting Cell chips in Toshiba TVs? Why would they do that? But I guess if they are, then hell yes that would be a good thing. And I'd get a Cell desktop, Cell laptop, Cell toaster, Cell fridge, Cell cell ..., Cell dog, Cell vacuum ...

I desagree, Moore's law states that "the number of transistors that can be fit onto a square inch of silicon doubles every 12 months." Of course a consequence of that is an increase in speed, so you are not 100% wrong ;) But the main goal was to obtain a cost reduction.

Don't forget a Cell spouse, a Cell car, oooooh, and a few Cell turds :dopey:

4Ghz  , i pc doest even have that. ps3 will kill all :scared:
But the PS3 wont be out for a few years yet. Computers will take over again...

They're putting Cell chips in Toshiba TVs? Why would they do that?

BBC News
Sony, IBM and Toshiba, who have been working on the Cell processor for three years, unveiled the chip on Monday.

BBC News
The PlayStation 3 is expected in 2006, while Toshiba plans to incorporate it into high-end televisions next year.

IBM has said it will sell a workstation with the chip starting later this year.

BBC News
While the PlayStation 3 is likely to be the first mass-market product to use Cell, the chip's designers have said the flexible architecture means that it would be useful for a wide range of applications, from servers to mobile phones.

Taken from the article linked on the first post. ;)

 Dayam ps3 comes out 2006?!

Ermmm, where are you getting that from? I've not seen any official "Sony" releases on that but I would expect it in 2007 - roughly two and a half years from now.

Hardly... current theory holds the PS3 will launch in Japan in Spring '06, NA in Fall '06. The main processor is now finished.. why would take them a further two years to design the console around it?

Finished? The specs may be finished - now they have to figure out how to produce them cheap enough to put into a game console. Most new processors cost around $400 - an entire console has to cost less than that.

I doubt the production cost will be high. The Cell chip is rather small so producing it won't be a problem.
On the subject of PS3 beign outdated by 2006,i'd like to add this.

Name one racing game on PC that looks better than GT4.There isn't one,and to think that GT4 is running on a 300 Mhz console.Imagine what 4.6 Ghz will produce. The PC will need atleast 10 times as much in order to get the same results. That is the result of optimized code wich the PC will never have because there are infinite amounts of different hardware on wich a PC game has to run so optimization is not possible.

Rest assured it will be out in 06. Trust me.

Finished? The specs may be finished....

Look again.. the CHIP is finished.. they're producing them right now.

The "new chip" cost you mention is largely due to supply and demand.. everybody wants the lastest and greatest chip, and they'll pay out the nose for it. After one month of production, when the price drops like a rock, do you think the chip itself is really any cheaper to manufacture? No, it's just a shift in supply and demand.

Cost doesn't factor that heavily into console production, you should know that.. even today, Sony sells the PS2 at a loss.. all consoles are sold at a loss, especially at the beginning, the PS3 will be no different. It'll cost however much it needs to cost. And there's still a whole YEAR before PS3's start hitting the shelves.. plenty of time to tweak production.

Actually, let me change gears here.. I shouldn't be having to defend common sense and industry reports...

Why is it that YOU think the console will come out two years after it's competition? It makes absolutely no sense.
